Groups.IO wiki and vision accessibility

Chris Gual <cgual206@...>

Hi,

I was wondering if other Groups.IO managers might have some insight into customizing the wiki to support people with vision disabilities.  I've searched in the message archive but couldn't find anything that addressed these concerns.

I am looking to solve two issues that some people who have low vision or use a screen reader have given me about the wiki:

1) Is there a way to get wiki pages to use the browsers default font size?

It seems that even if I make a very simple wiki page using the paragraph and header formatting, the resulting text will not resize when the default font size for the browser is changed.

2) Is there a way to display or get a link to the wiki without the left hand Groups.IO sidebar? or force focus to the first link in the wiki page?

When using a screen reader with the wiki the left-hand Groups.IO sidebar is displayed at the top of the page, so the user must tab through about 25 links before they come to the content of the wiki.

Any assistance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Chris

You've overlooked it.  Start at https://groups.io/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/customizing-settings-for-premium-and-enterprise-features/locating-the-feature-settings and follow the instructions carefully for Files.

Regarding Files: I am so frustrated!
Despite plowing through every menu several times, I haven't found any entry for Files. The only place that mentions Files is asking me how I want notification of activity--email, etc.

Lorraine Swerdloff

I started the group in late June, but despite the instructions below I'm sure I don't have files.
  • Log in to Groups.io and go to the group’s website.
  • In the left navigation menu on the group’s website, click the Files entry.
Note: If you do not see a Files entry, the Files feature is disabled for that group, members are not allowed to view files, or the group is a Basic group that was created after August 24, 2020.

Not a silly question Charlotte but not the right one eitjher I'm afraid. This was actually an attempt at a direct 1-to-1 email where the client software (AOL) had insisted on using the munged From address instead of the Reply-To address. It only became a groups.io question because that's where the smtp 510 error was generated - legitimately as it turns out.

Thanks Duane, I must be recalling some other system that does relay replies to munged addresses.

Headers include:
  • To: KFHS-members--at--groups.io
  • From: "Display Name via groups.io" <bbbbbb--eq--btinternet.com--at--groups.io>
  • Sender: KFHS-members--at--groups.io
  • Reply-To: KFHS-members@groups.io,bbbbbb--at--btinternet.com
It's evidently an AOL thing, the member with the problem is using AOL webmail and the emails go out through yahoo servers, so high risk all round there! AOL is ignoring the Reply-To header. So on to Plan G where I just say "go get a free gmail address" :-)

It is quite straightforward to post a message to your list every now and again.

“If you wish to reply to the sender off-list, rather than to the whole list, make sure that any = sign in the apparent email address of the sender is replaced by @”

A quick sampling of recent messages I have received on Groups.io suggests that the replacement of @ by = in senders’ email addresses seems to occur when the email provider is based in UK, such as btinternet and btopenworld, but this may not be a general rule.

Sorry, we were unable to deliver your message to the following address.

510: The group 'bbbbbb=btinternet.com' does not exist. You are subscribed to the following groups: KFHS-members@groups.io.

My observations on this:

  1. That email (which is what Groups.io sent out as the from address) should be forwarded to <bbbbbb@...>.
  2. '=' is a valid character in a group name, so how does groups.io decide whether to forward outwards or submit into a group?
  3. Maybe it's an AOL issue but I can't (yet?) see how.

Malcolm.

Yep, I do that often (w/ Acrobat Pro v.10.)
But you need software that “prints”  a document (say a Word doc) as a text-editable PDF, not just like scanning something into PDF format (which is just a full-page picture slapped on top of a blank page in a PDF.)  Or you need a scanner or app that converts to text (OCR - optical character recognition) before it outputs the PDF file.
There’s very expensive (Adobe) and very inexpensive ways to print to an editable PDF.

If you need more info/help, you can PM me.

GIO doesn't do any forwarding.  A Reply to Sender should go directly from the person replying to the original poster same as any other email they'd send, not via GIO.  When this error occurs, it's because the email client/service isn't properly observing the headers for From:, Reply-To:, etc.  The only solution I'm aware of is for the person to 'unmunge' the address properly before sending.  That would be bbbbbb--at--btinternet.com in this case.

Did we stop sending out system group-created emails? #groupcreation

Hi all,

I remember in the past getting an email from GIO telling me my group was ready, usually after a few hours from group creation.

I created one 2 days ago and I still haven't received anything, did we stop sending the emails out or something??

Cheers,
Christos

Thanks

Yes, it's done all the time.  It's a function of the program you use to create the file, so you'd need to learn how it's done in the one you use.  That's beyond the scope of this group.

Re: Possible Screen Reader problem with new page layout #website

Pamela Tatt

Thank you everyone for your insights.
We have now solved the problem.

After I told my friend of the comments and suggestion you had all made she spent some time exploring her screen.
She uses JAWS with Google Chrome.

She hadn't realised that Chrome was only using a half screen and when she found the button to expand it to Full Screen it, of course, included the Left Hand menu again.
So all is well, thanks to your suggestions.

Kind regards,

Thanks for that,  I thought I was being careful, but I probably outsmarted myself using heading or table navigation.  It works in chrome as well as edge.

It’s a link – it is labeled “Admin” (at least this is with Edge).

Another thing that helps me is, I don’t bother with zooming.  I press f11 for full screen.  This is the same on most browsers but I’m particularly using chrome for this.  When I do this I get things like an expanded my groups table with more information.  Still looking for the main menu though.  I can’t find the administrater panel for my list settings anywhere.

Best,

Erik

It only bans that email address, so if they use others, you'll have to deal with them.  If you have a Premium group, you can ban domains, but that probably wouldn't help for long either.  Spammers are persistent little bugs and often use 'innocent' domains for their garbage.  One thing about banning a domain: if you have legitimate members using it, they can continue using it, but no new members from that domain could join.  Since you can only ban a domain for a Premium group though, you can still Direct Add people if needed.
