WA -- Some browsers use a + sign in a mailto link as a substitute for a space for purposes of word spacing (instead of the usual %20 escape). I thought this behavior was restricted to quoted strings...didn't know it might apply to the email address, too.

Anyway, it sounds like the Safari browser/Apple Mail combo could be bad players in this respect. Try substituting %2B for the plus sign and see if that works...unlikely, but worth a try.

Failing all that -- and as Frances previously suggested -- your best bet may be to use the form button html found on your Admin>Promote page. This will not send a +subscribe email, but will instead take someone who is not already logged into groups.io* to your group's "join" page where they can confirm their desire to subscribe.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

*If the person happens to already be logged into groups.io the button has the disconcerting behavior of taking them to their default groups.io page instead of the join page.

I don't know what you mean "coding in admin, promote" what do you mean by that.

Yes, I did delete my original post because it would have been a duplicate. I didn't realize it would leave the orphan.

Re: Calendar setup - notifications/reminders #calendar

Thanks for the handy 3 point list!

You aslo filled in my knowledge; I didn't realize  multiple reminders were a thing.
Also, I was under the impression that reminders defaulted to on - I now see they don't!  Yay!

I'd LOVE to allow people to add calendar items - less work for us, BUT unless we can prevent them adding extra reminders and notifications it'll be tough.

If they "Add Event and Invite Group", and they are moderated, then would the calendar item show up in pending for moderation? .

('auto-reminder" - an oxymoron since reminders are automatic by definition - but this referred to my false belief that reminders were on by default!)

Re: Creating HTML Link for Subscription

When I type an email address with a plus (tested with +owner) with my iPhone, there is no problem.
I have iOS 13.3.1
I am using Mail, latest version.
So it is your coding, not a problem entering an email address with a plus sign.

Have you tried the coding in Admin, Promote?

Um... yes. Did you then delete your original query? It certainly seems to have disappeared, leaving a reply to it sitting there "orphaned".

Confusing for us ordinary mortals.

Creating HTML Link for Subscription

I posted this before but was sort of unclear because I did it too quickly. Here is my question.

I have a webpage where people can subscribe to my e-mail list. I create the HTML link with the mygroup+subscribe@groups.io format for the e-mail. However, when someone taps the link on an iPHone, the + is translated to a space and they cannot subscribe.

I have tried replacing it with + but that didn't work.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how I can encode the + symbol in HTML so it will work, or is there another way to create a subscribe message?

Invalid Email Address showing up in REPLY to message -- Is this a Software BUG?

SteveB001

I was just informed by a member of one group I am a member of that an old, now invalid email address (...@TheEasyWebSolution.com) , which had been used in my Yahoo Groups Account, is showing up as my current correct Groups.IO email address when a REPLYing to one of my postings in Groups.IO..

I checked my account settings and only see ONE email address address listed (my current correct email address that daily summaries are being successfully sent to).  I see no other email listed in my account. I do Not see a @TheEasyWebSolution.com email listed.

QUESTION...:
How can the invalid 'REPLY' email address be changed to my current correct email address?

After you click the Change Email button, groups.io will send an email to the new email address. You have to click on the link in that email and log in again to complete the change...if you don't, the account is not updated.

See https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Profile-and-Email-Address-and-Merging-Accounts%2C-Subscription#Changing-Your-Email-Address, steps 6 and 7.

I suggest you log out of groups.io and log back in under your previous email address. If you do that, I bet it will still work.

Bruce

Hi Duane

 Clicked on my name at top right in PSP-Graphic -Artists (Where I am an owner)

In the new window where it says e-mail address I inserted my new e-mail address.

After this neither address  got me into my groups,

I could join as a new member (except where I needed owner's approval (me)

and my co-owner fixed it for me in PSP-Graphic-Artists;

but I do need to find a way to regain ownership of Eager-Beavers@groups.io

and KetoNTreats@groups.io

Thanks for any help you can give me.

