Eugene, OR, Southern Pacific Depot
Don Bergman
Folks,
I am currently scratch building the SP and SP&S Eugene Oregon Depots for Bruce Chubb's layout covering Northern California to Seattle. Although Bruce has handed me be a thick folder on both I am currently stumped on some details on the windows for the
SP Depot. The photographs are usually from a distance and at an angle. Can anyone on get me in contact with rail fan in Eugene who can take a look with a tape measure at the SP Depot for me. Specifically the set back of the window from the exterior brick
surface and the size of the concrete window sill including the extension past ( to the right and left) the window and how far it extends out away from the brick
Thanks for any help you can give.

Re: Letting the smoke out B.S. # 456

I had one of the first run #455 post wreck and #461 both had the issue until I sent them to Blackstone for a remotor. Still waiting for the new engines and re-run of any rolling stock GOOD LUCK for any of that. Jim

That’s great Don. It was weird on mine, no matter what I did it would always start jerking again and giving the error codes. Put it back on DC to burn off, it’d work for a while and repeat again. I have 2 early Blackstone K-27's. One needed to be re-motored one has not. Let it run 20 minutes on DC and see if that helps. It took a while for it stopped needing to be run on DC to burn it off but it did.. I always slip insulation
(striped from wire) on the pins next to the two outside that are the motor to prevent an accident with DC hitting the wrong pin.

Thanks for the input, John and Jeff. I figured the 16' width would work since I'll be running K's and narrow gauge Bachmann 80 ton Shays.

The minimum clear width for SG through bridges was 16' for straight track, increasing for curved alignments, per the 1920 AREA specifications for steel bridges. And "The minimum width center to center of girders or trusses shall be not less than one-fifteenth of the effective span, and not less than is necessary to prevent overturning under the assumed lateral loading." If you will be running outside framed 3' gauge engines, the width over cylinders is roughly the same as similar size SG engines, and the 16' clear minimum would be reasonable. The White Pass actually did specify 16' clear width for through bridges, tunnels and snowsheds. I believe the D&RGW only required 14', but their clearance standards are available online somewhere. With only inside frames engines, 12' gives reasonable clearance for men on the bridge, but at this point you are getting iffy on resisting overturning by cross winds. This Campbell kit is a remarkably accurate one, especially considering that it has been in production for about 50 years. Whoever designed it had actually studied at least one Howe truss, either in the field or as an actual engineering drawing. He did a better job of getting the details right than most of those who followed, and I think only Hunter Line has matched his result in this respect. You won't be off if you build it as designed. After all, many nominally narrow gauge bridges were actually second hand standard gauge bridges, with SG clearances, most of the surviving D&RGW NG through trusses being examples. John Stutz

I have 2 female mini connectors with a wire attached that I plug on each outside pin. Then connect my power to the wires. I even take the plate off the bottom & shim up the drivers with toothpicks so it is just the motor & internal gears running. I will try running it longer & give it another go. Larry G

I’ve had three engines with that issue...and the only way o got rid of it was to replace the motor. I got the replacement motor mechanism from Blackstone when I did this. You might get a hold of customer support to see if they still have any of the replacement parts. Craig

Letting the smoke out B.S. # 456
Margie & Larry Galkowski
I have any early run BS 456 that has the over oiling issue. I have let the smoke out on several occasions.
My questions are, How often does this need to be done? & how long to run it to de-smoke it? I do not run a lot & try to run different engines to rotate there use. So is this going to be a recurring issue I have to deal with? Seems like after setting a period of time I have to let the smoke out again be fore using. Thanks in advance Larry G
