Charles -- If you got a PG Offline download of the Yahoo group prior to 16DEC, rumor has it that can be uploaded to Wordpress or PHPBB...for a one-time fee.

See http://www.personalgroupware.com/

I have no similar suggestions regarding doing the same with the mbox files available via a Yahoo Privacy Dashboard or GIO export. Hopefully someone else can provide you with an option.

Re: What if Owner dies?

Charles Roberts

Tks Duane for the honest answer.  No need for me to read other's opinions on issue cause all will remain same until/unless mgt changes things.  Thats one thing did right was to provide a means for someone to take over when Owner dies.

The Great Attachment Purge

While we're talking about being over quota, here's a reminder that the great attachment purge is scheduled to occur tomorrow night (as I understand it).

Those with concerns about this should read the following thread:  https://beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/69516487#23979

Wordpress?

Charles Roberts

Hi All...
Just wondering.....has anybody switched a Yahoo or Gio group over to Wordpress or anything similar?
I took a paid Gio group to save my group from Yahoo but I will not be able to afford the ongoing cost.
Tks for any insight/foresight.

IIRC if it isn't set to that the Upload tab doesn't appear on members' screens anyway, so the storage allowance being used up seems the more likely explanation.

While it's somewhat related to Yahoo, the information at https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum/wiki/Moving-to-Groups.io has everything you should need to get your data in the proper format for importing.  I haven't heard of anyone else that's moved from BuddyPress, so you'd get to be a pioneer and work out the bumps.

Re: What is 'canny'? #question

ANGUS and MORAY List Owner

'AWFY CANNY' does not imply timidity at all. Canny means cautious, careful, prudent, astute, skilful, frugal, sparing, thrifty, steady and so on. Ca' canny means 'go carefully' or 'slow down'; not quite the same as 'take it easy'. Someone who is awfy canny is very careful indeed, isn't about to be spend money unwisely or be scammed or fooled or cheated or taken for a ride.

If I wanted to describe someone in Scots as timid, I would never use the word canny. I might say timmerous.

First, check your settings page, near the bottom in the features section, to make sure you have Files Permissions set to "Members can view and upload".  If you change it, don't forget to scroll down and Update Group.

If that setting is correct, check your group storage usage to make sure it's not full.  https://groups.io/g/[GroupName]/usage (replacing [GroupName] with the name of your group) will tell you that.

Re: Absentee Owner Succession feature

I think Bruce has got it just right with his suggestion in beta:

I suggest that the existing "Set Moderator Privileges" flag should not allow a Moderator to edit the Role field. Promoting/demoting people to/from Moderator or Owner strikes me as an Owner function.

Re: email group address for moderators/owners?

Denise Bradshaw

Not sure that's a great solution, as some members write to me in presumed confidence.

Re: email group address for moderators/owners?

Denise Bradshaw

I would find it very helpful to have an owner/moderater address, as did Yahoo.  When members have a problem, large or small, they just come to me.  Moderators could take some of the workload off me.

Uploading to files section

cmhenry

I've searched the messages and can't find anything on what I believe is quite simple...hopefully.
The first of our members to try to post something in our file section cannot.  She does have the 3 buttons at the top of the screen (New Folder, Upload File and Upload Directory) but when hits upload file a red circle with a line through it appears.  She has no issue sending out a message to the group, just uploading files.
I'm obviously  missing something in the member set up - please direct me.
Thank you!!

Migrating from other platforms #transfer

I'm looking at moving a group over that currently uses BuddyPress. I can export everything in a variety of formats. Is there a guide or information anywhere on how to do a generic posts import? Everything I see is specific to Yahoo.

Thanks bunches. Fast response.  I think info on suggested links will help me get there.

Re: Absentee Owner Succession feature

Shal,

Yes, I am sure Michael will bring it up when he is ready to do so. It´s not really a topic concerning my group(s) since I got this problem solved a long time ago as I wrote in one of my messages (29227) to the topic. But it seems to be an important issue because so many owners reported such troublesome experiences.

I do not understand your hint to he Guidelines. Have I violated them sometime or somewhere? Neither do I unserstand the allegations about itching and scratching. I live with animals but they are all fleafree

Interesting Paul - I recognised the word right away, but out of context. It's an old 'Scottish' word as HERE . And there is a modification CA CANNY .(take it easy) and AWFY CANNY (timid, unsure) ......and other derivatives. All in use today. Thought you might be interested.

Cheers

Re: Absentee Owner Succession feature

Victoria,

Michael brought up this topic writing: "Before making this suggestion
to beta, what do people think?" So I am wondering if the results of
this topic are being brought to beta for it seems an important one to
me.
Speaking for myself I intend to leave that up to Michael, as it is his topic.

But in fact anyone can open a topic in beta if they wish to raise this or another suggestion. Anyone who joins beta and follows its Guidelines, that is.

Re: Absentee Owner Succession feature

Paul,

I just checked YG & this is what my privileges look like. ... and I
was made a moderator by another moderator.
We never worried about becoming the "owner" because everything worked.
Right, because you have the privilege to "Add, remove, and change moderator privileges" you can appoint co-moderators who may eventually succeed you and appoint their own co-moderators. Just as that other moderator did with you.

So group continuity is reasonably assured.

The owner still shows on the list & I still can't modify her settings.
Correct.

Yahoo's methodology stopped short of providing that extra step: appointing a new owner. In some ways it would be nice to have that final bit of closure to a situation where a sole owner (or a group of co-owners) is known to be permanently out of the picture.

Can I get a page on which they all are listed?
Yes, but...

Go to your Members List, and select "Bouncing" from the Members drop-down. Clcik the checkboxes for the members you want to remove or use the checkbox beside Display Name to select all of them This checks the boxes for all the members on that page, but not those on any subsequent pages. How many that is depends on your personal Account setting that determines Items per Page, which is one of the choices under Preferences.

Now for the but... IMO the above is the wrong thing to do as it might remove members whose bouncing status is only temporary; the "blue" ones. (There are exceptions to that!) A look at your activity log will tell you just how often that sort of thing can happen.

Although it is tedious I check the Activity History for each one to see if they are in any way recently active (for some value of "recently") and for how long they have been bouncing as revealed by Email Delivery History.

Removing all the bouncing members in a single blow is in my view too coarse and brutal an approach.
