I believe that's correct.  If the group "Reply To" default is "Sender", the client Reply would only go to the sender.  If the group default is "Group", the client Reply would go to the group.  If the group default is "Group and Sender", the client Reply would go to both.  It's also possible to remove the other option for the group when one is selected as the default by checking the "Remove Other Reply Options" box.

Have you read https://groups.io/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/customizing-group-settings/message-policy-settings to see how it all works?

Transfer from Yahoo group

Catherine Asaro

Hello. I am trying to find the transfer method to switch a yahoo group to a group here. I found the instructions from 2019, but they no longer appear to be valid. Can anyone help me with this? My apology of the updated information is posted somewhere; I couldn't find it. If you could direct me to that information, I would much appreciate it. I have several yahoo groups that i would like to transfer over.

Thank you for any help you can give.

Re: Reply and reply all configuration

Chris, yes I’m talking about the email client buttons. I believe most people respond to their emails using their email client buttons. So when one responds to a groups.io email with the email client buttons, they will not work as reply or reply all??? but instead both buttons will go to one choice determined by how group is configured? For example, to send this email, I hit reply, but instead of it going to you, it populated the “to” field with the entire group...so the “reply” forced a “reply all”.

I don’t understand why reply doesn’t go to sender and reply all doesn’t go to group, so people can reply to who they choose.

(The links at the bottom aren't a good work around, bc most people use their email client to reply and the bottom links don’t include the thread.)

Neither do I, or at best I'm not sure.

Then I looked a bit harder at your final sentence: Not the link option at the bottom of emails that start blank message.

I then concluded (rightly or wrongly) that you want your email client Reply / Reply All buttons (or those on your mail provider's web interface) to determine the destination of a reply... (either the original sender or the whole group) rather than use the links provided by Groups.io in the footer of each message.

If my conclusion is correct, then the answer quite simply is no. Your email client (or mail provider's mail interface) is an instruction to your mail provider, not to Groups.io.  Similarly using either the Reply Sender or Reply Group links in a message footer is an instruction to Groups.io, not to your mail provider.

FYI folks, I've posted an inquiry to beta on this. Just struggling to wrap my head around "resumed via web." I've never noticed any web feature that would allow someone to resume a vacated membership...especially in a Restricted group. Rejoin, yes.

Maybe there's something in the phone app that would allow this to happen.

The message search engine is based on keywords, not phrases. If you typed the above subject line in the search box, that's equivalent to

"able AND to AND add AND change AND cover AND photo AND to AND basic AND group"

You will have a lot more success with a search like "basic change cover." See also https://groups.io/helpcenter/membersmanual/1/working-with-group-messages/searching-for-messages-in-the-archive

I think the answer is yes, but I'd like to know for sure ahead of time.
The answer is "yes."

I'm about to start a new basic group for an existing Yahoo group whose founding owner has been unable to decide over the past few years whether to 'make the move.' He kept going back and forth but now, as of December 15th, he has no choice. He either has to fish or cut bait. He's decided to fish!
Too bad the group didn't move a year ago...more features in Basic groups back then.

The cost of procrastination...

Re: Invites not working

Cal,

I am inviting from my groups.io log in, and my first attempt with
about 10 names worked fine. I’ve been able to add a few more. Not
sure why that process works sometimes and not others.
Can you explain more clearly what you try to do, and what you see, when the process does not work? So far our guesses have been all over the map because we're working with almost no information.

I do notice that when it works I get almost an immediate response that
the entries have been received/processed.
And when it doesn't... What do you notice?

One possibility is that sometimes your attempt to invite is being held pending approval by Groups.io. This happens whenever you've invited more than 20 addresses in the past 24 hours.
https://groups.io/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/inviting-people-to-join-a-group/inviting-more-than-20-people-at-a

If that's the case you should know it from a banner that is put on the Invite page when you click "Send Invitations". In this casethose invitations "haven't worked yet". They'll be released as soon as approved. Note the general advice is to Invite your entire list at once, so as to incur this delay only once. That's after inviting a few addresses of your own as tests to iron out your Invite message and gain familiarity with the process.

I have considered upgrading to Premium , but I’m not sure if that will
work. I’d give that a try if I could downgrade after getting the group
setup as I don’t think that we really need the enhanced features.
You can choose the Premium for one month plan, which downgrades automatically at the end of the month. It is designed for this exact situation (using Direct Add to bring in an initial list of members when forming a group).

