Re: Customizing signup form, keep getting CORS error

Bruce Bowman

Jessica -- I assume you actually have the provided group number inserted in the form action query string (i.e.: instead of NUM)?

You also have duplicate id's defined for the email address input field. Not sure why that would break it, but...

Good luck,
Bruce

Re: problem with the way emails come through

Paul,

caplakes@yahoogroups.com on behalf of +++++++@gmail.com [caplakes]
<caplakes-noreply@yahoogroups.com>.
That does look a lot like the From address of a Yahoo Group member, as munged by both Yahoo Groups and a receiving email service.

Does this mean that 1) they are still sending to the yahoo address ...
That would be my bet. The footer of the message you received should tell the tale: is it a Yahoo Groups footer or a Groups.io footer?

Can one simply close down the Yahoo group altogether to force the
issue?
Yes and no.

You can delete the Yahoo Group if you're an owner of it (or maybe a mod with sufficient privileges). But that would eliminate its use as a "we've moved" billboard, which might be too high a price.

Since the October changes there is no more Access Control tab, which you previously could have used to set "Who can post?" to Moderators Only.

So that leave you with either deleting all the members of the Yahoo Group or setting their Posting Privileges to "Override - can't post messages". Either a somewhat tedious process if there are very many members. You can use the checkboxes and Actions menu in the Manage Members page to do either of the above in batches, but that may still be more tedious than you care for.

I requested no member use caplakes@yahoogroups after the switch but as
you know, one can never be 100% sure that it was done.
In a group of any size you can be almost certain that there won't be 100% compliance. The pattern I've seen in some of my Yahoo Group memberships (in groups that have since "moved on") is that some member will post to the (no longer moderated) Yahoo group, and this will produce a cascade of replies.

That leaves the mods (if they're paying attention) to try and contact those members off-list to have them re-post in the new home. And/or post a new "we've moved" notice to the Yahoo Group.

Thanks for getting back to me, Bruce!

I kept that in mind, but it still doesn't seem to be working.
Here's what I have (with the proper action link):
<div class="row py-2 justify-content-center">
                <div id="groupsio_embed_signup" class="col-12 col-lg-6  col-md-8" data-form-type="formoid">
                    <form action="https://groups.io/g/GROUP/signup?u=NUM" method="post" id="groupsio-embedded-subscribe-form" name="groupsio-embedded-subscribe-form" target="_blank" class="mbr-form form-with-styler">
                        <div id="groupsio_embed_signup_scroll">
                            <div class="form-group col" data-for="email">
                                <input type="email" value="" name="email" class="email" id="email" placeholder="email address" required="" class="form-control display-7" id="email">
                            </div>
                            <div style="position: absolute; left: -5000px;" aria-hidden="true"><input type="text" name="b_1949773347192752915" tabindex="-1" value=""></div>
                            <div class="col-auto input-group-btn">
                                <input type="submit" value="Subscribe" name="subscribe" id="groupsio-embedded-subscribe" class="btn btn-primary  display-4">
                            </div>
                        </div>
                    </form>
                </div>
            </div>
Is the structure of the divs throwing it off?

Thanks!

Re: Mute vs Follow #hashtags

Shal,
Thank you so much for this reply, it was very helpful.
Another related issue we are having is that members report they still receive email, even though they muted various hashtags. We have verified their accounts that hashtags were muted, and I am not sure how to proceed. Do you have any recommendations on how to troubleshoot this?

Thank you,
Avraham

Problems with polls #polls

Steve Hayes

I recently set up my first-ever poll, which I asked members of my group to
participate in.

One asked what password was being asked for when they tried to complete the
poll.

Most of the group members subscribed by e-mail, so probably do not have a
password.

My question is, how does one see the results of the poll? There is a menu
item on the web interface for a new poll, but there doesn't seem to be
anything for voting in or looking at the results of existing polls.

If you're the admin (or properly permitted moderator), you'll see everyone on both lists.  If the owner has made the Members List viewable for members, they'll see everyone on it.  Members (and non-permitted mods) will only see people in the Directory, if it's enabled, that have chosen to share a profile.

That means they can be seen by anyone on the internet, including the search engine crawlers, without being logged in.  See https://groups.io/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/creating-a-basic-group for more info on that setting.

Visibility Group

I have had some questions re; Visibility:
What exactly does this mean:
" publicly viewable messages" whether or not Group is listed in the Directory. Is this referring to say a Google Search? and your achieved message pops up on the google page?
Thanks

Sure, suggesting that we download the directory in CSV form and re-sort by lastname works, but it's an extra step that's not reasonable for rank-and-file members.

The result could be stored in a GIO database and updated as members join or refreshed as part of the rally. Or just saved as a file.

You may be omitting an expected input field. In particular, there's one that's hidden off-page (5000 pixels to the left).

Hope this helps,

Hey y'all!

I'm using the form action link (https://groups.io/g/GROUPNAME/signup?u=LONGNUMBER) for my own form that I built with Mobirise.

Thanks!

If you're using the Pending Subscription notice as a questionnaire, the emailed response should come back to the group +owner address and will be stored in that subscriber's "+owner messages" (see button found at the top of his member record).

If all you need is to be able to find that info, this may serve your purpose. If you need to collate all such subscriber's info so it's indexed and searchable and can be neatly presented you'll have to manually transfer it into a database table or an Excel spreadsheet or something like that.

Using the database method, is "membership roster" a database function that would automatically populate, and then I just have to add the additional fields?  Or do I have to re-enter every member into the database?
You could export the member list as a CSV file, which could subsequently be imported into a database table (or Excel). This would at least give you the data entries that already exist in the member list, without having to type them all in by hand.

See https://groups.io/helpcenter/ownersmanual/1/exporting-or-downloading-your-group-s-data/downloading-your-group-s-member-list and https://groups.io/helpcenter/membersmanual/1/working-with-databases/importing-a-json-or-csv-file

The columns in the destination database would need to be carefully defined to make this work cleanly. If you develop a functional template for this purpose, please share it with us.

Bruce

problem with the way emails come through

Paul Gohdes

I tried to find an explanation in Wiki for the following in the email address that I observe in several of our member’s posts (we transferred from Yahoo six or more months ago) but was unable to find an answer:  caplakes@... on behalf of +++++++@... [caplakes] <caplakes-no reply@....

Does this mean that 1) they are still sending to the yahoo address or 2) that some other explanation is responsible for the cross-over?  Can one simply close down the Yahoo group altogether to force the issue?  I requested no member use caplakes@yahoogroups after the switch but as you know, one can never be 100% sure that it was done.  Paul

Messages rate limit problem?

Nicolas Dechesne

hi,

One user in our group (https://lists.openembedded.org/g/main) has received the following error message:

We have received more than 40 messages in 30 minutes from you.

Some of our mailing lists are used for sending patches over email, and it's not uncommon to send large patch series like this.

I couldn't find any appropriate settings in the admin panel for that. Is possible to change these settings?

thanks!
