Re: NG Passenger Car Brake rigging

Randy Hees

Here is the brake rigging drawing used in the C&TS Historic car restoration report.   The D&RG had a somewhat unique foundation brake brake lever/rod system.  There were three discrete systems, each with two levers, all interconnected by chains.  One for the hand brakes, one for the air brakes and one connected to the trucks.

The continual quest for metal siding...

Scott Baker

I attached a photo from a recent experiment. The material is heavy aluminum foil. I made the scribing tool from the head piece of a $20 Wahl brand electric hair trimmer that quit working. On the trimmer head, the outside "tines" are wider so I removed them with a Dremel. I also salvaged the motor which measures 15x20x32 (not sure how well it would work if i use it for re-motoring brass).
Observations:
1. The ribs would impress deeper if I backed the aluminum up with something soft or a bed of caulk that some have done rather than scribing on glass.
2. The ribs "look" right, but are exactly 3" on center in ho, it may be a better application for S scale, but again, no one is walking around the layout with a scale rule and it looks about right, though I didn't compare it to any of the other ho siding I have from various manufacturers.

Just an experiment with zero dollars spent and some random thoughts...
Scott

Check the photo in the Colorado RR Museum Annual on the F&CC.  The first passenger car into Victor crashed and spanned a gully on its side. And this wa a recorded with a photo that’s a full-on shot of the underside.

HO craftsman kits for sale

Darryl Huffman

My friend, David Capron, is selling a bunch of craftsman kits

If interested, please contact David directly at:

April 19, 2021

My health and Father Time Has made me accept the simple fact that I will not be able to enjoy building craftsman kits as long as I had planned to. These kits are all NIB from a non-smokers home. Most all of these kits are out of production, many Limited editions and so rare on the open market that they are not even listed on eBay. They will be sold on a first come basis. Message me for your private showing of these exquisite Craftsman Kits in Greenville. If you want them shipped I will need your ZIP code to calculate that cost.
I’m missing some Bar Mill and JLN kits so I’ll send an updated list ASAP. I’ll also be happy to look at any reasonable multi kit offers. Remember these are rare even on eBay. I will be happy to send you pics of any kits you want to see. Happy modeling.

Re: flexable tubing (again)

Nigel Phillips

Silicone fuel line tubing for RC use (model planes) is what I use for connecting motor shafts to drive towers. Uxcell  (Amazon) has 1, 1.5, 2, 2.4 and 3mm ID tubing for immediate delivery. Last one I did was a Tenshodo coffee grinder that was a nonrunner due to the tubes rotting away. 1.5mm ID tubing and a replacement motor with a 2mm shaft. I used to get it from a hobby shop that focused on model planes (BC). Helps if the shafts are lightly knurled.

Hi Eric, Wiseman would be my first choice, contact him direct...

For Automobiles, BTS (Bill Wade) has Peirce Arrow diffs.  Just was in contact with him yesterday about them.  They are the old Master Creations line, everything but the etchings.

Wheelworks (Micro-Engineering) is another current manufacturer, and they will sell you stuff separate from a kit as well; I have done that too.

Otherwise you will be busting up kits to get your diff…
