Re: NJ Custom Brass C21 Remotor?

Brian Kopp

My pleasure Craig. Nice to meet you.
I was talking with Dave Hoffman on the phone a month ago or so and he too is moving to these ultra-cheap DC motors. He reminded me of a website I know about, being an electrical engineer, that sells surplus electronics including motors: Allelectronics out in Los Angeles (allelectronics.com). Just before posting this I went to their website and they have about 45 different DC and geared DC motors, many for a $1 or $2. They even had a stock of used faulhaber 1624s with a 22:1 gearhead attached for under $8 each. I almost fell off the chair. I have some Minebea's on order from ebay for late June delivery but I ordered a used faulhaber from allelectronics just to see what it would do......

Raggs' - nice Placerville warehouse, other stuff available.

Raggs' is producing more kits - check out this Placerville warehouse.

And he's got a great small depot in HO and S, from Crested Butte -

And a bunch of mine stuff in S.  But most interesting to me are future plans for the J.J. Harris warehouse in Dolores (hopefully he'll do tthat in HO).

The Durango Depot is back in production too, but only in S.

And his huge HO Rose-Walsh Smelter is still available -

Looking for a Switcher

Stephen Silver

I am building out a new HOn3 layout and looking for a small switcher; 0-4-0, Plymouth type diesel.
Does anyone have experience with the Gandt small diesel kit.  I am DCC so looking for something
that will take a decoder.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Looking for a Switcher

Bachmann maker a very nice running N Scale 0-4-0 Plymouth, which could be regauged to HOn3.  There are several HO small bodies on Shapeways that fit the mechanism.  The bodies were designed to convert the N Scale loco to HOn30.

Plenty of axle to spread the wheels from 9mm to 12mm.  As the bodies were designed for HOn30, the conversion should be straight forward to make it HOn3.

I have a Grandt box cab without DCC. Adding weight is the key. An N scale decoder should fit easily. A small current keeper would probably a good idea.

If you go to Shapeways and search for Hzhone Diesel, you get a 25 ton GE Diesel conversion which uses a Kato drive. The other conversion uses the Bachmann mechanism.

These locos are frequently available on eBay. I have a couple more that are re-lettered C&S ( protolance).  Regauging is done by Steve Swofford, at a very reasonable price.  This particular loco, works well in the re-gauging process since it has a Stewart- Kato drive.  Do not know the process in detail and have not done it myself. Re: Looking for a Switcher

Grandtline made 2 of these. One was a 23T boxcab, The other was a 25T end cab. Both suffered from weak frames. Media articles from the time period suggested making side frame reinforcements from brass. You will occasionally see these on eBay.

Westside Models made a brass model of the D&RGW #50 diesel. These are on eBay for @ $150.

On a side note, Ken Kidder had some 0-4-0T steamers. Don't Knock them. They come with a large 5-pole KTM motor. I put DCC in one. I also re-motored two with can motors. An easy job. Get a can motor with a 2.4mm shaft. Once you pull the KTM motor you can narrow the cab floor to suit. I use silicone adhesive to secure the motor. On eBay thse run from $50-150. There is also an 0-4-4-0.

I believe Steve Swofford sells on eBay under the seller name of jeepcaptain. He has done several locos using different chassis. FYI most will negotiate a 12" radius, just ask.

There is another eBay seller, crazy4nsmodels78 who narrows an Athearn CF7 chassis to HOn3.

It ain't prototype! There is a history of narrow gauge two truck diesels in the US. The best known are the White Pass and Yukon diesels. Both the 1954 GE's and the Later Montreal's were all 6 axle diesels.

Re: Looking for a Switcher

Mike,

What would you like to know?  As stated I am not adept at modifying the gauge of locos.  I would suggest that you contact Steve who has done  all of mine. He is also on Ebay "Jeepcaptain" where he sells older style HO switchers that he has  re-gauged.

The Atlas HH660, is a very nice loco and is probably the smallest HO Switcher available for somewhat simple conversion given the mechanics of the Kato style power trucks. Runs well HoN3 code 70 and 55.  Clearances can be a problem as the profile of this loco is a little larger.

Steve's work is excellent and turns things around quickly.  Surprisingly inexpensive when he did serveral conversions for me a few years ago.
