I picked up a little Benson Shay awhile back.  It's roughly the same size with an open frame motor that fills the tank.  I plan to replace it with a can motor.  It runs well on DC and with a Tsunami 2 there should be room in the cab for the decoder,  but a speaker and keep alive will be a challenge.

Be a good buy for around 100./150.

Curious item on ebay:
The listing says HOn3,
the photo of the box says HO,
and the photo of the wheel flange measurement suggests HOn30 (I think).

What is it really??

I drove by today and saw the brick and mortar store is permanently closed. Sounds like the business will live on in some capacity though.

Rob,

just got the underbody finished thanks to your very detailed pictures. I know the instruction says that the brake-part is to be bent - but nowhere it says by 90 degrees! And that was not so easy anyway considering the very flexible plastic they use for that part.

You made my day and I can now proceed to finish that nice car!!

Thanks again Rob, have a merry Xmas and a happy New Year, stay healthy and optimistic in 2021 with a new POTUS coming and several vaccines!!

Hi Roger,

Check out the current and past Narrow Gauge Gazettes for a bunch of “Brass bashing” articles that I’ve written.   They are step by step tutorials on rebuilding HOn3 brass.  I write about all the steps that I can think of, but you can pick and choose what things are important to you and skip the rest.   In the current issue (Nov\Dec 2020) I talk about picking a suitable subject and start a 2 article series on doing exactly what you are asking about.

In the past I’ve done a bunch of other brass bashing projects in the Gazette too.  Sure they aren’t the same models you are looking at but the concepts and advice are the same.  Earlier this year I wrote about obtaining parts, motors, etc.  Much of that has changed since Covid, but there is still good information there.  In the 2009 or 2010 HOn3 annual (still available from white river), I wrote an exhaustive series on painting brass.  I think there is the same mason bogie in that article that you have.  I did up 3-5 bogies at the time.   Around 1990, Jim Vail wrote a long series on the Gazette on reworking brass.  Most of his ideas stand today.  I’m thinking about writing a supplement for it on what has changed.

The remoter and repower group is great as someone else suggested.  There is a brass workshop group on Facebook with decent information.  Probably the best info is the page owners periodically go to Samhongsa and do a bulk buy on gearboxes, motors and details.  They are currently looking to source some good motors that would be suitable for HOn3.

If you want to save yourself some pain, try remotoring, etc a HO standard gauge brass engine first.  You’ll learn a lot about the process without the pain of working in HOn3.  I do a lot of standard gauge engines.  I thoroughly enjoy the process.  I slowed down significantly on  the HOn3 models because I find it much more tedious and frustrating.  My eyes aren’t what what they used to be too.

Good luck.  The information is out there if you look for it.  With practice, you’ll get good at reworking those engines.

Craig Symington.

Mark,

I too had great pleasure dealing with Joe (Ragg's to Richies) ! I am building his Telluride Depot and had minor trouble with a clapboard part.
I exchanged a couple of emails with Joe and received replacement parts within a week ! Talk about great customer service since it had to go across the Atlantic !

I understand Bill Banta‘s products and customer service is of the same kind !

Wayne,

If you've successfully built 'bundle of sticks' kits like Cambells you will easily adapt to lazer cut ones. The two that I find superb to deal will are Bill Banta and Joe Fuss (Raggs to Riches). Both produce lazer kits that fit together easily. The last Banta kit I made was the Sargents locomotive house with two extra bays. In fact the first ever kit I built when I returned to this hobby was Pagosa Junction and a little while ago I freshened it up and was able to obtain new windows and doors for it from Banta. But my greatest pleasure was finishing Joe Fuss's Ridgway depot, the full length version. In fact if you suffer rom Shinglitis (a fear of attaching shingles to walls and roofs) I might suggest passing on this one.

If you want weathered buildings, and excellent source of information is Jasen Jenson Trains on YouTube. His results are a little heavier than I would choose for my own railroad, but he does some excellent work and is very willing to share how he does it.
