Re: Formatting a wiki table #wiki

I like a challenge so I played with this. I see two ways of doing it: take advantage of existing classes on GIO or, with the help of W3 Schools HTML Tables, use style tags on each element that requires styling.

Using existing classes takes a bit of sleuthing to inspect classes used on GIO so I really can't recommend this. As you have found, a class named table-bordered yields a border but doesn't provide padding within the cells for readability.

Instead, I recommend styling each element. In this case, you should set the border style for table, th (if used) and td but not tr because it isn't necessary. Add padding to each td style, as well. Then, on the rows that span all 10 columns, add the background-color style to pale yellow as you demonstrate above. Sure, it's a little tedious but it can be done.

The code I tried, based on your example above, is:

<table style="border: 1px solid black;">
    <tr>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">&nbsp;</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">all events shown</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">ordered by date/sort date</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">includes marriage</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">includes birth of children</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">shows date</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">shows place</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">shows names</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">shows ID num</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">editable</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; background-color: #ffffcc; padding: 4px;" colspan="10">TMG</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">Person View</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">yes</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">yes</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">yes</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">yes</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">yes</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">yes</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">yes</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">yes</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">yes</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; background-color: #ffffcc; padding: 4px;" colspan="10">Family Historian</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">Property Box &gt; Facts Tab</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">yes</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">yes</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">yes</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">optional</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">yes</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">B, D only by default but can be configured to show this for any fact type</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">yes, can turn on/off surnames</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">not by default but can be configured to show this for any fact type</td>
        <td style="border: 1px solid black; padding: 4px;">yes</td>
    </tr>
</table>

The above renders as:

  all events shown ordered by date/sort date includes marriage includes birth of children shows date shows place shows names shows ID num editable
TMG
Person View yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes
Family Historian
Property Box > Facts Tab yes yes yes optional yes B, D only by default but can be configured to show this for any fact type yes, can turn on/off surnames not by default but can be configured to show this for any fact type yes

I'm relatively sure that other styling could be applied to size columns or even the entire table.

Thanks for the update and useful to know. It sounds like you can effectively control the order of all your other messages in a digest that way then.  There was a change a while back to ensure that if you approve multiple messages at the same time, they are done in the order that they were received if that helps (see the last item on Beta #26090)

Invites - Sent Invitations checklist page

I've found a consistent inconsistency in the way this checkoff/page works and can't find an answer in the Help Group pages for this specific feature/anomaly.

The page is properly and consistently showing all sent invitations, but not status. I'll estimate that nearly 23% of the invitations sent, that are accepted, do not 'check off.' I've seen the 'New Member' notice and they show up in the Members List; All is normal and conventional there. But, as many as a few days afterward...they are still shown on the Sent Invitations checklist page as just "Sent", rather than "Accepted."
Since I'm not one to screw with something (in a computer) that may-or-may-not be working correctly, I have not acted on them: i.e. changed their status in the list by removing them. I don't want to 'delete' an 'active invitation' even though it has been accepted and they are active members.

Any ideas, anyone with a similar situation? And anyone with any suggestions? Thanks. Dan

Frankly, Lynn, I'd say you're doing better than most of us getting it to look the way you want.

You can try adding some inline styles (see https://www.w3schools.com/css/default.asp), but my experience says that most (if not all) of them will be stripped upon save. Failing that, you can try deprecated constructs such as border="1", bgcolor="yellow" and valign="top"...most browsers still recognize them as valid html and those that don't will ignore them.

Good luck,

Formatting a wiki table #wiki

Lynn McLaughlin

I'm new at this - helping to bring some pages from sites.google.com to groups.io, and I'm doing great except the tables look awful. I've read that they strip out a lot of in-line styles, and that is definitely biting me. By changing <table> to <table class="table-bordered">, which I found in the formatted css file someone kindly uploaded here, I was able to at least get grid lines, but that's all. This is how it looks in groups.io:

Here is how it looks in sites.google:

Though I'm new to groups.io and css, I have decades of software development experience which leads me to gnaw and gnaw on a problem like this, without knowing when to give up. If I'm at the end of the capabilities, then so be it.

