Re: Shipping an 8510C

Years ago we used to receive heavy items like this new from HP with each major assembly packed in its own double-wall box with custom closed-cell foam inserts.  They always arrived safely.

As for racks, the same applied with custom boxes used by the manufacturer.  When I ship I always build a wood crate using thick closed cell foam in cut shapes to surround it.  Have shipped units overseas with no problem at all.  Before putting in the container it is advisable to wrap the rack with stretch wrap.  If you are nervous about it, you can also wrap it with bubble wrap before adding the stretch wrap.  With all of this if something comes loose, it will be held captive.

In regards to shipping racks, one instance was where I “borrowed” a complete spectrum surveillance system from the HP sales office and they shipped everything already assembled in the rack.  It arrived in excellent condition,  I then took it “on the road” for a couple of trips between the east and west coasts via air freight with the same results before sending it back to HP.

For packing heavy items I use a product called "Polyplank" (no affiliation) which is a large sheet of closed-cell poly foam in whatever thickness you want.  Stuff like this is normally available through local or national shipping material suppliers.  You then sharpen up a large butcher knife and go to work making your foam shapes.  You can glue pieces together using a hot glue gun on a very cool setting (don't let the glue get too hot or it will melt the foam rather than glue it together).  The same goes for gluing the foam into the crate or box.

As for shipping, the major carriers (UPS, Fed-X, etc.) will entertain large items over 90 lbs with an additional surcharge.  I have received items weighting several hundred pounds through them including loaded racks of equipment.
