Deleting Messages
Beth Minahan
We just discovered that the originator of our groups.io group, when we migrated from Yahoo to the new platform, did not check the all the privacy boxes ... and our messages can pop up on a google search...I've changed the settings and it appears all new messages are secure and not "google-able", but older ones still pop up. I have figured out that when I delete old messages (those before the tighter privacy settings) they are no longer found on a google search.
It appears you cannot bulk delete messages. Even though it's a small group, it's been around for years (it started on Yahoo), so there are thousands of messages. I'd be at my desk deleting for a week.
Sooo... I'm guessing my only choice is to delete the group? And that will delete all the messages?
I'm looking for a work-around, SO, here's my main question:
If I...
1) create a new group, with the strictest privacy, and
2) migrate the members and messages from my current group to the new group, and
3) THEN delete the old group...
Will all those messages (now in the new group) be protected because the privacy settings were strict before they were uploaded? So far, that's the only solution that comes to mind.
Beth

Editing a database
#database
We've had a couple of members attempting, at different times, to add, amend or delete their entry in a database and they can't! I’m sure this feature used to exist (we’re a Basic group and have been subscribed to Groups io for over two years). They can, as shown below make a row Visible, Add a row, View a row, import rows and Export a table but not Edit or Delete a row. Permissions Members can view, moderators can create tables Who can view and modify group databases How do I/we resolve this as it makes more work for Owners and Moderators! -- Peter

Re: New group owner
Debbie,
You could try emailing support@groups.io and give them a short explanation (like your OP post) and ask them if they could give you some kind of hint, maybe give you the (full or partially-masked) email addy prefix without the domain, that should trigger your memory and then you'd know which address you used. If you do email them, I'd also include a link to this GMF thread, plus also any pertinent group info (that only the owner would know) to help "ensure" you are who you say you are as far as that group is concerned. As a belated advice on avoiding similar things to this, when using a different/special/etc email account for something like this, always email yourself with the pertinent info and store it somewhere, or setup email forwarding so messages to that account are forwarded/CC'ed to your main email account; also use email names which reflect the group so it can be easier to trigger your memory if needed. Cheers, Christos

Re: User name
jthomasodonnell,
I would like to populate all the member User Name fields ... But, ICorrect. The User Name field comes from the member's account, and is the same across all of that person's group memberships. Only the member can set it. I am populating all the member Display Name fields with first name andNo. Groups.io doesn't have a way to record First and Last names separately, and doesn't attempt to parse what you put into the field. So what you get is an alphabetic sort based on the whole field. Salvatore,
I don't see the FILE section on the left of my groupThat group was created after August 24th of this year, so if it is on the Basic (free) plan your only option would be to upgrade to Premium. If the group is already on a Premium or Enterprise plan then what Peter said applies: check the Features panel in the group's Settings page. I am a new owner of a new group. I am populating all the member Display Name fields with first name and last name. I would like to populate all the member User Name fields with last name first name so that I can sort the members by last name. But, I don't have that right. I am trying to avoid changing the Display Name field to a Last Name, First Name format. Is there a better way to get an alpha sort of members? Thanks

While I have a Yahoo Mail account, I stopped using it years ago except to log in to Groups. I'd had it for Yahoo Messenger also. I'll kill it after groups are gone; all I ever get on it is stale new stories from Yahoo that I have read on other sites 2 days before.

I make no claims to being an expert on every browser but the above certainly works with Firefox. In addition, if I click on the "hamburger" at the right hand side of the browser tab one of the available options listed is "Logins and Passwords" so if you did save it in your browser then FF will list it and other browsers may have an equivalent capability. If you didn't save it in your browser than all bets are off... Chris

Re: New group owner
Debbie,
Problem is, I cannot remember the email account name. Is there a wayWhat Bruce & Frances said. You might not receive a copy of the message that you send to the +owner address. Unlike Yahoo Groups each group mod/owner has a control for what +owner emails they receive, and last I looked the default is "from members only" rather than "anyone". If you've actually forgotten the email address you created you may be out of luck. It would depend on which email service you used to create that address, and what "breadcrumbs" it may have left on your devices. For example, if you ever used that account to send yourself a test message at one of your individual accounts, perhaps that message is still in your email folders somewhere. Were you the only member of the group? If not, and you posted some test messages, perhaps someone else has a copy of one of those in their email folders. A message posted by you would show your email address. I created an email account for the owner, separate than my individualWhy did you think that was necessary or useful? Both Yahoo Groups and Groups.io allow a group to have multiple owners. Passing on ownership is as simple as changing a member or moderator's Role to "Owner". When you do that you remain an owner, unless you decide to demote yourself. In fact, it is common advice to immediately create a few more owners when you create a new group - just to head off problems like this. It is best if those are other individuals, but they can be other email addresses of your own.
