I know Doug was playing in a charity hockey tournament for Children’s Hospital on Thursday and then going to Chicago to pick up the Rail Graphics screens and equipment, so he may not get back to you right away. But my impression in talking with him about the cars at O scale West was the tank cars were a go in both scales.

To be clear, this is not the official word, just what I took from our brief chat as the cars were mentioned in passing. I have several on reserve in O scale and he assured me that they had all the reservations and would use those to determine order Qty.

Re: Grandt C & S Trucks

John Stutz

The latter PSC HOn3 trucks have a similar problem with wheel sets falling out, particularly those with Acetyl (aka Delren) bolsters. A useful option is to glue one side frame to the bolster, using ACC on slightly roughened mating surfaces, and making sure that the two are square. This limits the relative misalignment of the side frames, and MAY prevent the wheel sets from falling out. So long as the bolster can rock slightly, for and aft, around the truck screw, the single side equalization will keep all four wheels on the track. Fixing one side frame square also helps keep the axles square to the track.

On August 11, 2019 at 7:18 PM "Lee Gustafson via Groups.Io" <bagustaf@...> wrote:

Interesting problem and solution. FWIW the Grandt line On3 Bettendorf trucks experience a similar issue. The side frames are loose on the truck bolster and as a result  the wheels sometimes fall out of the truck. The brake beams do not fit the trucks well. I wonder if the die was wearing out.

On Aug 11, 2019, at 7:09 PM, Dusty < dustburm@q.com> wrote:

My Grandt Bettendorf trucks more than occasionally have the wheel sets fall out. My initial solution was to replace the Grandt trucks with Micro Engineering trucks. This involved modifying the ride height of the car and painting and reweathering. This was good on unbuilt cars but not so good on finished and weathered cars. The problem with the Grandt Bettendorf trucks as I see it is either the axles are too short or the side frames are too wide/flexible. I needed an axel stretcher.

Today while trying to find a Grandt part in the parts trays I came across a package of Grandt wheels with long axels for passenger trucks I believe. Shortening them consistently and precisely looked like a major challenge for me. Armed with my digital caliper and calculator I concluded that .615 looked like a good length to work down from. I needed .050 of axel protruding from each wheel face to allow for finishing. Pictured is my axel cutting fixture. Crooked slots and all. I cut the axels flush against the fixture with a scalpel. A razor blade would also work I suspect. I test fit and checked rolling quality. I used 500 and 800 wet sand paper to polish axel ends. Remove just enough of the axel ends that they roll freely. I used a touch of Neolube (graphite and denatured alcohol) to finish the tune up. Paint and weather the wheel sets.

How hot was it in Bakersfield today?

asandrini

Well, according to the weather bureau, it was only 106 degrees.  Not sure how hot it was in my garage  but the following happened 10 minutes ago:

I was fixing dinner, when I heard a large pop, like popping a balloon. The pop was followed by a sharp metallic sound, then a rattling sound.

Fearing the worse, I checked the garage and didn't find anything. I backed my car out of the garage and found the lid to a pint paint can on the floor.  Checking the shelving above my cabinets. I found a can of Kills primer had gotten hot enough to blow the lid off. The pressure was so great that it caused the depressed portion of the lid to pop up instead of down.

Fortunately no paint got on my car.

Re: HOn3 grandt line C&S boxcar doors

Drew

No C&S boxcar doors, but I do have a few extra D&RGW 3000 series boxcar side doors. These are miss-shot door sprues from the Grandt 5001 boxcar hardware set, but the side doors are filled. Its the side roof walk and end door rails that are missing bits. Trim the door post and top rail off, and they may be a decent fit. If anyone notices and asks, you could claim that the door was destroyed somewhere on the D&RGW, and that they replaced it with one of their standard doors!

If you want to try one, reply to sender with a US Mail address.
