Post this request as a #suggestion to beta, I also think it can be a useful feature.

You can't use them as variables, you'd have to create an invite for each person.  On the Invite page, it shows the boilerplate that will be included, as you showed.  Those are filled in by the system, if you furnish the information as Name <email @ domain> without the spaces.  If you don't include the Name, it will say Hello, without it.  You can't change what's there, only add to it.

Where were they? The answer may help future people with a similar question.

I don't know for sure, but my suspicion is that the bracket "flags" are used by the code only when it is processing that invite notice, not others.

Re: Question is this legit?

Steve,

I'm concerned about this as well.  AND mainly our group's membership.

Sure, ANYONE can cut-n-paste a help file to 'show' they are from the AT, but without real legit evidence, I'm on-hold giving anything over to anyone without a proof of identity to an organization.  Too much spoofing and scamming around these days.  Our groups had 2793 members while on Yahoo.  I just can't hand over the email address so easily to a canned request that sort of looks legit, but may be a front.

Besides, not one single method I had tried connects to their IRC link.  I find that very odd.

Now, per the canned message, they will take the PGO archive too.  This on for certain had no exposed membership emails.  For most groups, PGO wasn't a choice they took back in Oct-Dec 2019.

Haudy,

I've tried all 3 of their IRC chat connections with 4 different computers.  None of them found the path and all timed-out error.

Unable to connect,
Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at chat.efnet.org:9090.

This site can’t be reached
chat.efnet.org refused to connect.
(Chrome)

This page can’t be displayed
Make sure the web address http://chat.efnet.org:9090 is correct.
(Both IE and Edge)

Thus, email was the only option to use.

#invitation Using each person's email/name within the custom invite? #invitation

Jessica Jorgenson

Hello!
So groups.io has the basic invitation:

Hello [Name],
You have been invited by [so-and-so] to join the Groups.io group [group].
If you have questions about this invitation, send them to [owner email].
To accept the invitation, please reply to this email, or you may accept the invitation on the website.
If you are not interested, or if [Invitee Email Address] is not your email address, please ignore this email.
Cheers,
The Groups.io Team

I would like to use the [Name] and [Invitee Email Address] in a custom welcome message. I tried sending an invite using the hard brackets but it was no bueno.
Any help?
Thanks!

Re: Anyone know how to access Yahoo Groups to delet my old groups or get my member list to move them over?

To the best of my knowledge, Yahoo has removed the ability to moderate posts. That is why I finally decided to delete the Yahoogroups I was owner of.

Best,

Follow-up:  In the topic that I replied to, both posts did eventually get indexed and show up in the search. The problem with a single post that never brings up its topic on a hashtag search persists...for now.

To be clear, the number next to the hashtag on the home page (and in the hashtag list) is the number of topics, not messages, associated with that hashtag. If you aren't seeing all the posts among your hashtag search hits, be sure to click the subject line -- or uncheck the "collapse topics" checkbox near the top -- to get them all to show up.

More to follow,

Steve -- I may end up eating these words.

If I do the same thing using New Topic from the web interface, it doesn't. Subsequent replies show up in a search, but not the message that created the hashtag.

Is this consistent with your own observations? I'm going to wait a few more hours and maybe test some other scenarios, but if the problem persists I'll report it in beta.

Brady,

When I saw your question yesterday I set my test group to Daily Summary and then posted a couple of new topics and made some replies to a number of existing topics. The Daily Summary that I received this morning sorted out the new topics and the new replies to existing topics the way it is supposed to. Sorry that I can't replicate your problem.

"private" messages sent from webpage not going through

Niman H

I just realized that messages sent from the webpage, off a post, do not go through to the member. Seems this has not been working since we moved the group over end of October (no wonder no one was replying!). We don't use it so often so hadn't realized. I tested it myself and no message came through to my personal account. I also tried taking off and leaving the word "private" which the system adds, but that didn't make a difference. I have received some of these "private" messages from fellow members from time to time so it can work, question is why it's not working for me from my mod address. I looked at the settings but didn't see anything that would matter.
Any suggestions? Or is this a bug?
(As a side note, a message sent from a pending post does go through - different mechanism?)
Thank you, Sally

The search indexer runs on a separate machine. It indexes keywords, hashtags, and updates the Message History table on your home page.

When Y!G imports were happening, this function could lag behind the import by as much as a day (ref: https://beta.groups.io/g/main/message/22697). Even now, if you post a message, the new message can take a little while to show up in a search. Not always, but often.

The once missing posts are now showing when searching via tag.
This is likely just a coincidence.

Re: strange people trying to join

Marina

Maybe I am becoming a little paranoid, but has anybody received strange joining requests on YG as well?
When I moved over to GIO, I locked my old YG groups and set up a special pending subscription notice informing applicants that we had moved here. My YG groups have been virtually "dead" for over a year now, apart from a strange flow of applications from Chinese addresses months ago, which I have reported here (https://groups.io/g/GroupManagersForum/message/16376).

However, today, out of the blue, one of the groups (an announcement group) has received a request from a strange address at protonmail.com.
The message in the mandatory field reads:
"Requesting to join. Thank you!!"
(Which is suspicious in itself, since the group's official language was Italian.)

I am not that tech-savvy and I don't know how to dig more details about the address, such as the IP or location. The Yahoo notification system does not display them (by the way, thank you, Mark, for making these details available to owners).
But maybe I am fussing over nothing.

It has, https://beta.groups.io/g/main/topic/66533746, but the OP never used the #suggestion hashtag, so you may want to post a new thread with the hashtag, and refer to the previous one with the missing one, and Mark may merge the two into one or let this new one in as well, I don't know.

Re: Anyone know how to access Yahoo Groups to delet my old groups or get my member list to move them over?

Haudy Kazemi

Leave the group open, set everyone to moderate all posts, and if someone tries to post, tell them you are not allowing more posting at the old group and they need to join the new group over at location X. Add a note to the group home page, and set the group web address to the web address of the new location. I've seen a few groups simply list the Groups.io email address. That's not as easy to use as clicking a web link that takes you directly to Groups.io where you can click Join (assuming you are already logged into Groups.io).
