Re: Transfer Group from Yahoo

I set my old group to "Moderated" after our transfer.  By doing that, I don't have to check YG at all.  If anyone tries to post or to subscribe, I will get a message that my approval is required. That way I can communicate directly with the sender.

This is a YG question - but is there a way to set up an auto reply ("We have moved, come visit us at...") so we don't have to keep checking the YG page and sending back this response to those who continue to post to YG? (based on past changes, this will be a big issue for us unfortunately). We of course will be sending out messages about the move, before and after, but seems many people don't read... We don't really want to disallow posting, at least for awhile. We have many older members to whom the group is an important way to feel connected to our community, but they seem to struggle with details.

Re: "Pending Subscription" message didn't send correctly

I did actually remember to check the timestamps and they were out of order. I guess it could've been a gmail thing, but that's not the impression I got.

I never did receive the "owner" email. I had to go check it on the website. As the moderator, will he have the option for the "owner" emails on his subscription?  Nix that, I just checked his membership subscription and it's set to send him the "owner" email as well. I'll ask him if he did.

Any idea why I wouldn't have received the "owner" email (the response to my "pending subscription" message, that is)? I waited about 10-15 minutes for it before checking on the website.  I *much* prefer to do everything through email rather than have to logon to the website.

Thanks for your help,

Matt

Marina,

You're very welcome.  Sometimes those of us that have been here for 2 or 3 years don't realize how much information there is to absorb.  We got to learn it a bit at a time, slowly, as the features were introduced.  When I joined, there were no Files, Photos, Calendar, Hashtags, Directory, Wiki, or Databases!  (and probably a few others that I've forgotten about. ;>)

"Pending Subscription" message didn't send correctly

Matthew King - AK4MK

I just created a "Pending Subscription" message in my 070Club group.

I used my alternate email address to subscribe to the group as a test, expecting to see my message come to me, asking for info about the user. Well, I received a "Confirm Your Groups.io Subscription" email 4 minutes later. I replied to the email to confirm my subscription.

At the same time, as the owner of the group, I received a "Subscription Approval Needed" email. I replied to that to approve the membership, kind of wondering why I hadn't received the "Pending Subscription" message yet.

1 minute later, I received my group's "Welcome" message to the alternate address, and a "New Subscriber" message to my main email (as the owner of the group).

AFTER that, by about 2-3 minutes, I received a "Your pending membership" message, asking me to tell a little about myself so that I might be approved.

Obviously the order of things is screwed up here. Do I need to just tell my moderator (the guy that approves all the pending subscriptions) to simply wait until he receives the "pending membership" message response to approve the membership request?  Or is something wrong with the send order of the messages?

Also, I notice that the "pending membership" message comes from (more importantly, will go to) the "070Clubowner@groups.io" email address. Will the MODERATOR receive this message, or just me as the owner?

Thanks for your help,

Matt

>> By "post to the group after" - how does that work?

It means that you will have to figure out your own way to cut each message out of the YG (or your incoming email client) and cross-post them into the new group, in some manner that you find the least objectionable.

I know of no way to force the messages to appear to come from the original poster. If you have a lot of time on your hands, you could insert some text at the top of each such message stating who originally posted it, but the message headers will still show you as the cross-poster.

Am I correct that the message sent to the group post-transfer will be the "welcome" message we set up, not something automated, which may be confusing to members?

Thank you Bruce and Shal, that was very helpful.
By "post to the group after" - how does that work? Would the post on the GIO show as coming from the member?
(The only way I can think of is to copy and forward the messages from a moderator account)

I need to test this feature a bit more.

On the group Settings page, in the Privacy section, there's a drop down box for "Hide Email Addresses In Archives".  The choices are "Mask all email addresses in the web archives." (default, I think) or "Do not mask email addresses in the archives."  I chose not to hide them when this was changed a few weeks ago, but they still weren't showing up.  I just did a test and it seems to work properly now, but I didn't test thoroughly.

Re: After the transfer, some YG subscribers immediately opt out of new list on groups.io

SP4149

I have been transferring four YG lists to groups.io, three are complete, one in process.
On the last one transfer was completed the day after transfer@groups.io was made a moderator
using the new transfer protocol.  Actually caught me by surprise as I was out of town and had written
a Welcome Letter message.

