Alberta Navigation and Coal/Great Falls and Canada Railway

Came across this 200-mile long 3 foot gauge railway in Montana/Alberta that ran from 1890 to around 1903 before becoming standard gauge (with a lot of dual gauge track during the transition). Quite a few more narrow gauge miles around Lethbridge, AB. The standard gauge was operated by the Great Northern and the Canadian Pacific after a lot of political maneuvering and financial skullduggery. Lots of interesting modeling interests, including a transborder depot that bisected the international boundary.

The starting locomotives were Baldwins, the first 3 erected in 1890 (and in the Baldwin records). 4-4-0's, then on to 2-6-0 and 2-8-0 locomotives. Quite a few photographs of the locomotives are around but most lack suitable datum points to guesstimate dimensions. I'm interested in the Moguls but have run into the usual problem of this gauge and scale, the scarcity of models. Can anybody point me to some plans/blueprints/diagrams with dimensions? Specifically the Moguls. Trawling through the available information online I have some possible wheel diameters (dependent on the cylinder dimensions), but a diagram with the major dimensions is what I am really looking for. Rather than going down the regauging route, which I'm very familiar with as I model EM gauge (16.5 to 18.2mm), I think it's more feasible to have some frames cut and etched and proceed from there with the bodywork. Wheels and cut-down axles from Alan Gibson Works in the UK, along with a narrow gearbox and motor suitable for DCC operation. Built a few of these in OO/4mm scale, so nothing new there.

I looked briefly at regauging an N-scale chassis and using 3D printed add-ons for the boiler, cab, and tender but I'm not convinced that an N-scale body is a good match for the body, and the same applies to the wheels.

You are looking at the remains of 498. The rivet line appears to be a large diamond-shaped patch applied to the inside of the boiler barrel around the bottom of the rear course.

Thanks for the sand house photographs.

Looking out the door of the 1981 photo, I see the #3 & #4 drivers of what is presumably a K-36 or K-37, with the boiler stripped down to the bare shell. On the barrel's belly there is an extremely odd pair of diagonal rivet lines, not at all like the usual form of longitudinal boiler shell seam. Does anyone actually know what these represent?

Hi Bob,

I did reach out to Simon through his contact form on his website but have yet to hear back from him. The lack of detail could be solved with 3D printing but that would add another source into the game which would drive up the cost of the kit. It would either need to be mostly wood construction OR 3D printed construction or, the 3rd option; a conversion kit for a Walthers turntable; like Firbeox models did. Either way it's going to take time, research, and input from customers/modelers. The biggest hurdle will be the drive components if not a conversion kit. of course if you want an exact prototypical model it will need to be 3D printed. Any suggestion, off-list of course, are welcome!

I am interested. Kitwood Hill no longer offers their Durango turntable. I recall he was referring folks to the Diamond Scale 65' turntable but don't see that on his website any longer. The Kitwood Hill turntable apparently operated well but the pictures I saw lacked girder detail. The ring rail and end bogies/drive mechanism were bulky. I hope these can be improved, perhaps with 3D printed details. Don't know if Kitwood Hill or Diamond Scale would be willing to provide the mechanism.

John, I had to go back to my FaceBook page to find my review of the boxcar kit. Here is the jest of my opinion of the kit:

I did not use the kit's lasered brake ratchet/pawl, the brake staff lower bracket, or the lasered brake wheel. Instead, I used the Grandt parts included. Also, I added a length of 1/32" brass angle to each door for the door braces in the middle of the doors.

So, to sum it up, this kit took some extra research and parts. The parts of the kit are great, but be prepared to add parts that IMHO, should've been included in the kit: NBWs, 0.020" wire for the train line, the angle for the door brace, and .015" wire for a longer brake staff if you use the Grandt lower bracket.

Having looked closely at the flat car kit instructions, I think they have improved. Enjoy!

I have been unable to find any photos that show that view. It seems like I saw a discussion somewhere with photos of the inside of the drying house with the equipment etc., and the process used, (it may have been Chama), but I can't seem to find the source again. Any help is appreciated!

Everything Mark said is correct.

One other issue can come up from the use of an external DVD drive on Macs from the last few years that have no media drive. While I had no problem getting one of my Apple SuperDrives to read the Hayden DVD, another SuperDrive I use from time to time (and normally reads any CD/DVD) took several attempts to get the drive to mount.

No emulator like Wine for MacOS but you can run Parallels or VMWare Fusion on a Mac (Intel based) and have a full blown Windows Virtual Machine...Parallels and Fusion are very stable and well integrated into MacOS. I use this extensively at work and for hobby purposes...not free but well worth the few $$$. Parallels will run on an M1 Mac and one can install Windows 10 for ARM Preview but the DVD will not run on it as the program on the DVD is compiled for Intel based Windows...

I know nothing about Macs as I am a Linux guy, myself.  Is there a tool equivalent to Wine for Linux you can use on a Mac to emulate Windoze and run some of these apps?  I use it to get access to the MR archive on DVD and it works great.  I haven't acquired the NGSLG DVD yet, but expect it will work as well.

Well, I recently saw the Netflix Minimalism documentary and realized I need to pare-down my stuff. That, and the Marie Kondo "Tidy-up” movement, motivated me to jettison my back issues, Next up is to scan my post-2014 issues and add them to my collection of NG&SLG PDFs.

Mount Blue Model Co is generally known for their O scale narrow gauge models, but I was looking over their site recently and chanced on an extensive line of HO narrow gauge cars. These are not the usual Colorado prototypes. Mostly 2' gauge, but I purchased an ET&WNC box and pair of flats, and a generic 28' box that should be an easy conversion to an early White Pass. These are laser kits, including laser cut underframes, so should be easy builds, but will need trucks and couplers.

Yes, I bought Bob’s DVD but, unfortunately, I could not get the app to install properly on any of my Macs. Gratefully I was able to extract all the scanned PDFs and can read and search the resulting files easily. Folks with the new M1 Macs (no Boot Camp ability at this point) and post Catalina macOS machines are going to need to have a Windows machine to use the DVD. Bob told me he has the app installed and working on his Mac running the Mojave macOS, but I could not get the app to install properly on ANY post-High Sierra machine, even though I know my way around Macs and macOS being self-described cyberShaman (Mac support technician).

That said, there are some old-school MRs out there that prefer reading off paper, and with the prices NG&SLG back issues are going for on eBay, I thought the $350 for 60 issues in very good shape sounded reasonable. Still, without a doubt getting 50 years of NG&SLG and Finelines AND Slim Gauge News in digital format for $150 is a much better deal.

But sadly, Bob’s compilation only goes up to 2014, and he’s told me directly that he and Bob Brown are not interested in keeping it up-to-date or compatible with current Macs.
