easy instructions for our members to create their groups.io account to view past messages

Lynn Richman

We "direct add" new members to our forum and they want to know how to easily create their groups.io account so they can view past messages.
Anyone already post step-by-step instructions or screen shots?
Thanks!

It's possible to upgrade your group for one month now and then to support the site.  It would revert to a basic group after that.  See https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/cost_for_one_month/72065440

The request in the wiki is an informal one, an attempt to help those using other languages.  There has been no announcement about adding translations to the site, though Mark (the owner) has stated that he does want it to happen some day.  It's been a low priority so far, but there are more and more groups that would prefer to use a language other than English, so a suggestion on the beta group may be needed.

As of now, yes.  There's a discussion on the beta group (over 2 years old) that you might want to contribute to, https://beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/6248558

There's also been some discussion on this group, but no one from GIO management monitors it, https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum/topic/6220815

If members are allowed to create events, then it would be best to moderate the hashtags for #cal-xxxx so you can make sure they haven't asked for RSVPs while the upgrade is in effect.  (Mine are already moderated to prevent 'abuse' of the calendar system.)

Finally, check to see if you have any database tables with columns of type Address...the availability of map view might tip someone off.
As far as I can tell, the map view is available on a basic group, but cannot be set as the default.  There's a button/link included in the address field for [Map], so can only be used for one address at a time.

I have a member that is an earthlink subscriber, who gets some of the mail sent to the groups.io group. Seems to be random for which works and doesn't.
I'd check the email delivery history for that member.  If there are no bounces showing, then the service isn't delivering the messages after accepting them.  If there are bounces, then it's the service not accepting them.  There are several email services that seem to randomly bounce emails from GIO.  So far, complaining customers haven't resolved it completely.

I just realized that I may not have been clear on my first reply, https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum/message/30471.  The correct order is:  You should send all of your invitations at once, there will be a short delay until they're approved if they go over the limit, then they will all be sent, possibly in batches.  A few people have reported that after the first delay, the next one may not be at the additional 20 limit, but there's nothing available from Mark about this.  Since it's done for spam prevention, the limit may move up as your batches are approved, but that's only a guess on my part.

How can I give a donation to groups.io?

Beate

Hi,

just beeing here for a short time I as admin really appreciate the
service given here.

Our mailinglist about the dog race Akita in Germany was founded March
1999. We moved several times (line somebody else discribed lataly)
from Ecircles to egroups to YahooGroups and now to groups.io.

As we only need an archive for our mails there ist no need to turn to
a paid account.

But I always give donations when I am using software which suits to
my needs.

Regards
Beate

Languages: Translation Help for Groups.io

Beate

Hi,

in the wiki I found that help is needed for translating.

I would like to help with German.

I am retired. Used to study Computer Science in 1968. First I worked
as a specialist for databases and a bit later the software tools
appearing on the software market.

Later on I specialised in technical writing, writing manuals and
later on online help for software which needs explaination (nearly
all does although marketing nowadays wants to make believe that
everything is self explaing ;-).

I wrote in German. Normally my texts were translated into different
languages English, French ... by native speakers.

I also took care of the quality management for the translated texts.
I am fluent in English and French.

Regards

As things stand... no. It might be worth a suggestion on beta.

This question becomes a bit more critical each day.
Groups.io demonstrated rather nicely how it copes with a massive increase in demand with the recent Yahoo Groups debacle. So I for one have no concerns on that score. Mark has also indicated in the past that the setup is financially sound, so another tick in the box. But there is also a significant benefit in Groups being based on long-established technologies - especially email. Call it it low-tech, call it old-school, whatever; it's tried, tested, ubiquitous and requires relatively few resources compared with all-singing, all-dancing media platforms.

Which leaves the pieces out of GIO's control; the Internet providers. Your minimum requirement is a reliable email provider; love 'em or hate 'em, the big providers such as GMail are probably the closest thing you'll get to a guaranteed service. As MKR says, there are no 100% guarantees, but there are choices you can make to improve your chances. And the evidence suggests that GIO is a darn good start...

Shelter in place will not affect Groups.IO at all. Mark can do (does?)
everything from his laptop. Literally, all he needs is an internet
connection, and issues with Groups.IO will be fixed.

All of his contractors work from home.

Is it possible to pay a lower fee for a storage increase of 1 or 2 GBytes ? #storage #files #pricing #settings #subscription

Gerry_OBrien <robotics@...>

Hi there,
As the Topic name says...
Is it possible to pay a lower fee (Lower than $220) for a storage increase of only 1 or 2 GBytes ?

We don't need 20 Gigs...and $220 is outside what we are willing to pay.
We only need 1 or 2 Gigs MAX.

Is this Price package set in stone?
or is there something that can be done here for us?

If not...then we will look into an offsite storage medium if that's the case. :(
Some help here would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,
Gerry

That's a very good question.

I suggest looking at the list of Premium features at the Pricing page (https://groups.io/static/pricing). If you refrain from using any of these extra functions it seems unlikely that your subscribers would notice. Mainly, this means don't Direct Add anybody, don't request any RSVPs for calendar events, nor set up a Stripe account for donations.

You will also see a few extra options available in your group Settings, leave them at their defaults.

Finally, check to see if you have any database tables with columns of type Address...the availability of map view might tip someone off.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

Sure. Go to Admin>Upgrade, click the "View/Change Plan" button, and select "Premium for One Month" on the resulting page.

After one month your group will automatically revert to Basic; at that point you will lose all Premium features. Please be advised that if you're doing this in order to create subgroups they will also be deleted when your payment runs out.

Bruce

Sarah, you haven't said how large your community is.
We've been  operating for over 20 years, starting at ecircles to egroups to yahoo and about 4 years ago to groups.io.
Since moving here we've grown from a running average of about 3200 to close to 3800.
There are far more features  available on groups.io than anywhere else, even in the free zone.

Re: Reliability / durability of groups.io service

No  one noted that there are no advertisers on  groups.io, no commercials  allowed.
On Nextdoor you become  subject to other, unwanted inputs.
Mark is a second generation programmer.  Both parents were  career professional programmers in an international firm.
Yahoo is a downright joke compared to even the most basic listserv.  It's been gutted.
While Mark may be the only "employee", as Duane stated, the entire operation is professionally managed and it's obvious that Mark has talent on tap as consultants that are more than equal to his  need for help.
Bug fixes are virtually immediate.
While we have had a couple of very short outages over the last couple of years, none were catastrophic to any group and to my knowledge, most were typically a result of tremendous growth exceeding the hardware capabilities.

mindspring is part of earthlink and I have had the same experience (but only recently, last week or two) - I found all the missing messages in the Earthlink "Known Spam" folder - I have marked them "not spam" and given feedback to earthlink on the situation.

I don't think Groups.io can do anything to mitigate, the problem is with earthlink, imo.
