Shal,

Have you noticed the up tick in Message History since December? Must be related to transfers from other places to Groups.IO.

Re: "Pending Subscription" message didn't send correctly

Drew

Short answer: yes, you do have to wait until owner/moderator receives the "Re: Your pending subscription to the XXXXX group on Groups.IO" message before approving.

This is why I have requested the capability for new subscribers to include required info in their initial email to the group's +subscribe address. The Pending Member Notice is really not the ideal way to handle requests for additional subscriber information. Each email back-and-forth is an opportunity for things to go awry. Then owner/moderator is faced with additional tasks of keeping track of additional people on the "Pending Approval" list who for whatever reason do not respond with the required info; then we have to send followup emails requesting the information again, etc. And finally remove them from the Pending Approval list after a month or so of no response.

Also, I notice that the "pending membership" message comes from (more

the MODERATOR receive this message, or just me as the owner?

someone who unsubscribes then is able to resubscribe without my permission

Harlan Steinle

My group just recently was transferred (almost 2,000) from yahoo to groups.io.  So I’ve spent the last few hours cleaning up problems, most of which I made myself.  For example, I removed the ‘first two posts moderated’ rule and allowed all to immediately post.  If I was to do it over, I certainly wouldn’t remove that option (something those of you in the process of transferring might take into consideration).  What has happened is members mail boxes have been flooded with “I’m just testing’ types of messages which when you have 2,000 members can be overwhelming.

Here is my question for the gurus—with yahoo if someone unsubscribed themselves then they could NOT get resubscribed unless I approved the process.  With groups.io I just had a member who had unsubscribed be able to just resubscribe herself (based on the message I got from groups.io).  Is this normal?  I’m not saying it is necessary a BAD situation as I haven’t had a chance to check it out, namely to be sure she wasn’t ‘moderated’ then came back on and wasn’t.  So, is there a setting I can change (as I didn’t see one) that addresses what happens when someone unsubscribes then wants back on?

For what it is worth.  The canned message that goes to people AFTER the transfer makes it too easy—in my opinion—to ‘unsubscribe’—I lost a LOT of subscribers who just didn’t read the info I sent to them BEFORE the transfer.  I added my OWN wording in the space I was allowed to add, but I couldn’t change the ‘canned groups.io’ wording so I also had a lot of people go directly TO the groups.io page and things REALLY got confusing to them as they thought they had to subscribe again and misinterpreted the cover page thinking they could use hashtags (I have that function unavailable to members right now) wiki (also disabled right now) etc and when they couldn’t they sent me one of hundreds of emails I’ve gotten this morning.

All in ALL I would STILL make the switch from Yahoo to Groups.io WITHOUT a doubt.  Just saying it COULD have been a little smoother for me—but based on future potential with what my members can now do that they couldn’t on Yahoo AND the fact I can ACTUALLY get owner/moderator help, this move was a no-brainer.  I feel VERY fortunate this venue was available for a replacement to Yahoo.  THANKS to all you on this site who are so helpful.

Owner messages

Matthew King - AK4MK

OK - I got most of this sorted out with regards to the order in which emails (primarily my Pending Membership email) come out.

The problem now is this. My moderator received the "Owner message" response to the "Pending Membership" email, but I never did. Our subscriptions are setup identically. Does the system send one email and call it good, failing to look for others that should receive it?  Any other ideas of why I didn't receive the "owner message" (I am, after all, the owner!) but the moderator did?

Thanks again for y'all's help!

This chrono order situation actually does seem to be some sort of problem. I even posted on beta about a weird situation yesterday where a member received and clicked on his "confirm" email before I received the pending subscription notice. Hours went by and i did not receive the notification. Only after the member confirmed did I receive it.

More to the point of this thread, the Pending Subscription Member Notice is sometimes not received at all by the person requesting membership. This has been an ongoing problem in my group for a long, long time and one that I've posted about here, in beta, and to Mark at support. Some of you here may remember it, and I know that at least one other member here, someone who recently moved from Y!G (although I can't remember who at the moment), has expressed having the same problem.

