Re: Yahoo blocking groups io email? #email

Nic

Why this happens (all the [censored] time!)

A copy-and-paste from https://onlinespamsolutions.com/support-resources/issue-articles/40-issue-ip-addresses-from-gmail-yahoo-etc-are-getting-blocked  (There are other places on the internet that explain this recurring problem. This explanation was chosen at random from a selection of good choices).

Issue: IP Addresses From Gmail, Yahoo, Etc. Are Getting Blocked

The Problem: Spam filters appear to be blocking mail being sent from gmail, Yahoo Mail, Outlook.com, etc.  The error message sent back to the sender usually says something like this:

Why This Is Happening: Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook.com, etc. offer free email accounts to the public.  This is a magnet for spammers.  They sign up for free accounts or they hack into existing ones and then use those accounts to send spam. When this happens the sending mail servers usually get blacklisted.  This is because the specific mail server at Google, Yahoo, etc. is sending out so much spam that it gets noticed by one of the major internet blacklisting services and ends up on their published list of bad senders. Lots of companies check these blacklists (including us) and restrict mail accordingly.

You have done nothing to cause this, and neither has the person who sent the message (usually).  The sender simply had the unfortunate luck to have that particular message routed through a mail server that has been blacklisted.

Solutions:

Not all mail from Gmail, Yahoo, etc. is getting blocked, only mail passing through servers that are blacklisted.  Google, Yahoo, etc. use hundreds of mail servers, and at any given time the vast majority are clean.  When you send mail from Gmail/Yahoo/etc. you don't usually use the same outgoing mail server for every message.  Your message could be routed through one of many many mail servers.

That said, there are two options to consider if you are experiencing this issue:

Do nothing.  These issues usually resolve themselves quickly.  The folks at Google/Yahoo/etc. usually find the problem in a timely manner and work with the blacklisting organizations to have their IP addresses removed as soon as possible.

Whitelist the sending IP address in your spam account.  If you absolutely need all email from the blacklisted IP address to pass through the spam filter, you might have the ability to whitelist the specific sending IP address.  Be advised though that this should be a temporary measure because basically you would be allowing all mail from a known spam source to pass through the spam filter and into your inbox. (Whitelisting the sender's domain name or email address would not work in this case because the IP reputation check takes precedence over domain-level or account-level whitelisting.)

Note:  Keep in mind you are doing nothing wrong.  You shouldn't have to change your policies and put your mail server at risk just to accommodate a system that allows spammers.  This isn't really your problem, it's the mail provider's problem.  They should work to fix it, and you shouldn't have to accommodate them.

Note to Senders Getting Blocked:  This issue is not technically your fault (usually).  You're just using a service where this is bound to happen.  Free email services are a magnet for spammers and if you share a service with millions of other users, bad things can and do happen.  A long-term solution to this problem would be to get your own domain and host your email with a reputable provider. This option is not free but it is much more reliable.

Who pays for email ?

You don't actually have to change to another emailer, just don't use the web interface if thats where the problem is with aforementioned buttons

Use Thunderbird or another email client

I only ever go to the web interface to check spam

I still have all but one email accounts with various suppliers I have used over the last 20 years or so, Yahoo, BT, etc

Most I download to Thunderbird

(not aimed at you Chris by the way but to the OP)

On the face of it that would be the sensible thing to do, but it would seem (anecdotally anyway) that many or even most mail providers have their own way of making life difficult for their *paying* customers.
Or perhaps I am just over - sensitive to this possibility, having suffered from it in the last week.

I think that’s a bit facetious, changing email supplier is not a simple solution as anybody knows who tries. You still have to use the current supplier to forward emails to your new address, no supplier is perfect etc. etc. I have had email from Yahoo/BT for 40 years, yep, they have their faults but enough to change.

You shouldn't need to change anything.  I'd do a test event (and not invite the group) to verify.  After you create the event, hover over it on the calendar to see what time it's scheduled.  Hopefully it will show local time with UTC+2 below that.  Because different locations change the clocks (or not) on different dates, the TZ shown is for 'normal' time and should adjust what's displayed on the appropriate date.  If it doesn't, that would need to be reported as a bug.

Calendar and Timezone Issue #timezone #calendar

John Russell

Hi All,

My groups has been using ZOOM to schedule video meetings for some weeks, so I was very excited to see that I could now schedule a ZOOM meeting and set reminders using the Groups.io Calendar. But when I started to do this, I noticed that our timezone is still set to CET (UTC+1) for Austria. The clocks have gone forward and we now have CEST which is UTC+2 as our current timezone.

Does Groups.io update the timezones to Summer Time or Daylight Savings Time automatically?  Do I have to do that manually now? I have not scheduled the ZOOM meeting as I do not want to confuse my members by starting a ZOOM meeting at the wrong time. Using ZOOM is already quite tricky for some of them.

