Micro Mark Selling copies of NWSL Tools

Ken Clark

? Micro? Mark has started selling "reproductions" of the NWSL Sensi-Press and Riveter, along with most of the accessories.? MicroMark had attempted to purchase just the NWSL tools product line but Fred insisted on selling the company intact.? When the new owners of NWSL started shipping orders to MicroMark, the products were rejected on ground of "inferior" quality.? Each side has accused the other of a failure to communicate; it does appear that when the old and new NWSL owners corresponded with MM, MicroMark does not acknowledge.? NWSL simply repackages most of the accessory items, buying from industrial suppliers, yet MM returned them on "quality" grounds.

? It does seem that MM did not like being rebuffed in it's purchase of the NWSL Tools line and?afterwards planned to introduce their own line of "NWSL Reproduction Tools".? Once their own?"tool" were in the production pipeline, they could return NWSL products and fill orders with their "Repros".? I can only speculate if they made an offer to 'cherry pick' Hobbytown parts before selling their version of the Hobbytown universal.? For NWSL's new owners this is an unwelcome development; having recently purchased a company and now having a major customer "reproducing" your products.? In some e-mails MM claims the products are an improvement on the NWSL tools, although they don't say that much in their on-line catalog.

? I have both NWSL tools and really don't have much interest in buying replacements from either? MM or NWSL.? It's the accessories that concern me.? MM has done what it has done and it isn't going to change for the good of the hobby (think Mike's Train House).? As an extremely large retailer they should prevail and force NWSL to discontinue production of it's tools.? My question is "Will the MM accessories for their "Repro Riveter & Sensi Press" fit my older NWSL Sensi Press and Riveter.? To keep it simple for them to answer, I will ask that question in a separate e-mail for each accessory.? For any NWSL accessories not "Repro-ed", I will ask if they intend to make a "repro" available in the future when I am sure that they will have forced NWSL out of the hobby tool?business.

? This is a sad development.? The hobby needs a successful NWSL more than it needs a more successful MicroMark.? NWSL would have little incentive to develop new products for hobbyists with the threat of MM "Cloning the Best".

Re: Headlight lenses

Rob
I had made some lenses once a long time ago and they still look good now. Take an old plastic coffee can lid and mix up some clear epoxy and dribble it on the lid in drops. When dry just pop them off and trim and fit. I think some thick CA will work too. No mixing. They also make good caboose and structure windows.

Dear Group,

I purchased a MV lense once, and the on I had was coated on the back, for display only, on a brass steamer. If you want yours to light up for operation, I suggest that you put in a bulb (I like Model Power #381's personally), and then make the lense yourself out of epoxy. The gray stuff on the MV lense did not come off for me.

Hope this helps someone,

I've always found this to be the best looking solution for steam era
headlights.

Use an MV brand lens. From the backside drill a small hole about half-way
through the thickness of the lens. Glue the tip of the smallest
incandescent filament bulb into said hole and install in the headlight
housing..

The bulb tip's reflection on the silvered back of the MV lens looks just
like real steam era lights.

Re: [HOsteam] Need some help.

mwbauers

I just remembered.......

Where the worm gear on those shafts enter the gear tower of the powered axles........

If one or both of those worms are traveling back or forth in the casing while the engine is moving forward .......... and there are no spacer/washers between the gear and the inner casing. Then the worm can walk off the drive gear under it, and jam up against the wall of the gearbox.

This is from a fair-sized open gap between the end of the worm and the gear-case wall. The fix for that are spacer washers again. Not enough to jam-tight that space. Just enough to prevent that gear from shoving itself back with the shaft and jamming against the gearbox wall.

We used to get shaft washers from Athearn, I think we have to get them from NWSL since Horizon bought out Athearn.

What you need to look carefully at is if either of the drive shafts
coming out of the motor is if there is noticeable shifting and then
binding when you run forward.

If you see this in one of the shafts, you may need to add a spacer of
a washer or two to the shaft.

Your motor shaft can also be the one that is sifting and binding. The
fix is similar.

Do some more test running and see if either of the drive shafts or the
motor shaft is sort of traveling forward and thus jamming during that
direction of travel.
