Actually looks like a nice big boiler, could put a nice sized can motor (2032) in that space. The real problem is the non-idler gearbox, wastes a lot of space because the motor interferes with the frame. An idler gearbox moves the worm shaft away from the frame allowing mounting of the motor next to the gearbox in some cases. With a single shaft Sagami 2032, I even got a flywheel in a smaller space, with the worm mounted on the motor shaft using a KTM idler gearbox, only 2 inches from the gearbox to the back of the motor.