I just did a test.  Changing my email address did NOT lose ownership of a group.  Once I confirmed the new email address, all worked as before.  Can you list the steps you did?

If changing your email address caused you to lose ownership of a group, you'll need to report a bug.  You can either contact support@groups.io or post a message on the beta group.  Using the support address might be a little slower, but you can include details such as the original email address and the new one.

RSVP Management with Calendar #rsvp #events #calendar

Carina Bedor, cb event + design

Hello GMF,

We are CREM, Commercial Real Estate Marketers and we're excited to have joined groups.io.
We're fairly new to groups.io and desperately need help understanding calendar management. We've moved from an old school email listserve (impossible to keep updated) to a Linked Group (major fail), then a FB group (too hard to organize) and now groups.io. We're very happy with the way this system works except that we can't seem to get a handle on the calendar. Our group meets bi-monthly for a breakfast or happy hour roundup to discuss topics related to our work and industry.  That said, we can't seem to figure out how to send custom calendars invitations to select individuals in the group and how to check RSVP for calendar events.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!  We essentially want to move our event calendar invitations to this platform so that not one single organizer is having to mess with it from their personal Outlook/Gmail calendars.

Thanks,
CREM

Line breaks not recognized #markdown #bug

Mike S

If I put a single line break in a post, it won't reflect that line break in the display of that post.

While a blank line indicates a paragraph, a single newline should be reflected as a line break (<br/>). At least, that's how it works in Github:

Image Link: https://d.pr/i/FMHadM/o8UQCBxGp5

Image Link: https://d.pr/i/55vXqo/npKhVqCBnE

Examples below:

This is a line This is the next line And here's another line

It's worse with lists * Here's the first item in the list * And the next item * And the last item

It only works right with a blank line before the list

  • Like this
  • And this
  • And this

The raw text used to form the above:

This is a line
**This is the next line**
*And here's another line*

It's worse with lists
* Here's the first item in the list
* And the next item
* And the last item

It only works right with a blank line before the list

* Like this
* And this
* And this

Re: Plus symbol in link #subscription

Epicatt2

Website Admin,

Sometimes the 'number-1' key on the phone keypad includes punctuation marks, hyphens, the plus sign, etc., along with the numeral '1'.

Of course that depends on the brand and model of phone, but may be worth suggesting.

And a visit to a member's phone's user's manual may be in order to see how to type in a '+'sign.

Fingers X-ed!

If not now, is this on the roadmap?

even 1 longtext field would be AWESOME, the data really does not need to be structured or reportable (though that would be lovely).  We just need to look at a name and know a bit of context or background
WG:  If the Directory is enabled in Settings, this is already possible.

The Directory is an index of member profiles (as opposed to the Member List, see https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Directory-and-Members-List). Have each subscriber click on Subscription on the left-side menu bar, followed by the Group Profile button at the top of the resulting page, followed by the blue "Edit Group Profile" button. At this point she can add a photo, enter a bunch of free-form text/html...and do most of the stuff necessary to build some kind of a resume'.

Each subscriber will also have to "share" her profile. To do that, have her select "Other members of your group" from the Profile Privacy pull-down menu. Please note that a subscriber cannot see other people's profiles unless she shares her own.

When done, click the blue "Update Group Profile" button at the bottom of the page.

As the group Owner, you cannot enter any of this information for them. Each subscriber "owns" her profile and makes her own decisions as to how much she wants to share...or whether she wants to share anything at all. Given current internet privacy laws this approach is unlikely to be subject to revision.

Hope this helps,
Bruce

After our Yahoo Groups forum was transferred to Groups.io, there was a database imported called "Complete Phone Book".  We used this to keep details of our group members, however, it has disappeared a few months ago.  I have looked everywhere in the Admin section of the group and cannot find anything.

Has anyone had the same experience or know of some way I could recover this database?
Check your settings at Admin>Settings>Features>Database>Permissions.

If it says "Databases are disabled," select something else (and save your changes) and the missing database should reappear.
