Re: Waiting List

John McLachlan

My guess is probably no.  :)

Unfortunately, Y! is melting down right now, and word of groups.io is spreading like wildfire, so I think the .io team is just overwhelmed at the moment.

I doubt your request has been lost, but things taking at least a week to happen is becoming the norm at the moment.

Neither do I.
I am in the same predicament.

Same question. Is there a way to know if the invite was received and approx how many groups are in line before mine?
My Yahoo group has gone dead, apart from my reassuring messages about our new home.
We are all waiting for the transfer and some members are starting to leave.

Re: Mute Hashtags?

Marina

Thank you, J_Catlady.

To follow a topic, go to the home page groups.io. Under “Topics,” click on
“All” to bring up a list of all the topics in the totality of your groups.
To follow a topic, click on it, and then on “Follow This Topic.”
Since the groups.io page shows a list of your groups, it would be easier to have the opportunity to select just the group whose topics you wish to manage.
Otherwise, if you are member of several groups you get a jungle of topics.

*Following a hashtag*
To follow a hashtag, go to the home page groups.io. Under “Hashtags,”
click
on “Muted,” and then on “+Follow a New Hashtag.” Enter the name of the
hashtag (be sure to include the # sign), the group name in which you want
to follow it, and the duration (“forever,” “one hour,” etc.).
I throw in the towel. This is really too tortuous for my average members.
I think I'll just tell them to go on like they did on Yahoo, setting up a filter in their own email client.

Wiki Formatting

Sharon Villines

Shal,

On the wiki page for this group, you have:

[TOC:Contents:2]

This command inserts a TOC. Where did you learn this? What is it referring to — I know what it does but how is it determined?

Re: Length of Group description in Groups Directory #suggestion

After a little roaming through the directory, it looks like the amount of information included depends on the formatting of the description.  The 'fancier' it is, the less that is included.  A simple text description has up to about 3 1/2 to 4 lines, an html description has less.  As a guess, I'd say it's a limited number of characters, including any formatting information.  A rough test says it's about 400 characters.

Re: own messages not coming through email today? - Invites Lost?

J_Catlady <j.olivia.catlady@...>

The email server did run out of memory yesterday, but only because someone sent two 80 MB messages through. It was fixed a couple of hours later, and this only affected messages send for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon. I don't think anything was lost, but you could ask Mark at support about it.

From this message it seems if the e-mail server ran out of memory then invites were being lost.
How long should we wait before resending invites?

Length of Group description in Groups Directory #suggestion

Marina

I looked up for my group using the Find a Group tab and I noticed that my group description was abruptly cut off, showing just a line and a half, while most groups had (more or less) longer descriptions. Where did I go wrong?

In general, group descriptions in the Groups Directory vary in length. I wonder if it would be possibile to have a set length, e.g. only the first 3 or 4 lines of a group description are shown in the Directory.
This would grant all groups equal visibility and give a tidier appearance to the Directory.

Arranging photo folders chronologically

Our group is new. We have noticed that photo folders seem to be arranged alphabetically. Is there a setting that can have them arranged with the most recent folder first, and so forth?

Re: Mute Hashtags?

J_Catlady <j.olivia.catlady@...>

Here is some tentative documentation I've written about muting and following. It hasn't been reviewed by anyone yet and there are several open questions I still have about it, but this should do for now.

J

-----------------------------

You have the option to mute, or conversely, specifically follow, individual topics and hashtags.

Muting topics and hashtags

You can choose not to receive emails from a specific topic, or with a certain hashtag, by clicking on the “Mute This Topic” or the “Mute [#hashtag-name]” link at the bottom of any email in the topic or with the hashtag. (Note: some hashtags in a group may be coded by moderators to be unmutable.) Muting a topic or hashtag ensures that you will not receive any more of the emails from that topic or hashtag. If your Email Delivery method is Daily Summary, Plain Digest, or Full Featured Digest, your summary or digest will filter out those messages and not contain them.

When muting a hashtag, you are given the opportunity to pick which group you’re muting it in (in case the hashtag exists in more than one of your groupsYou will also be able to specify a duration for the muting, for example, “Forever,” “One Hour,” etc.

You can see all the topics and hashtags you have muted by going to the home page groups.io and clicking on “Muted” under either “Topics” or “Hashtags,” respectively. You can also mute a new hashtag by going to the list of muted hashtags (“Muted” under “Hashtags”) and clicking on “+Mute a New Hashtag.”

“Unmuting” a topic or hashtag

To “unmute” a topic or hashtag you have muted, go the groups.io home page, click on “Muted” on under either “Topics” or “Hashtags,” respectively, to bring a list of the ones you have muted, click on the topic or hashtag you want to unmute, and click on “Unmute This Topic” or “Unmute This Hashtag,” respectively.

Following topics and hashtags

Instead of excluding topics and hashtags by muting them, you can start from the ground up, picking out exclusively the ones you want to receive by “following” them.

