2. Post to the old group that it is being discontinued due to lack of an owner. Tell them how to join the new group.

The unfortunate part here is that an orphan group can't be a paid group
since nobody has the rights to pay. The current way still doesn't give this
group a path for help. That would seem to leave them

Not everyone is ignored, only those that don't own a paid group, from which Mark earns his living. By my most recent estimate, there are almost 4.9 million user accounts on groups.io, so it makes

for clarification, a Digest contains the message text so there's no need to go to the Groups.io site. A Daily Summary just contains a list of topics with links to the message text on the Groups.io