I don't even see CEST as an option in the Default User Settings (Admin -> Settings -> Default Sub Settings). Is this a bug that I should report in beta?

Regards
John Russell

NEW: (Re)launched the Zoom calendar integration.
When you use this feature you need to give Groups.io access to your Zoom account. Also the format of the text inserted into the calendar is incorrect. The meeting password shown is actually the last 4 digits of the meeting id and the password is  on a separate line below prefixed with %!(EXTRA string=.  I have raised this as an issue on beta.

It would help if you actually shared that IP Address with us! It would give us all the opportunity to watch out for it.

Re: Problem with an email address change

Linda,

However, she's not receiving any group mail. Does anybody know what
might be wrong?
One place to check is the Email Delivery History tab of her Membership page.

Ideally a recent message from the group will show in the Most Recent Successful Delivery panel. In this case her email service accepted the message, but likely put it someplace like a spam or junk folder (instead of her Inbox) and she hasn't noticed that yet.

If her new email address is rejecting group messages for some reason those will show under Recent Bounces.

If her new email service is delaying the delivery of messages to test whether Groups.io is a spam source that will most likely show up in the middle panel, Most Recent Unsuccessful Attempt. That panel is for "try again later" responses, as opposed to Bounces which are flat-out rejections.

(The latter is called greylisting, and I despise email services that persistently use it against a legit service like Groups.io.)

Re: #addmembers #subgroups #direct #addmembers #subgroups #direct

communications,

How do I add members of a parent group to a sub group?
...
What if I want to add a few of them, is there a quick way to do this?
In addition to what Duane said, another technique I've used is to put the members' addresses into the Direct Add page of the primary group, and check mark the desired subgroup(s) to add them to. You'll get a harmless error message for each of them because they are already in the primary group, but the subgroup adds will happen anyway.

They won't get any You've been added or Welcome notices for the primary group, but they will for the subgroup(s) you've added them too.

This is a useful technique if you have a large membership in the primary group and you use an external database or spreadsheet to manage the memberships. I find it far more convenient than trying to find and check mark them manually in the Subgroups page. All I have to do is use a select or sort in the external program to identify the specific members, then copy/paste or export their addresses.

Shal
To enhance communications, I recommend adding a Display Name to your profile.

INTERNAL: Work to investigate which technologies to use for the app.
BUGFIX: Misc improvements to formatting of the mobile website.
NEW: (Re)launched the Zoom calendar integration.
BUGFIX: The left chevron icon in the photo view was not vertically
aligned correctly.
BUGFIX: Paging backwards in the Emailed Photos photo viewer stopped

API: Fixed pagination bugs with /getevents endpoint.
CHANGE: Adjusted the size and alignment of the lines separating a
group's footer from the rest of the message footer information.

Did you verify her delivery choice on the Members List?  If it's correct, I'd try changing it to something else, save, then back to the original, and save again.  I've seen a couple of other glitches when someone changes their email address and this may be another one.

Problem with an email address change

Linda King

A member had to change her email within the group. She went through Account on the group home page. I've checked to be sure the change went through, and it did. The member's section has her listed with the new email address.

I've also checked the manual for what to do, and she says everything happened as stated in the manual.

However, she's not receiving any group mail. Does anybody know what might be wrong?

Thanks,
Linda

Yes, it's up to the member whether they want to share a profile.  BTW, they can have a different one for each group, including the photo.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'decent', but "For premium/enterprise groups on annual billing, we now send out a courtesy reminder two weeks before billing them.", https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/22484

Also... I recall months back there was talk of possibly moving to a system where member numbers would factor into how you're charged. Has anything been decided on that, or has there been any other pricing type changes decided on?
The new plan/pricing information went into effect on January 15.  As of now, Mark has removed the number of members from pricing consideration, but did remove the ability for Basic groups created after that date to have subgroups.

Re: Question on payment due and new pricing

Donald Hellen

It was hinted at but then tabled.

If we force groups to go to premium after a membership limit is
reached, there will be a mass exodus from this platform to other ones.
I doubt it will happen, but we shall have to wait and see.

The Directory and Member list are two distinct things.

In the Directory, members will only see those that have shared their profile, and then only when they share their own.

For the Members List, as of January 31, "CHANGE: A group that is not restricted can no longer have Members Visible set to Subscribers, unless it is a subgroup and the parent group is restricted. This is prevent email address harvesting."  https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/24023

Got it, thanks, Duane.

Reviewing my settings view, it doesn't seem possible for me as an Owner to set the sharing on for each member, they have to do that themselves, correct?

Best,

Glenn
