Yes, it can be modified anytime, either by an admin or the member themselves.

There are four ways to populate the Display Name that I'm aware of:
  • It can be added in conjunction with sending an Invite/Direct Add (per the current discussion)
  • If blank, it is often auto-populated when that member's first message posts (gleaned from the incoming email header).
  • Display Name is an editable field for each member's record in the Member List
  • Each member can manually change their Display Name by editing their account and/or group profile

noticed Bruce said about an error in the documentation - didnt like to butt in 

If providing both, the email address has to be placed in angle brackets, not the display name.
so just to be quite clear the member should be invited in the list copied to the invite as eg 


Member1 Name <email address1>
Member2 Name <email address2>
