TIMESAVER ORIGINAL ARTICLE

Casey Sterbenz

Friends,

As I recall, the original Timesaver article by John Allen appeared in Model
Railroader for November 1972. Reprints of that article (or of any Model
Railroader article) are available from Kalmbach Publishing by calling
1-800-533-6644. Photocopies are $3 per article with a minimum order of $5,
last time I looked.

A search of the model railroad magazine index at
http://www.accurail.com/tm.exe shows 14 articles with the keyword
"Timesaver" in the title.

Absolutely on topic so long as you use an H0 steam switcher! :-)

Tom,

This is the one I'm familiar with. I believe it was called the timesaver,
because that was the essense of the switching game you played on it. I use
it at one of my stations for operating interest, though it's not
particularly prototypical:

Also, try http://www.google.com and type "railroad timesaver". A couple
diagrams show up in the listings like
http://www.aracnet.com/~cec/bcsj/timesvr.html

Hope this helps!

I know this is off track for this site, but I'm looking for the space saver
switch design that I think John Allen or John Armstrong drew many years ago.
Can any one supply a rough drawing or where to look for it ? Thanks for any
help, Tom

Are these by chance the same NYC Consolidations that the Missouri &
Arkansas bought? If so, I'm trying to model one from a AHM Consol,
and was wondering where I could get the correct domes and cab?

Eric,

Much thanx for the info about the NYC/Rutland 2-8-0. That sounds just like
what I'm looking for. Would you have any info about where I could get some
photos or drawings of this engine? I found a few photos of what appear to
be similar engines at http://www.dnaco.net/~gelwood/, a site that features
photos of fallen flag railroads.

I have the Oct '74 MRR so I'll look up the article you mentioned. I also
checked the web site you listed and that looks like some interesting
information for developing boiler sections.

Re: VARNEY/BOWSER 2-8-0

eric wolfsbane <wolfsbane@...>

You could try a NYC/Rutland G-34[] class consolidation.

DWB seventeen feet
TWB twenty five feet and nine inches
B/S 22.5 by 30 inches
piston valve Stephenson valve gear
DD sixty three inches
LTD thirty inches

The varney/bowser old lady consolidation is close with the following
dimensions:

DWB 17'-9"
TWB 27'-11"
DD 62"
LTD 33 OR 30"

Theres an excellent article regarding constructing styrene locomotives
titled 'The locomotive You Wanted But Couldn't Get' It's in the October 1974
Model Railroader, page 40. It was written by
Monte Hoffmann. If you don't have access to the magazine email me privately.

It describes building a boiler up from a plastic tube to the proper profile
with .010 sheet styrene. it also talks about turning domes and such with an
electric drill, making cabs and tenders out out styrene.

You might find the following website useful. It's a shroud calculator for
model rocketry. It can also be used to create sections of tapered boilers on
steam locomotives as per the techniques in the Hoffmann article.

No thank you the 3 gifs took about 4 minutes extra to download
and took up space on my hard drive. I now have to find them and selete
them as I do not need them. Any pictures to be uploaded to the files
area so interested members can download them, other members can ignore the
files.

Thanks

OK, no attachments

Extrapolating the results from the small returns so far, I have turned off
file attach (I thought it was an automatic feature of onelist). If there is
a late surge of overwhelming YES votes then I might have my arm twisted -
but I can't type whilst my arm is twisted, so there!

Thanks guys.

Now back to steam. Anyone seen a picture of the Spectrum Decapod yet? It
wasn't on the Bachmann page last time I looked. It would be good to have
URLs of images posted here.

Robert,

Please, please take the HO Steam list off your CC list when you are sending images to Casey. I'm taking a straw poll on whether listers want attachments allowed and so far it is a resounding NO.

Well, that is interesting. I thought Onelist stripped out attachments and the only way to share files was by using the files area.

Before I go and disable the file attach feature let me consult with you who are users of the list.