Any idea why I wouldn't have received the "owner" email (the response to my "pending subscription" message, that is)? I waited about 10-15 minutes for it before checking on the website.  I *much* prefer to do everything through email rather than have to logon to the website.

I set my old group to "Moderated" after our transfer.  By doing that, I don't have to check YG at all.  If anyone tries to post or to subscribe, I will get a message that my approval is required. That way I can communicate directly with the sender.

(based on past changes, this will be a big issue for us unfortunately). We of course will be sending out messages about the move, before and after, but seems many people don't read... We don't really want to disallow posting, at least for awhile. We have many older members to whom the group is an important way to feel connected to our community, but they seem to struggle with details.

Marina,

You're very welcome.  Sometimes those of us that have been here for 2 or 3 years don't realize how much information there is to absorb.  We got to learn it a bit at a time, slowly, as the features were introduced.  When I joined, there were no Files, Photos, Calendar, Hashtags, Directory, Wiki, or Databases!  (and probably a few others that I've forgotten about. ;>)

"Pending Subscription" message didn't send correctly

Re: Q: posts during the transfer/welcome message/size to save attachments?

>> By "post to the group after" - how does that work?

It means that you will have to figure out your own way to cut each message out of the YG (or your incoming email client) and cross-post them into the new group, in some manner that you find the least objectionable.

I know of no way to force the messages to appear to come from the original poster. If you have a lot of time on your hands, you could insert some text at the top of each such message stating who originally posted it, but the message headers will still show you as the cross-poster.

Am I correct that the message sent to the group post-transfer will be the "welcome" message we set up, not something automated, which may be confusing to members?

Thank you Bruce and Shal, that was very helpful.
By "post to the group after" - how does that work? Would the post on the GIO show as coming from the member?
(The only way I can think of is to copy and forward the messages from a moderator account)

On the group Settings page, in the Privacy section, there's a drop down box for "Hide Email Addresses In Archives".  The choices are "Mask all email addresses in the web archives." (default, I think) or "Do not mask email addresses in the archives."  I chose not to hide them when this was changed a few weeks ago, but they still weren't showing up.  I just did a test and it seems to work properly now, but I didn't test thoroughly.

Re: After the transfer, some YG subscribers immediately opt out of new list on groups.io

SP4149

I have been transferring four YG lists to groups.io, three are complete, one in process.
On the last one transfer was completed the day after transfer@groups.io was made a moderator
using the new transfer protocol.  Actually caught me by surprise as I was out of town and had written
a Welcome Letter message.

However I think the YG members opting out of groups.io subscribed to no e-mail on YG lists.  Evidently they
do not get special notices from YG lists and were not notified of the transfer.  I can't change YG lists
now that I am gone, but I did make Special Notices Only the default for No E-mails on my groups.io lists

Go to Admin->Settings and scroll down to Privacy. Do you have "private archives" turned on? Even non-members can view the messages if this flag is not set.

If you have private archives turned on and pending members can read them anyway, this behavior is definitely surprising and should be reported as a bug (support@groups.io).

I don't get the hashtag thing either!

While I have everyone's attention (new to IO thus the perhaps silly question)..............

I'm asking what the story is with masking email addresses so any would-be trolls, spammers, address harvesters, and other bad guys can't see other members' email addresses? Is there a way to set the group to do that?

Thank you to any and all who might reply

Subject: [GMF] Change/customize automatic calendar hashtag #hashtag #calendar

Is there a way to change the hashtag which the calendar appends automatically to each event?
I don't mean to use the same hashtags I set for the group posting, I'd like to have a separate hashtag #reminder just for the calendar.

I edited the original hashtag "cal-invite" to "reminder" after the event was displayed in the group, but I found out that the new hashtag did not work for subsequent events.
Two later events were marked with two different hashtags: #cal-reminder and #cal-notice.

Sorry for the dumb question, but I don't understand how it works.

Thank you for your help.
