Question about synching members with a file of email addresses

I am considering using the technique mentioned in the Help here:

but am concerned about re-adding members who previously unsubscribed.  Every couple of weeks I do an export of our club's membership from our WordPress website's users database and import the appropriate fields into our MailChimp audience.  If someone unsubscribes from that list, MailChimp does not allow me to re-add them via the next import because of privacy laws. If those who previously unsubscribed want to re-subscribe, they have to do so via a form/link.

I just did a little test where I Direct Added a new regular member, logged in as that member and unsubscribed, then logged in as admin and Direct Added him again without a problem.  I then logged in as that regular member and completely deleted my GIO account.  Then I logged in as admin again and was still able to Direct Add his email address to our group. 

I would think that if a member unsubscribed, an owner should not be able to re-subscribe them.  But rather, it would be up to that person to initiate the re-subscription -- similar to what MailChimp does.  Yes, the person does get an email saying "If this was a mistake, please click on the following link and you will be immediately removed:" but if I unsubscribed from a group, I would not want to see that email each time the owner tried to add me back in again.

So I'm just wondering if this is a concern from a privacy standpoint and if not, how other owners are handing keeping their member lists in sync with other systems.

That being so, it probably means the name is already in use. Try something else.

Also get a "That group doesn’t exist" message.
I have no explanation for that. A screenshot would be helpful.

Thanks, Bruce, but that doesn’t work.
Deleted and retyped in Group Email Address and also into Message Formatting : Subject tag.
Also get a "That group doesn’t exist" message.

Other fields can be changed without problem.

Trying to edit the group email address in accordance with the handbook instructions but get a red warning message that "Cannot contain spaces, pluses, periods, or underscores." It doesn't. Either that or I get a message that the group doesn't exist.

I wonder if on the older PDFs the text was stored using the old
standard single-byte (ASCII) character sets, and in some newer PDFs
the text us stored as Unicode (multi-byte) characters?
PDF files are typically compressed (like zip files). Moreover, the characters are not always encoded as either ASCII or Unicode. So it typically takes some special purpose code to make the content searchable. Later versions of Windows have that built-in, earlier versions required a plug-in to explorer's search indexer.

So being unable to search content of a PDF file would not be a surprise, rather it would be a surprise to find one where the text content is searchable in plain text.

Yes, it is a little confusing. After you choose the file, and clicked on set the cover photo, it is done. Click on Home on the left and you will see the photo in the right place. Ignore the opportunity to set the photo - if you are happy with it.

Cover Photo #settings

Is there a way to change the cover photo? I have tried  Admin  >  Settings  >  Cover Photo.  I select the file and then, Set Cover Photo. The file name is next to the Choose File button but when I click on Set, nothing happens and the file name goes away. Is there another option that I am missing? I love elephants but would like something a bit more relevant to our group.

In a group I help moderate, any post with an attachment is moderated.

Moderators can announce that any resending of an attachment will cause the moderator to reject the post and send it back to the writer.

After a few times, those with the habit of reposting attachments will stop, because their posts won't go through if rejected.

It's a little more work for the moderators at first but it will teach a lesson.

Thanks...I'd considered Duane's suggestion...just wondered...more out of knowing better how this all works...none of our folks go online to look at messages...we're a bit older.

Beth, what Duane said, off-list email using Reply-All would be the best -and safest- solution for this.

IF your group has Subgroups enabled though, there's another alternative, if you want to keep the exchanges archived within your group, and also allow folks to use the group's online posting system; create a private subgroup, add only the folks needed for the discussion, and talk away within that group only.

You could try, but if they go to the group online, they'd see the entire topic.  There's also nothing to keep them from changing it back, either online or via email.  If it were me, I'd just use email amongst those involved and keep it off the group.

Delivery options #members

All members of a small group that I administer get individual emails. We don't send many messages. Several of us want to discuss an award for one long standing member who is in the group. Can I change that persons mail delivery options from "individual emails" to "no emails" for a brief period of time without them knowing so that we can talk about an award?

Lyn,

You can set your group so that private replies are enabled via a button so named at the bottom righthand corner of a blank reply form at your group's online site. That button toggles the 'rpivate reply' option on or off.

Another option would be to enable your group's online directory. This allow participating members who have opted-in to show their name in that Directory to email one another.

Failng the above, your member(s) may share email addresses with one another and then take their discussion off-list.

Some members want to take a discussion "off line" by emailing another member. Can they do that? As Administrator, I can easily send a message to an individual, but can members do this?

We have our groups set to moderate anything with an attachment so duplicates can be deleted before posting to the groups. we add a Mod note to anything we edit and I think people are slowly getting the message about trimming their posts. There are probably some who don't give a damn though.
