Searching for a word/phrase in a file/s in a folder #search

M Parker

My group has an organised structure within the Files section with all the entries being folders. Each folder has a hierarchical structure of sub-folders. It has been found that when searching for a particular word when one is in a sub-folder the result of the search shows all occurrences of the word within the whole of the Files section and not just within the subfolder.

Is there any way of limiting the search to the immediate folder rather than the entire Files structure please? I have looked in the Members Manual, section 14.2 on p50 and this does not resolve the issue.

Thanks
Margaret
Leeds, UK

The problem I have with the Groups.io search engine is that wherever I am in Files, the search box returns matches for the whole of Files.  I have not found a way to search so that it behaves as normal search engines, and only returns matches within the currently open folder and its sub-folders.

It's my understanding that those wouldn't have been deleted anyway since they would be grandfathered in.  Any group created before January 15 would always be able to create, delete, and use subgroups.  https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/23590

Yes, you’re right Duane – I got mixed up somehow in my previous reply (duh). I was thinking of Premium groups created after January 15 but before there was a 30-day trial option.

Thus the note I added to the Downgrading a Premium or Enterprise group topic in the Owners Manual.
Having said that, I've just noticed that I missed updating the note in the Overview topic under Using subgroups in the Owners Manual. Mea culpa! I'll update it in the next doc release.

I believe the discrepancy is the difference between downgrading and ending a trial period.  When downgrading, the subgroups are locked, but maintained, for a period of time in case it was a mistake, say an overlooked payment, before being deleted. (https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/23582)  When the trial ends, the subgroups are deleted immediately.  Note that these conditions would be for groups started after January 15. 2020.  Groups started before that would continue to have their subgroups, but lose the other Premium features.

NEW: New Group/Topic Reply To Setting: Reply To Topic Followers Only

I need some clarification on how this new option works.
It's pretty complicated. See https://beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/76544886 .  Here's what I think's going on, with the understanding that I haven't tested any of this.

Essentially, this setting forces the Advanced Preferences of both "Following Only" and "First Message Also" on all subscribers, except:
  • Anyone who initiates a topic (or has replied to it) automatically gets a "follow this topic" record (without having to do so manually), and
  • Even if you don't select it in the group settings, you can implement this behavior on an individual topic either by "Edit Topic" or via a #hashtag
Confused yet? Me too.  :-)

This kinda came out of left field, with no preliminary discussion in beta. I suspect an Enterprise group asked for it.

If a topic is set to "Reply To Topic Followers Only" replies to that topic appear in the group message archive or are hidden?
A very good question.

This is not a normal "reply-to" setting. A normal "Reply-to" changes fields in the outgoing email headers, such that in many cases they don't come back to the group at all. But that wouldn't work in this case, because the message must come back to groups.io in order to be routed to those who are following the topic.

On that basis it seems reasonable to assume that all posted messages still appear in the archive and only email delivery is affected (i.e.: the same way that the Advanced Preferences work). But again, I haven't tested it.

Can moderators view replies to topics set to "Reply To Topic Followers Only"?
There does not appear to be a moderator override. Moderators would be able to read messages online, but if they want to receive emails in a given topic, they would have to meet the same "following" criteria as anyone else. Or such is my understanding.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Re: Anyone else seeing delayed messages today?

My experience.  Afternoon for me in the UK though.  Messages did show up in groups, but did not arrive as emails.  After some time they started to arrive very quickly.  I think all the messages I made got where they needed to be in the end.

Thanks Bruce,
Strangely, the status changed just as I posted to the the forum. I suppose I'll have to be a bit more patient in future.
Great response, btw

Probably related to the delayed deliveries already being discussed in this thread.

An invitation is like any other email. If groups.io cannot deliver it on the first attempt, the invitation status will update to SENDING...and groups.io will continue to retry. Only after delivery is successful does the status change to SENT.

Typically, this occurs to due a 400-level error on the receiving end

Paste the message header into the analyzer at https://toolbox.googleapps.com/apps/messageheader/

That should tell you where it got hung up.

Yes. G.io wasn't working well with distribution to either Gmail or YahooMail this morning for a couple of hours, even though messages sent to groups would be registered on the group pages on the site.  Presumably other mail services were also delayed.
