When I set my own group profile to public, I can see the following when not logged in:

Photo
Display Name
User Name
Joined date
Location
Web site
Link to all messages by me
My "bio"

So, additional information that is visible are the date that you joined and a link to all messages posted by you (if such messages can be viewed by the public). And your chosen privacy setting is not visible.

* Will people be able to contact me if I make my profile public?
Only if you put your contact details in your "bio". You can put your e-mail address in the bio, and make it a hyperlink, if you want to.

* Can I see what my profile looks like to the public?
Yes. Make it public, and visit it using a different browser. The URL is: https://groups.io/g/<;groupname>/profile/@<profilename>

* Is there a way to search for public profiles?
Fortunately (or unfortunately) not. From the home page, you can search for groups, but not for people. If the group's messages are public, then members of the public can visit the group's messages and search for a person by name (but not by e-mail address or by profile name).

Re: Yahoo deleted our group

That was only on the group owner's page, so it shouldn't be an issue here. Groups.io has the same ability at the bottom of the settings page.

Unfortunately, there's no way to find out what happened and no way to report the problem. This seems to be typical of Yahoo - they really don't want their people involved. Users should just use the system and read the ads, and if it doesn't work, they really don't care. Just one more important reason why people seem to appreciate groups.io; support is real and can be reached when things go sideways.

Yahoo had an evil “delete this group” button in a location that was much too easy to access in error and was followed by a not terribly obvious <are you certain you want to delete this group> notice. Add a little distraction or cat on your keyboard and your group could go poof.

Hi~

I set up our group's RSS integration to work with our blog's RSS feed. But when we had a new post go out, it was not sent in the groups.io messages. Am I missing something?

Thank you!

They do not show up later, and they are not shown as bouncing.

Comcast (as well as Outlook) has an annoying habit of delaying emails from groups.io on a regular basis, but they usually show up in a day or so.  Do any of them ever show up for you?  Have you checked you email history on that group to see if they're being bounced?

Re: Sending Invite

While I understand the need for some automation here, why are there items in the boilerplate message that I cannot change?  As a paying member, I should be able to customize more of the message.  I do not care for the order of the boilerplate message (it does not flow properly to me) and I really hate the “Cheers, The "My Group" Team" signature.  Why should the signature be chosen for me?

Also, where does the [Name] information pull from when doing a batch of invitations if no name is included.  Does the invitation just come out with [Name]?

Thanks,
Chuck Neff

What is my "profile" exactly? If set to "public" how can I see what the public version looks like?

Benjamin Slade <benjamingslade@...>

When I go to:

   home -> myname -> Account -> Identity -> Account Profile -> Edit

I see a "Profile Privacy" setting which gives me the option to make my profile public.

I have the following questions about public profiles:

 • Is it only information on my "Account Profile" which is made public?
 • Will people be able to contact me if I make my profile public?
 • Can I see what my profile looks like to the public?
 • Is there a way to search for public profiles?

That may be the case for some, but certainly isn't for others.  A question such as "How do I check my transfer status?" is easily answered by searching/reading previous messages here, yet it still comes up regularly.  The messages (and Wiki pages) can even be read by the public, no membership in the group required, so it does get a it tiresome sometimes.

I do have to remind myself that I've been here for almost 5 years, so finding and understanding things seems 'easy' to me.  But I also realize that there have been a LOT of changes and updates in that time.  I've been able to 'grow' with the system, so didn't have to learn it all at once (and under pressure ;>)  When I started, there wasn't even any Files or Photos storage!

Duane, speaking for myself, there have been at least two times when the instructions had not been updated and nobody realized it until I posted here and said the instructions that were available didn’t work.

Hi,

I just transferred my Yahoo Owner Group to Groups.io. I am also a member of several other groups that also transferred over. On Groups.io both my Owner Group and the other groups have separate accounts, each with different sign-in information (Email Address & Password).

Previously on the Yahoo Group Home Page on the upper right, if I clicked on my name I had a choice of my different accounts and I could choose which one I wanted to go to see the groups in that account. I'm wondering if Groups.io has the same option? Having to sign-in and out of each account has been driving me crazy, and is very time consuming!
Janet

You can have more than one groups.io webpage open at once and each one signed in with its, in your case, unique account. For all groups except your owner group you would have to logout with your owner account then sign in with your account appropriate to that group. DOes that make sense?

I confirm that this Chrome/Vivaldi extension works:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/sessionbox-free-multi-log/megbklhjamjbcafknkgmokldgolkdfig?hl=en

It creates and stores separate sessions in the browser, which can be accessed by clicking the extension's icon. It looks like one can also keep two sessions open simultaneously in two tabs, and switch between them without having to log in and out all the time.

Does anyone know of other extensions that does this?

Samuel

"Option"; which option are you referring to?
The way I understand Sharon's message is that she was hoping for an option to turn off the notification that is sent to the owner or moderator.

This is, after all, what the original notification implies, i.e. that there is way to turn of those particular types of notifications.

In other words, she's not trying to turn off the fact that members get removed, or the fact that members get a notification when they are removed, but the notification telling her, as moderator, that a member had been removed for this specific reason.

Sharonb, you can't turn off notifications about members leaving unless you also turn off notifications about members joining. This is weird, IMO, but that's the way it currently is.

There is also no separate notification for members who were *removed*. There is only a notification for members who "leave", regardless of whether they left by their own choosing or left because they were removed by either Groups.io or by a moderator.

In addition, you can't turn off (or turn on) notifications for specific *reasons* of leaving. You can't choose not to receive notifications about members who left for this or that reason.

If you're a moderator (or owner), then you are forced to receive notifications about members leaving or members who have been removed, if you also want to receive notifications about members joining.

What you can do, is to use separate e-mail addresses for normal participation and for participation as a moderator/owner.

Re: transferring from yahoo best practices

CGG

I'm probably in that silent majority. I recently completed the transfer of a group with over 20 years of history. We'd had to migrate within Yahoogroups twice because were approaching the archive limit. All three groups, plus a couple of smaller ancillary groups, transferred with very few issues. Of my 800+ current subscribers, only three had some kind of database error, according to the report email, and needed to be added manually. The report indicated a problem with the databases, but as far as I can see they're intact. The only thing that didn't come over properly were the links, but since most of them have been dead for five years or more, that wasn't a problem!

I did notice that not all of the messages showed up in our archives immediately. The topic count grew over the course of a couple of days, and it now looks more or less correct. At least, I haven't seen any obvious holes in the history.

As for paranoia, anyone whose membership is pitching a fit over the move might want to state up front that Groups.io's privacy policy is much friendlier than Yahoo's, and since Groups isn't advertiser-driven, it's more likely to remain that way.

It happens quite a lot until members find out how to reduce the risk, if not eliminate it. And IMHO moderators need to know that it is happening.
