Lately we have a new one. Members replying to a thread with a message about another, second (and unrelated) thread. Example would be:

But it's a moderated group. We just edit the subject -- . Subject: Re: Best time to make airline reservations -- and approve the message.

While that policy ensures job security it does nothing for encouraging good behavior. Observe any animal trainer - behavior is conditioned by reward / punishment responses. As you describe it you are encouraging and training bad behavior.

The solution to your lazy member is quite simple - put them on moderation and DISAPPROVE NON-CONFORMING posts. They will quickly adjust and comply.

Thanks Jenny!  These emails can be text only or with attachments, they appear in my sent items.  But they never appear in the groups.io group.  Even days later....

I just got confirmation from my internet provider that the e-mails are leaving their system and being delivered to groups.io.  Just wondering where they are going?  I see nothing in the group activity log to show it was received.  The emails never appear in the group messages.

Perhaps this is similar to what you are experiencing; they are taking some time to get through the ether.

I am able to create messages and send them via the web, but this is inconvenient and I hope I can get the e-mailing to work again.

Thanks,

Hi Chris. My apologies I do not know what “nc” means and what do you mean by the activity log and how do you find it?

And are they flagged as "NC" or not, and what does your Activity log report? Answers to those questions might help point us in the right direction.

Ah; I'm not sure that providing links to attached photos is such a good idea; don't forget that attachments are at risk of automatic deletion when the storage space is full and new attachments start deleting old ones. In addition, attachments are often (always?) relevant only to the to post which they were attached and may not make any sense when separated from the post. The photos are not always sensibly named, so might be difficult to put into an index of any sort. I'm not saying it can't be done, just that it might not be useful.

An index works well with a "permanent" archive of pictures; can you describe your use case in a bit more detail?

If you first open that one photo, you should be able to Move it to another album. (see Tabs at bottom of the page: Download Edit Move Report This Photo )

I'm embarrassed  to ask this, but how do you remove one Photo from an Album? Believe me, I tried. I can delete the entire Album but regardless of where I looked I could not find a link to delete one Photo. I suppose I could create a temporary Album, move individual photos into it, then delete the Album.

You delete it by opening the photo, select Edit, then use the Delete button.  You also have the option of using Move to put it somewhere else when the photo is opened.

I made several new Albums with alpha numeric titles. 001 Title, 002 Title, 003 Title etc. When members enter the Photo Section, by default, they see the camera Albums on the first page. From there on they are on their own.

As simple as this "Fix" is, it is a big improvement. Some will be grateful, some may be annoyed.

Some may be annoyed by the following question. :)

In making the new Albums I inadvertently put the wrong Photo in one of them.

That may work, but such an approach is vulnerable to users having a sort order other than "Title ↑". There are 3 other sort orders available and they are an account - wide setting so for reasons that might perfectly legitimate, or perhaps completely accidental, users may not find albums that are "engineered" to be at the front of the pack actually at the front of the pack.

I hesitate to carry on beating the same drum but having an alphabetical index page set up with links to the relevant albums is the way around this; it matters not where the indivdual albums actually are, the links will find them.

An entire sub - group for "reference photographs" will work provided that the ability to upload photos is restricted to moderators, and probably to have it as an Announcement Group as well. However it would still be vulnerable to the choice of sort order which of course moderators cannot control. A second layer of photo albums would also have sort - order limitations, and would also require additional settings to prevent members using it rather than just moderators.

The idea of setting up an index page (which can be done
now) seems to attract little support; I just wish someone would tell me what is actually wrong with the idea. Yes; it requires work to set it up, but it works.

Hallo Chris,

I am interested in the process.

Do you have a sample we could have a look at?

Some time ago I tried to do this and could not work out how to make links from File or Database to, say, attachments in the Photos section.

OK,

Tony

Along with Bruce's suggestions, I recommend to my members that they switch from hotmail, yahoo, aol, or verizon (which have created all of the problems we've seen) to gmail or zoho.

From the wiki (italics added):

Don't mark group messages as spam, and routinely check your Spam folder for any group messages that may have been misdirected there. If you find any there promptly mark them as "not Spam". Do not delete them from the Spam folder, or allow them to be automatically deleted from there.

Also, if your email provider supports one or more of these actions:

  • Create a filter to direct all group messages to your inbox
  • Add groups.io and/or frequent poster's email addresses to your Address Book
  • Add groups.io to a "safe senders" list.
See https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/5115 for a full discussion.

ISP Marking Groups.io posts as Spam and causing members to be removed

David Tuma

What solutions are there for ISPs that mark a post as Spam causing Groups.io to remove the member until they reply to get back in again?

Sometimes ISPs are hard to work with.  The one my member is having a problem with is "Windstream.net"  I have two members using this ISP and both have had problems.  So far not with other ISPs.

And also, if you just want to work without a subgroup, make up your 20 albums and start their titles with a letter A or number 0. You can set these "A" or "0" reference albums on your different cameras to be moderated. Sort by name. Set up all personal albums to start with the letter P or something else. Then your camera reference albums will show up first ahead of the personal albums.

Like I just said, that won't work in groups.io , as the system automatically removes everything below the last unindented line before putting a message into a digest