However I think the YG members opting out of groups.io subscribed to no e-mail on YG lists.  Evidently they
do not get special notices from YG lists and were not notified of the transfer.  I can't change YG lists
now that I am gone, but I did make Special Notices Only the default for No E-mails on my groups.io lists

Go to Admin->Settings and scroll down to Privacy. Do you have "private archives" turned on? Even non-members can view the messages if this flag is not set.

If you have private archives turned on and pending members can read them anyway, this behavior is definitely surprising and should be reported as a bug (support@groups.io).

I don't get the hashtag thing either!

While I have everyone's attention (new to IO thus the perhaps silly question)..............

I'm asking what the story is with masking email addresses so any would-be trolls, spammers, address harvesters, and other bad guys can't see other members' email addresses? Is there a way to set the group to do that?

Thank you to any and all who might reply

I don't mean to use the same hashtags I set for the group posting, I'd like to have a separate hashtag #reminder just for the calendar.

I edited the original hashtag "cal-invite" to "reminder" after the event was displayed in the group, but I found out that the new hashtag did not work for subsequent events.
Two later events were marked with two different hashtags: #cal-reminder and #cal-notice.

Sorry for the dumb question, but I don't understand how it works.

Thank you for your help.

Re: Receive messages twice

There is a configuration option to avoid getting your own posts back from the group.

https://groups.io/static/help#dupemail

Personally, I like having something to confirm that the message actually went through and was posted to the group. Perhaps it's a relic of our YG days, when the odds of this actually happening were not good.

New members in pendingmodus

When I have a new member -not approved yet- he/she can see all the messages of the group. Don't want that.  Want new members in a pendingmodus, how do I do that.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Transfer Group from Yahoo

Al Silverstein <silversteina@...>

Shal,

How many groups at groups.io have a subscriber base over 5,000 members? I belong to over 20 loosely related Yahoo Groups. I am the owner or moderator 8 of those related groups. Only the 1 that is currently in the transfer queue has over 3,500 members, 6 more are between 1000 and 3,500 members with the remaining 13 under 1,000 members.

I had my first experience with groups.io on 4 February when I started to research groups.io as an alternative to Yahoo groups. I read for three days everything I could about groups.io. The two features that struck my interest were was the ability to eliminate the "No Email" delivery and the ability to download the entire subscriber base. I did not know until the 24 February a message was sent from groups.io titled "You have been added to the GroupEmailAddress". I have not yet received such a message. This message would not have identified those with no longer an interest in our group but it would have at least the identification of those subscribers who no longer have a valid email address.

Note here when I did a test download of the membership data base I found that the header giving the number code for the type of email delivery did not match the identifier for some of the members. The range of the status is 0-3. I had no 3's as that is for no email. I did have a fair number of 4's. When I check those with a 4 against the same user information I had from Yahoo I found a 4 was really a subscriber who had elected "Digest" delivery.

In the almost 20 years our group has been associated with Yahoo we have sent out only three "Special Notices". I have been a moderator or one of the co-owners of the Yahoo Group in question for over 15 years.

We choose to eliminate the "No Email" not to antagonize those that only want the one way communication with the list but rather to cleanup our subscriber base. We have an message ready that we will be transmitting to all of our subscribers, under "Special Notice" that the transfer is complete. We have included that we no longer will accept the "No Email" delivery option and that those that had chosen the "No Email" delivery where converted to "Special Notice" delivery. We have included instructions on how to unsubscribe from the new group if they no longer desire to be a member for any personal reason.

We have no idea how many of our previous subscribers we will loose because they are on a bouncing email list. We have no idea how many of our "No Email' subscribers on the we will loose because they no longer have chosen "No Email" and no longer have a valid email address. We have no idea how many members will choose to unsubscribe because they have no longer have an interest in what our group has to offer. We just do not know.

The elimination of the "No Email" delivery may seem harsh but it has become a necessary means to rid the our group of those that no longer can be reached or no longer have an interest in our group activity.