To set up your subscription for following topics or hashtags, click on “Advanced Preferences” from your Subscription page, and under “Message Selection,” select “Following Only.” You can also click on “First Message Also,” which will ensure that in addition to messages in topics you specifically follow, you also receive the first message in any new topic. A second option, “Auto Follow Replies,” will add to your “Followed” list any topic you start or reply to.

After you’ve set up your delivery to “Following Only,” you can pick the topics and/or hashtags you want to follow. The methods for following topics and following hashtags are slightly different from each other:

Following a topic

To follow a topic, go to the home page groups.io. Under “Topics,” click on “All” to bring up a list of all the topics in the totality of your groups. To follow a topic, click on it, and then on “Follow This Topic.”

Following a hashtag

To follow a hashtag, go to the home page groups.io. Under “Hashtags,” click on “Muted,” and then on “+Follow a New Hashtag.” Enter the name of the hashtag (be sure to include the # sign), the group name in which you want to follow it, and the duration (“forever,” “one hour,” etc.).

You can see all the topics and hashtags you have followed by going to the home page groups.io and clicking on “Followed” under “Topics” or “Hashtags,” respectively.

Unfollowing topics and hashtags you have followed

There are two ways to unfollow a topic or a hashtag you have followed. You can click on “Unfollow This Topic” or “Unfollow [#hashtag=name]” at the bottom of any email in the topic or with the hashtag, respectively. Or, you can go to the home page groups.io, find the topic or hashtag in your “Followed” list, click on it, and then click on “Unfollow This Topic” or “Unfollow This Hashtag.”

I was confused by this too. Where does a member choose to follow?

People will interpret it as having set an option somewhere and wonder if they are getting all the messages.

Subgroup calendars do not seem to appear on Web site, but _do_ appear on calendar subscripton (ICS file) #calendar

Titus Brown <titus@...>

Hi all,

I'm trying to set up a system of calendars for a large mailing list with many subgroups. The 'main' calendar (above all the subgroups) doesn't show events in the subgroups when I view it on the Web site, but when I add it to an iOS calendar via a subscription, I see all of the subgroup events (which is what I want!) Am I missing a feature or a setting, or is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong, or ...?

I can add screenshots if the problem isn't well described. Let me know :)

thanks! I love groups.io!

Re: Rotate photo sent by email

Duane

I don't see a way to rotate email attached photos as you can with others. On a regular, uploaded photo, you can choose Edit while looking at one, then select Rotate Left or Rotate Right, then Update.

Re: While we’re at it - merging

Duane

You would use Merge to combine two threads/topics.  You must be in Topic view, use the down arrow below the topic to select Start Merge, wait for the page to refresh, then use the down arrow below the Topic that you want to merge it into to select Merge Into, then verify that this is correct.  If you change your mind after starting a merge, you can select Cancel Merge from any drop down arrow.

Re: Question about Subject lines/splitting posts

Duane

No, you can't split an individual message.  You can split off a message to start a new thread.  As mentioned, anyone that replies using the original subject/title will have their replies in the original thread.  Any with the new subject would go in the new thread.  That's why splitting isn't recommended for an active topic.  Folks that only use email will tend to reply to the original which wouldn't have the new subject.

Rotate photo sent by email

Frances

Hi everyone,

My nephew sent a new baby picture to our family group but it is sideways. I don't want to ask for a new one. And yes, likely we can each download it and rotate it for better viewing.

But is it possible to rotate it within Groups.io? The photo is attached to an email and thus in the default Emailed Photos album.
Thanks!
Frances

While we’re at it - merging

Nancy in Renton <sday13@...>

We talked about split, I don’t see a merge function. How would I merge two messages?

Nancy

Re: Question about Subject lines/splitting posts

Nancy in Renton <sday13@...>

So, you’re saying if a person uses one message and talks about two subjects I can use the split function, rename the second subject in the split and all replys to that second (now new) message will be tied to that subject line.

Will members be aware it’s a split or do I mention in the new message that it’s split off?

Nancy

Re: Mute Hashtags?

Marina

Thank you, Shal.
I pointed out the omission in Beta Group as suggested.

I must confess that I find it a bit difficult to manage Groups.io features. They are more complex that YG's ones. I wouldn't worry so much if weren't a group owner. But I know that at some point my members will turn to me for assistance in their own language.

For instance, I still haven't been able to figure out how to follow or mute topics and hashtags from the web.
At the bottom of each message in Digest there is a Mute this Topic link but not a Follow this Topic link.

In Groups.io Help, under the section Muting and Following, I read:
"In addition to the above subscription options, you have the option to mute individual discussion threads and hashtags. In the footer of each email is a link to mute the thread. And from the website, you can mute hashtags."

I find it a bit cryptic.
How do I mute hashtags from the website?
How do I follow specific topics or hashtags?

Under Subscription>Membership>Advanced Preferences I found a
Following Only option
"Only the messages in threads or hashtags you have chosen to follow are emailed to you, according to your Email Delivery Selection."

"Chosen to follow" means "that you have chosen not to mute"?

This is killing me.
