Group ownership

Nivard Ovington

I think I know the answer to this but will ask anyway

Can we find out who a list owner is for any given group?
(free groups in this case)

The situation I believe has happened is a group owner has passed away and messages are not being passed to the groups in question (possibly first time posts by a moderated new poster) and the group owner is not answering any messages

I presume they did not have a joint owner or moderator in place so the ships are rudderless as it were

Can anything be done?

I suspect not from previous conversations

I'm not sure about the point you are making; perhaps I have missed something. What is displayed following a keyword search and what is displayed following a trawl through the alphabetical list of groups will differ, depending on the keywords used and exactly where they are in the Group Description; this is even true of the GMF! It would appear to be a feature of how Groups.io presents the results of any keyword search rather than any sort of fault or bug.

How do I get to the second (and subsequent) page on a phone?
This often matters so I will ask! What phone? What operating system?

Hi Maureen,
I do the same as Bruce described with one of my grandfathered basic groups with a Wiki. Initially I linked the YT videos to a PDF uploaded to our files. But found it easier to insert links into the Wiki instead of editing/replacing the PDF.

If you don't have either Files or Wiki in your group, you could put the link to your YT channel into a pinned message and they could either subscribe or search for the ones they want to see.
There are a ton of "free" website and blog services. You can use either to host the links to your YT videos and link that website or blog in a pinned GIO post.

If not true, how would a GIO subscriber directly view an mp4 file on GIO?"

Yes, that is correct. If a GIO subscriber were viewing messages on the web, the MP4 attachment would appear as a small icon. If the user clicked it, he would be presented with a File-->Save dialog. After selecting a folder (subdirectory) and file name, the file would be saved and could be selected and played.

There are only a few web browser add-ins for specific file types: Acrobat Reader is one that comes to mind. All other file types are downloaded.

I'm guessing you understood that already and just wanted confirmation.

I'm not sure that that is significant or indicative of a problem. Using the group I moderate as an example go to this page (from the alphabetical list of groups) and scroll down to find wireless-set-no-19. Below that is part of the Group Description. However, if the same group is found by the use of a keyword search the entry is as shown here. This does not show the same bit of Group Description as the entry above, and IMHO should not necessarily be expected to; what it does show is a list of the keywords via which the group may be found.

Now a bit of trickery; go to the group's home page (click on the group name to get there) and find the keywords. The description is not cluttered with keywords woven into the text; the result would be horrible, but they are there and they will be revealed. Want a clue? Not all white space is white space.

So keywords can be included where a search will find them without their having to be included in the description text. The fact that the description is not itself visible following a search is, IMHO, neither here nor there; what matters is that the search terms work to help someone find the group.

Somehow the formatting has restricted the automatic blurb in the list of groups.
I searched for loneliness.

Everything in your group's description from the "Getting Started" and below should be moved to the group guidelines section, and at the most have a link to it in the description, that will drastically shorten the scrolling needed.
Having just had another look at the group's Home Page I see that it has been seriously edited to reduce the quantity of "material that should be elsewhere" and I must say that it looks much better for it.

If I was going to be picky I might suggest that it is still one font size too big; in conjunction with the bold at the top it is still a bit "in your face" but overall I think it is greatly improved. It would be interesting to find out what those who thought it was un user - friendly think of it now.

To get a browser to play a video, it usually has to be wrapped in a element with an autoplay attribute. Groups.io not treat videos in any special fashion -- a file is a file.

If this is something you want, it would probably best be implemented via a separate tab on the left-side menu bar.

Regards,
Bruce

P.S. In older days, Shockwave Flash videos used to play automatically, via a browser plugin. This is not supported in modern browsers.

I believe that would depend on how the browser handles specific file types. For example, most have a default to open PDF files in the browser window. File types can be set to open in the browser window, download to the local drive, or ask which application to use.

However, per a reply from Mark, there can only be one payor per group. The system won't go through a list trying to get a payment. If the person making the payments quits, you'd need to make yourself the payor to continue. https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/27017 Keep in mind that the CC is part of the person's site account, so would be used for any groups they pay for.

Here's an example. I am the owner of the group below. You can see that someone else is listed under Payment.

Yes and yes.

Payment method question

Cal

I am owner of a number of groups. The responsibility for paying premium fees for different groups lies with different people, with their own credit cards.
How would this work?
- Does each group have its own payment method?
- If I make them a moderator and give them billing privileges, will they be able to put their own credit credit in as the payment method for a given group, without it affecting my other groups?

Thanks, Duane. Users have never been allowed to edit a message. I'm the only mod and owner.

I will follow your advice and look at the activity log.

Has the message been edited? The original poster of a message can edit a message, if allowed by group settings. As part of that, any attachments can be removed. A mod/owner can always edit one. You could also try looking through the Activity Log for clues.

Thanks for the thought, Frances, but there wasn't a hashtag used. We only have a few hashtags. They are rarely used and none have expirations.
