Re: Painting HOn3 Labelle Wood Kits

Paint/prime the car with thinned shellac.. (alcohol based, thin with rubbing alcohol).  Treat as sanding sealer... sand or clean up with steel wool to seal everything...  Take care not to fill the scribed siding with paint.  You may want to consider using evergreen styrene in place of the scribed wood.  Then paint with your choice of paint...

Randy,

Pretty much all model paints today (save for Accu-Paint and Scale Coat) are some form of water based acrylic, enamel or urethane enamels. For all water or based acrylics or enamels, you should prime the wood parts with a solvent based spray on primer. Like Krylon Primer and Paint in white or primer gray. This is the primer method Banta Model Works and Raggs to Riches suggest. It works nicely from my experience. It seals the wood and prevents the wood from warping from the water based paints as they cure. Spray all wood parts to be painted prior to assembly and let dry at least 2 days before beginning construction. For final coatings I use mostly Vallejo Model Colours these days. The are from Spain and the Europeans still make the finest pigments around. Vallejo’s German Red Brown Primer is the best match for Tuscan Red that I’ve found ever.

Mission Models makes some very nice urethane enamels. They go on and cure with an excellent final surface. They are a bit fiddly to learn how to use but well worth the time spent in doing so. They are promising some rail road colors some day but, the existing line of military and automotive colors are broad.

Re: Rio Grande Models status?

Nothing on his Facebook page indicates an issue - he posted a photo on the 22d.  I'm not registered on Facebook; so I can't message, but maybe if someone else would...?  It's possible the website has been hijacked or there's a problem with the website service, has happened before.  I don't remember the specifics, but Trout Creek Engineering had to rebuild their website with a different url (.co instead of .com)

Went to print order form and saw 'CLOSED' in big letters on their home page. Called Coronado and Sheldon said he was at their Web Site yesterday and didn't recall seeing 'CLOSED'. Anyone know what's  happening? Hope all is well.

If "CLOSED" is not the case at Rio Grande Models, it being printed across the main page of their website,  is ominous...at best.

Eric might want to send out an explanation.

That is new. Don't know when the CLOSED was posted on his site as I have the information printed out as with the order form. Hope its not permanent.
Eric filled an order for me that I received 10 days ago.

Sad day. Figured at some point Eric would shut down.
Hope someone can pick up the line and continue his legacy.

Re: DRG Thielsen 4000 Series Box Car Trucks

Dusty

I'm going to try to get a couple pairs of Rio Grande 27' trucks ordered today. Even if they aren't convertable to Theilsens they will probably 'do' for stand in work car trucks.

Re: DRG Thielsen 4000 Series Box Car Trucks

Dale Buxton

I agree with Tony on the early C- class tender trucks. But these tender trucks are 4’ wheel base. Though, the extra 5” of truck length is hardly noticeable in HO scale while under a car. Unless maybe your truck bolster spacing from the end of the car frame would prohibit these trucks. One again a thin piece of styrene with about a half width hole in it to cover the springs and you’ve got a close facsimile D&RG 20 ton truck side frame.

So which one of you has added lights to the flangeways in the crossings on their narrow gauge layouts like the Tweetie has? =) Rode #12 with the family tonight for their last Christmas special event. What fun! Here is my cellphone video of #12 making her first entrance of the evening......
