Looking for DCC installer
Mick Moignard
I’ve done at least 3 of those PSC C-16s, one of which I made from the kit version. They all have TSU-1100 in the tender with a keepalive, speaker in the smokebox and appropriate lights. None have working markers, just head, and backup where there is one. The tender may need some minor work to slit out a bit of the coal space to get the decoder in, but in general it wasn’t a particularly difficult install. Tiny plugs and sockets between loco and tender.

You have to remove shell from tender floor. And the N18 was designed for plug into N scale locos. It was after I mentioned my install requirements such as HOn30 train and trooper SR&RL or the Berlyn HOn3 Mason boogie that Soundtraxx recognized there were a few installers that don't follow the conventional approach. I mentioned the Laise DCC socket that I use. Smaller then theirs and more versatile as you can solder wires on in different directions depending on orientation. They came out with what you see. And as mentioned almost same eventual size as TSU1100. It's late here in Colorado. More tomorrow if needed. 🚂 Fz Maybe I'll take the tender body off the chassis and see. I took a look at that N18 decoder and when you add the wire harness to it, it seems bigger than the TSU-1100 |

If memory serves me correctly, and I may be mixing my installs, the water jacket is even with bottom of floor. The decoder, keep alive and speaker do not all fit inside shell so some wires will be between floor and water jacket, needing milling for relief. If speaker is in coal bunker then no drilling holes in floor. If you are a perfectionist or careful modeler this is a doable install. If not, have fun. 🚂 Fz Hey Fuzzy, |

Hey Fuzzy,
I never knew there was a N18 decoder. On these Precision Scale C-16s did you have to make any mods to the tender body? |

Precision C16s are terrible, having done a dozen or more as very little room and so much detail to avoid. The other builders are a little over sized tender shells. Also the water jacket in some tenders, renders, the decoder benders 🤣 very small spaces. However the newer N18 Tsunami coupled with TCS Ka2 capacitor and 9 × 16mm speaker are a good mix. I'm here to help and answer questions 🚂 Fuzzy for Scale Brass Mechanic Thanks for the replies. I am not new to DCC installs I have done sound installs in the past. In my k-37 I installed decoder + speaker in tender and in the locomotive I did marker lights, headlight and fire box flicker. This being a C-16 (much smaller loco) I'm not sure I wanna deal with it but also not sure If the cost would be worth it either. |

I do my own. DCC and sound requires fool-proof pickups, which will usually mean a set of wipers on the insulated wheels of a brass model. Space in the boiler is limited even after some weight removal, so decoder or speaker. Easier to put both in the tender along with a stay alive capacitor. Which means an insulated coupler. Which usually means isolating the motor from the body. If it's an old model the motor probably has a high initial current draw, so to be safe a new motor......

If you're new to this get it done professionally. There are still a few rogue installers out there, still trading and screwing up, either by poor installation work or communicatios or just generally screwing up the jon totally. So why not a register of proven installers with the best track records. I do my own installation work unless it's a particular model or something I cannot be bothered. (I'm just doing a Blunami install on a PSC HOn3 K37 - iPhone 5 speaker, Lais stay alive). BUT I do not them for others and anyway I'm in the UK. So those who have used third party installers please give us your thoughts so people like the anonymous 'rio grande' aka '2shy' can be confident that they're going to get a pukka job.
On the basis of 'if you cannot say anything nice then do not say anything at all' please share. Mark K BTW Mick Moignard in the UK. How about Gerry Hopkins in Oz. Done more installs than I've had hot dinners!!!! |

It’s a beautiful model and shouldn’t need a new motor. If you’re able to chat over the phone I can give you more details on how I do my installs and what steps we take to get the work done. My phone number is listed on the site, give me a call at any point today. The c-16 that I am looking to have dcc installed is a Precision Scale Iron Horse Models. I believe it was from the 2004 run so I don't think it needs to be re geared/motored. |

Hello, I’ve done my fair share of installs. Have a browse and let me know what you think here or give me a call! Thanks! All the C-16’s were WSM locomotives, not the high end versions.
|

I have 5, C-16’s that I re- motored and upgraded to DCC with sound and lights. Also done many other brass locomotives and plastic diesels. The C-16’s are my own. Do your locomotives need motors?

Litchfield Station in Arizona. It has a great Web site, and it appears to make this project as easy as π. I haven't used it yet for this activity, but for all other DCC projects where I have needed help, it was quickly forthcoming, AND the Web site clearly delineates the costs for DCC installation of all sorts. Try Fuzzy at the Scale Brass Mechanic ... he advertises in the Gazette. Highly recommended.