You can only do the free trial if you select it when creating the group.  Once you've created a group as free/basic, you have to pay for any Premium use.

Upgrading to premium/free trial

I just tried to upgrade from a free group to a premium group.  I can't figure out how to get the free trial to start.  (It seems to be saying that it will bill me $20 from the beginning, not after 30 days).  How do I go from free group to premium free trial?

2 different problems by the sound of it.

Firstly... posts missing from Digests. Are you sure that it isn't complete Digests that are missing? If you still have the digest emails check that the numbers are indeed consecutive on a group by group basis. IMHO the more likely answer is that they aren't, and that some digests have not been delivered. If that turns out to the be the case than look at your own email delivery history (per group) to see if any have been bounced; check your spam box (particularly your service provider's spam box) so see if any have been shunted off there. Posts being omitted from Digests seems the least likely reason to me.

As to sent posts not appearing anywhere can you be certain that they were sent from the email address registered to the account in question, and not an unregistered address. If you are an owner / moderator with access to the Activity log for the group in question look there to see if there any clues contained therein.

Chris

I don't think so.  I'm pretty sure they're listed in chronological order, oldest first.  However, you may still have a way to do this.  As soon as a digest goes out, send a message with some info similar to what you want and claim it.  Then you can edit it before approval the next time and have it at the top (I think ;>)

I thought of one more possibility that may work. I'm going to try it out today and see:

I guess I'll find out around 6 am tomorrow.

I had posted a question to this group and had been wondering why no one responded, until I went in to the site and found that there were several responses  -  they just had not been included in the digest.
I also noticed that in another groups.io group, a post I sent didn't appear in either the digest or on the site.
Can someone tell me why this happens?

Re: How to moderate ONE member

Jan van Heiningen

Hi Donald,

Thank you. I recognise completely what you say. In every cart there are one or two bad apples.... One such ex-member unsubscribed himself (accidently?) from our group and you can imagine the relief. We are not reinstating him though indeed I do not exclude the possiibillity he may try to join under an alias. But his style is so uniquely his own (no compliment there) we will recognise him.

We will see what happens

With very best regards

We had to do that once or twice in a popular amateur radio group. If
the member doesn't respond in a positive manner to encouragement to do
the right thing, we remove them.

Of course, they can join again with another account, but they are much
less likely to be a problem then. It's likely they did join again
since it's so popular and informative, but we haven't had any issues
since then. The problem was a member acting condescending to others,
and he acted like he didn't understand what condescending meant. We
explained but he was belligerent, and we banned him.

We only did that to protect the friendly atmosphere of the group. We
don't need people like that. If they need us, though, they'll have to
join under a different account and play nicely.

We could have moderated the last person we banned and edited his
posts, but that would mean more work for the moderators, and I don't
see the value of keeping a person just to keep him or her. We're not
looking for numbers. We have plenty more joining than leaving. We're
looking for good discussions and exchanges of information.

Re: Can you issue a digest on command? One more thing...

Marc,

Ah, but the Wiki feature isn't available for a Basic group.

Oops. It depends on when the Basic group was created, but yes I forgot about that.

And of course, my idea of using a Sticky-Wiki to create a banner on digest messages isn't actually a feature of groups.io; someone would have to suggest it and Groups.io would have to implement it; the latter might be a long-shot.

So until the feature exists the question of upgrading to Premium might be moot unless there are other Premium features you want.

I need to pay $240 a year to get that feature

Or $220 if paid yearly.

But before committing myself to that sort of expenditure, I think I'll keep looking for a bit.

A feature that may help with that is the ability to have the group members sponsor the group:

Depending on the nature of the group that may work well, or may go over like a lead balloon. Use your own judgement on that.

Shal
