Upgrading the old HO Gilbert NYC Hudson - The start

SP4149

My project for this month is working on upgrading an old loco from my youth.  My father built our first layout on a 5x9 sheet of plywood (ping pong table sheet)
and it had two levels.  Initially we used two old HO Varney 0-4-0s he acquired used, and ran  the snot out of them.  The Hudson was a Christmas present and represented the first
"big power" on the HO pike.  We had just torn down our American Flyer layout and I must have missed the smoke and chuff of the Flyer locos.  The Hudson had both those features
and a 7-15volt DC motor.  Somewhere along the line it got a new motor and a Daylight paint job.  Then I found another one on eBay, it looked to be in good shape with the original motor.

Last month I found a source for some compact yet powerful six pole motors to replace the OEM motor which was failing.
The first hurdle was removing the worm which had been soldered to the motor shaft.  I had to use resistance soldering tweezers
to heat the motor shaft enough to remove the worm.  Now to make a bushing to  adapt the 2mm motor shaft to the 2.4mm ID of the worm.
The next post will illustrate how that went.

Larry,
Getting the quote a second time, thanks.
Interesting that a quote from a comedic novel would have such serious connotations.

Change in No E-Mail delivery option to Special Notices Only

SP4149

All,

Recently I have been transferring four old YG lists to new lists on groups.io

There is one recurring problem, a few members immediately quit the new group when they are welcomed as new members.

Prior to the group transfers, Special notices/messages were sent to inform YG list members of the impending transfer.

However if the member had set YG subscription to No E-mails, they will not receive the Special Notice transfer message and may reject the Welcome letter and unsubscribe from the new list on groups.io

In retrospect this was a major deficiency in the YG lists, and when these lists transferred to groups.io, the problem transferred.

Groups.io has another delivery option, Special Notices Only  This is also a no e-mail option, however the member will receive Special Notices (from the Moderators only) when they are issued.

Starting today No E-Mail will no longer be a delivery option, instead it has been changed to Special Notices Only as the no e-mail option.

This was done at the moderator level for all members who had been subscribed to No E-Mail
Members do not need to take action.

FWIW I do not issue Special Notices very often, maybe six times in 16 years on YG lists;

But as a result I lost dozens of members who did not receive notice of the move to groups.io and quit the new list.

What do you mean by "it only runs in reverse"?

Is it possible that the 2 wire plug between the engine and tender has had the clip removed and been installed the opposite of what it should be? It could also be the 4 wire which is flipped, I don't recall exactly which wires are in which plug. This is assuming you're running on DC, if it's DCC then it could be a programming issue.

Thanks for adding me

Invitation to join groups.io accepted.

Ken Clark

At noon today the invitation to join groups.io was accepted and transfer (copying of the group database) has been requested?.

When the transfer is complete, including membership profiles, all members who were successfully transferred will receive a "Welcome Letter".  At that time replies to e-mails will be posted automatically.

Searching the list database requires access to the web site and a groups.io password (same for all groups.io lists).  Yahoo passwords needed to access the YG website will not be transferred.

It took 5 days for the invitation letter to be accepted, it may make that long as well for the transfer to occur.

Re: Decision Time For HO Steam - Poll

Ken Clark

So far 4 list members have voted to move the list, out of the 4 who voted.
Less than 1% of the members, maybe the messages aren't getting to all members
and no one has complained.

Since it costs nothing for a free groups.io list, I created HO-Steam as the
destination list on groups.io

The next step is to invite the transfer agent  transfer@groups.io to join HOSteam@YG
list.  When this was attempted, YG issued an error code.  YG appears to be doing this for
attempts at inviting transfer@groups.io
The result has been hundreds of duplicate invitations flooding groups.io

groups.io insist to ignore the error message and be patient.  It has been two days and the invitation
has not been accepted; there may be more problems with group transfers than have been discussed.
This is preliminary setup work that must be done before a request to transfer (copy) the list
database to groups.io can be sent.  If transfer@groups.io cannot become a member, then other
options for the future of the group will need to be discussed.

HI Ken

I agree. a move seems like a good idea. A couple of other groups I'm in have done so already

John,
One thing a move will show is how many members are really on this list.
My other list lost 10% of it's members just due to dead e-mail addresses.

Maybe it should be moved now as it seems nothing is being done at Yahoo to assure the future.

Again I have not experienced these problems but then several of the groups I belong to I just for information reading enjoyment.

The only thing I will say about moving to group.io is if you post any photos please also post a message saying what they are about and the name of the album you posted them to. Otherwise they can be very hard to track down in io groups.

So far as email passwords, I just keep using my Yahoo email (I’ve had it since the middle 90’s and everyone I know has it). I have no problem ether receiving or sending group.io messages.

You will need a groups.io password which is easy to set up and, like Ken said, you have to do when you join your first groups.io group.

That doesn’t mean there is any problem with using a Yahoo email account, or any other that I’m aware of, in groups.io, you just need one for accessing the all parts of a groups.io group.

All,

I have been list owner for over ten years, during that time discussions have slowly dies off or moved to other groups like DCC or Repowering or RR specific. Below are the yearly message counts for this list:

2018 -1

2017 -13

2016 -22

2015 -29

2014 -19

2013 -85

2012 -62

2011 -105

2010 -82

I am list owner/moderator for two YahooGroups lists. I moved the other larger and more active list (RepowerAndRegear) to groups.io last month. There was widespread concern over the failing YG lists file structure and management functions. Owners and members would be locked out of photos, files, messages, and memberships for up to a week or more. I joined the GroupManagers Forum on YahooGroups and can report there is no commitment to YG lists future, only that there will be a notice prior to shut down. Moving the list when YG implodes will not be possible. So far we are enjoying our new home on groups.io

Now is the time to discuss the future of this group of over 500 members. I can easily (at the moment) move the list to groups.io, the message archives, files and photos will be copied over there. All members of this YG list will become members of the new groups.io list; members will have to do nothing receive e-mails. The only thing that will not be copied is your Yahoo password; to access the groups.io website you will need a groups.io password. There is only one groups.io password for all groups.io lists; if you already have one from another groups.io list membership, you are good to go. Otherwise follow the instructions to create a new groups.io password.

Please consider the choices of this poll. There are other location choices like Facebook Groups and Google Groups that are not listed, because I wouldn't move the list there; it would have to be done by a new owner.

About every two weeks YG lists suffer another file/database shutdown; it's very noticeable on very active lists.

1/2014 Model Railroader states the following:

The Bachmann model matches a photo of an 0-6-0 side tank locomotive shown in the 1892 Porter catalog. The major dimensions of the model, including its 11-foot wheelbase and 50" drivers place it as a class C S-K locomotive between 75 and 83 tons.
