That's neat Mule. I reminds me of my first real modeling experiences building 1/72 Airfix plane kits. I favored WW1 designs because there was so much variety and the kits were cheap - two shillings (14c) and they came in a polythene bag. I used to buy a 12 page booklet called Profile publications, which descibed the aircraft and its history, included historical photos and on the inside back cover showed some of the color schemes the planes carried. I'm looking at the Fokker Dr.1 edition right now.  I still buy aircraft and military modeling magazines because there are so many ideas in them.
In the UK we didn't have the tradition of craftman building kits and although lazer cut designs are now much more common so are resin and 3-D printed.
My first ever US wood kit was Bill Banta's Gato depot and I have pretty much stuck with Bill and Joe Fuss's offerings. They are fun though Joe's Ridgway depot took an age, it was all those shingles.

I find building structures one of the more enjoyable parts of the hobby.  At least half the structures on my railroad are scratch built, most of the rest are kit bashed or superdetailed kits.  I don't like to put buildings on the layout without at least painting and detailing them. Here, for instance, is the old engine house at Robertsdale, at the southern end of the EBT.  It's all scratchbuilt from wood.  The other structure is the Orbisonia depot on the EBT, all built in styrene.  They are among my favorite structures.

Structure building is adictive, I built so many that I only use about half of them on my RR.  One thing I always do is write the date I built it and put my name on the bottom.  Its to look back and see the improvements of my structuers over the years.  I think my oldest is a burned down pump house I made in high school back in 1964.

Hi Russ,

Not a problem. I recognized it from before or else I wouldn't have said anything. Thanks for posting it in case others have not seen it!

Whoops,

Looking fantastic.   Now, scratch or laser kits and exactly how long is "couple of days?"   Take me a month + to scratch that nice collection.

I'm very saddened by the news the James has passed ,I have known him over 25 years! I have a lot of his books signed by him we used to get together and talk about Narrow Gauge railroads, he will truly be missed😥

Do you have the daughter’s contact info? Jim was going through her to find the stuff for me. She seems like a place to start, as she is likely a named heir.

I have nothing on her, just Jim’s phone number, which is probably not very helpful at this point.