Note: Direct Add is also subject to the approval requirement. So in that sense it won't work any faster.

My group are all seniors and some have a hard time with email in
general.
That's a good use case for Direct Add over Invite. I do the Premium for one month in my PTA group to bring in new parents each year at registration - it is far easier for me than herding them all through the Invite, Request Membership, or +subscribe processes.

You can set up your group that way, if you choose.
In Admin, Settings, Message Policies, you can choose that setting in Reply to.

See https://groups.io/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/customizing-group-settings/message-policy-settings?single=true

See this about in the Members manual about replying by email:
https://groups.io/helpcenter/membersmanual/1/working-with-group-messages/using-email-to-send-or-reply-to?single=true

I wouldn't set it up that way myself. Members would complain about too much email, I think. Perhaps someone else can say why it is a good thing.

Groups.io is an email-based system at its core (ref: https://groups.io/static/why). Those who instead prefer a web forum or blog can readily do that on their own site using a variety of software packages (ref: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Internet_forum_software).

What you'll see is a function of the pixel size of the screen. In portrait mode, the bottom menu (About, Features, etc.) changes to a More button at some point.  In some cases, if you go to the site while in landscape mode, you'll have the regular text.  It switches when you go to portrait, but will be remembered if you go back to landscape.

There does seem to be a bug in portrait mode where the > (next page) button gets hidden behind the lower menu. You should probably report that on beta.

BTW, I'm sort of guessing at some of this.  I don't use a phone or tablet, but can simulate a lot (all?) of it by changing the browser window size on my desktop.

I have had similar problems on my iPad. I think "missing content in Portrait mode is "known" iOS behavior.  I prefer portrait mode so I can use two thumbs to type. Apparently those of us who prefer portrait mode are in the minority. So in order to see everything, the iPad needs to be turned to landscape mode to "find it". Then it somehow remembers the missing content so that it will be displayed in the future while in Portrait mode.
IDK, but maybe that applies to iPhones as well. Glad the newer model or newer iOS was able to see all the content. Gives me hope when I upgrade.

Re: Web-only #access #email

I am wrapping my head around this one. I too, don't see anyway to force a web only reply.

Even if it were possible, members could email new posts to the group by inserting your group's email address in the "TO" field. You would end up with new posts as replys to already posted topics.

I do know of a service that does require members to log in to post. It's called Group Works.

They work closely with hobby clubs that need to keep all content "closed and private".

Members receive an email digest of the topics posted but they receive no content. They are forced to log into the website in order to read the post and reply.
It offers a forum, calendar and direct add and removal of members. There's a file area for newsletters and other content. Support is outstanding. They are good at hand holding every step of the way.

Re: Changing Email Address /Ownership

Sandi D. <sandi.asgtechie@...>

Hi Maria,
I have always done it the same way as Michael describes. I feel it gives me more control. Instead of wondering if the change will "go through OK" on the system side of things.
I know immediately that I can get in as an owner under both emails which is a lifesaver in event that one account were to compromised or lock me out.
I usually also join under a third account as a member and set that to digest. It lets me monitor what my members see on their digest.

Re: Why is it

Stan,

Why is it that I get the first post of a thread in this group but do
not get any of the other responses.
In /this/ group, GroupManagersForum, your subscription (Advanced Preferences tab) is set to:

| Message Selection
|
| Following Only
| Only the messages in topics or hashtags the member has chosen to
| follow are emailed to them, according to their Email Delivery
| selection.
|
| First Message Also
| In addition to the topics and hashtags the member has selected to
| follow, the first message of every new topic is also emailed to them.

To see the replies in a topic of interest, click the "Follow This Topic" link in the message footer. Groups.io will send you the replies to date, and then any further replies in this topic.

Or, change your Message Selection to All Messages and receive them all.

BTW, I just tested it to see what the footer looks like and it says this:

Every message in topics or hashtags you are following is emailed to you.
The first message of every new topic is also emailed to you.
You automatically follow any topics you start or reply to.

You may have set your subscription up that way. Or it is the default in your group.

Go to Subscriptions in the email footer or on the group homepage. Scroll down to Advanced Preferences. Click on the arrow on the far right. You will see other options.
For more info, see https://groups.io/helpcenter/membersmanual/1/controlling-your-email-subscription-preferences/advanced-preferences

You may not like it, but I have one group set up with this as the default. Many of my group members like it. As owner / moderator, it doesn't work for me though. Easy to change.
