Re: Account [for upgrading to a premium group]

Frances

You must pay ahead of time or your site won't be moved.

2. How do I move my messages, photos, etc. to Groups.io?
You must subscribe to Premium for 1 year and use the Transfer Agent if you want the Groups.io transfer agent to move your Yahoo group for you.

3. How much does it cost for a premium account?
The cost is $110 USD per year for a Premium account. This allows you to use the groups.io transfer agent. You can change back to Basic after the year if you wish.

Shal,
I just have one group so when I clicked on upgrade it was ready to charge me for premium.  But I don't do it until transfer is set up, right? Or do I pay ahead of time?

Not in your account.

You enter your CC info when you upgrade the target group (to Premium
Yearly). Each Groups.io group must be upgraded separately, paying its
own fee.

See the Upgrade page (in the Admin list for the group) and click on the
View/Change Plan button.

Addendum:

I see that many of my TBird Add-Ons upgraded so when I fell back to  60.8.x, they were disabled.  This leads me to believe there's a conflict with one of my Add-Ons.  At this point, I'd strongly suggest starting TBird in Safe Mode or manually disabling your Add-Ons and birfucate enabling them.  I suspect you (like me) have a misbehaving Add-On.  ;)

Re: Can Email Messages and Chats be Filed in a Folder for Archiving #chats #archive #files #email

Frances

Laura, I don't know of anyway to put emails in a folder or organize by subject.

All messages are kept on the site in the Messages archive so they remain available. This is a bonus for committee work. There is a search engine as well.

The only way to easily organize them is by hashtags. As owner, you can preset some hashtags so that members can't create new ones. I tend to tidy up and add hashtags after the fact because you can actually find posts through the hashtags. And I merge messages after the "conversation" is over for future reference. Easy to do.

You could copy and paste some important posts in the wiki. There are files and databases. I use files for important documents - upload them.

And of course, you can create subgroups to focus discussions a bit.

Re: Question about fees

Don Grass

Before I transferred my group in 2018, I briefly thought about the money I was going to have to pay out of my own pocket. Yahoo had spoiled the owners of groups by offering large amounts of storage, and decent functionality for free. Then the Neo upgrade came along, and it was downhill from there for Yahoo Groups. When I finally came to the conclusion the Yahoo Groups platform was falling apart, and worried I could lose my group altogether, the only thing that was important to me was finding another place I could move my group too. It had to be someplace that offered what I had gotten to need on Yahoo, like archived posts, databases, photo albums, etc., but I didn’t find that to be an easy task. After I found out about Groups.io, and what it offered, I jumped on moving my group almost immediately. I knew I was going to be paying $10.00 a month for what I got for free before, but I realized those days of free are gone, and if I want to save my group from a certain demise I needed to pay. Thinking about the $10.00 per month I was going to be paying out, it hit me I can spend that much money easily going out for coffee in a week, and that surely would never break the bank for me. I thought myself what is more important to me, saving the group or coffee. It was a no brainer for me, the group won out. Members have offered to pay me to offset my personal costs, but I don’t really need the help, and I enjoy my group…It’s like a hobby. Now, if I was paying $200.00 per month for the Enterprise plan that would be a much different matter.

I’m debating about the donation thing. I funded our 4700-member-strong group (in existence for 10 years) out of my own pocket and people are randomly sending me PayPal payments to offset it. I also have a single nonprofit that has said that his group would bankroll the whole thing going forward.  I figure I’ll let the dust of the transfer settle and then I have a year to make up my mind what to do next.

Well, there are some advantages to the Premium plan which you might or might not find useful.
For example, you can track removed users, ban domains, track RSVPs for events, and take donations.

Hi Robert,

I went ahead and upgraded to Tbird 68.x and I'm able to now click on either Reply to Group or Reply To Sender.  I get a new window.  The quirky thing is that a blank tab is still created.  However, what's even crazier is that now, with Tbird 60.8.x, I get the same behavior as 68.x.  I suspect one of my Add-ons mucked things up.

You might consider starting TBird in Safe Mode.

I need to finish hacking on emulating my keyboard bindings before I can look into the above.  :p

Cheers,

Re: How to Effect a Transfer

No-one seems to have answered this, but Mark's Chrome app will do exactly what you want. I just downloaded the message archives from three Yahoo groups for a friend, each with over 60,000 messages.

The file format is plain text; a single file contains all your messages, with each message beginning with the word "From" and ending with blank lines.

If you want to see what this looks like, find the option that looks like "View Message Source" in whatever program you use to read emails, and this will show you the format used in the downloaded messages file. This is commonly known as Mbox, and it can be imported into various email programs.

Hope this helps!

Bill

I am not interested in down loading a list of members.  I want to down load all the email on the forum.
Is this a tool that will do that?  Are other tools available?
Thank you,

Thanks for the useful comments, Duane. I see now that the Groups.io "Reply to" links in the message footer do what they're supposed to do. The bug in TB 60.x is a separate issue and it's not really a problem given the other Reply features that are available.

I regularly use that trick of highlighting the text that I want included in my reply, but sometimes the text needs major surgery and that's when I start with the whole message in my reply and then pare it down to the bare bones.

Yes.

Perform a separate transfer for each Yahoo Group, selecting the appropriate Groups.io subgroup as the destination.

Your pre-paid upgrade to premium covers all the transfers into the primary group and its subgroups.

The one catch is that all members of a Groups.io subgroup must also be a member of the associated primary group. So as you do the transfers into subgroups, any addresses not already in the primary group will be automatically added to both the subgroup and primary group.

That would depend on how you have your group archives set.  If they're Public, as here on GMF, then you don't even need to be logged into the site to read them.  If they're Private, only logged in members can read them online.  Once you've set them to Private, you can't revert to Public.

icons disappearing from left side of screen menu

Marianne

New group and new owner here. I just figured out how to get into my profile (not group profile) by clicking on the privacy icon on the left side of the screen. I was able to put a picture on and change one of my privacy settings so people can see me in directory. When I tried to send a message to the rest of the group to tell them how to change that privacy setting, the "privacy" icon was gone from my left screen menu! At least one other member had a problem with an icon disappearing...not sure which one but it may have been the same. Please help!

Sure!  Everyone will need to be in the Main group.  When the Main transfer is done, everyone that gets transferred will get an email to that effect.  As each additional group is added as a subgroup (which will need to be set up before starting the transfer), they may get another email.  Anyone in one of the additional groups that isn't in the Main group will be added there when they're added to the subgroup.  Clear as mud?
