Re: time zone question

Patti,

Now I feel really bad, since many of the people in the group I just
transferred were newbies and I messed them up.
Don't fret about it - if they aren't using the group's web pages their Timezone setting doesn't really affect anything.

I know, this is a good reason to have an online account, but I know
you also know that many folks do not want to be bothered with another
password to remember.
No password required! On the Log In page choose "Email me a link to log in". Receive the message, click the link in it, and you're logged in.

Even though I do have a password for my Account, I find the emailed link a lot more convenient on my smartphone than trying to enter my (strong) password on a touchscreen.

Re: time zone question

Michael,

But the default should be that subscribers/members are in each group’s
Timezone,
That is the default.

Provided that you set it up in the Default Sub Settings tab of your group's Settings page /before/ those people joined your group - and if yours is the first group they joined.

Bruce good point. I set mine back so there will be a link and that is not bad. I don't want bouncing so I will tell my members about this.

Thanks

Duane thanks. I can't do that since my members like to send stationary with incredimail. It has to be set to no limit for the default settings or the stationary comes in broken.

Thanks

I agree that there should be a default, but I don't agree that it should be PST.  It should be UTC, because being the default tz is what UTC was created for: to be the standard.  It is used as the default in most scientific and astronomical uses, as well as referenced  IETF protocols such as NTP.

And this comes from someone who lives in PST and would find PST more convenient if it were only about me.

Michael,

You (and each member) can set any time zone you like for viewing your calendar at the bottom right.  There has to be some sort of default if nothing is chosen, so PST is as good as any.  I believe the calendar used to be tied to the group TZ setting, but that caused problems for some people, so now it's a separate setting for the calendar.  Basically another option to make the groups as flexible as possible.

Re: Not Receiving Pending Subscriber Notifications

Normally as the owner/moderator I see a pending approval request for new members but none appeared in this instance, maybe that's associated with sending an invite.
That's correct. If you invite someone to a restricted group, they are never put into pending status. The logic is that if you didn't want them to join, you wouldn't be sending them an invitation.
Find them in
Admin: Invite: Sent Invitations
They are listed as Sent or Accepted - I don’t know if they will be listed as Bounced if that happens...

Re: time zone question

Michael Pavan

My groups are all in the Eastern (US) Timezone.
The events all take place in the Eastern (US) Timezone.
However checking the Calendar with an email address of mine (that was transferred from YahooGroups as an email subscriber only and just today became a web access member) I find that events (real people gathering in person in real places) which all take place in the Eastern (US) Timezone are listed with Pacific Timezone times!
All of my groups were set up in the Eastern (US) Timezone for real people gathering in person in real places - to have Pacific Timezone foist on them by default is not appropriate. The fix as is requires all non-Pacific Timezone people to get web access (theoretically easy, but awkward for many if not most users) and make the correction(s).

This is a bad default.
I get that it makes sense to people from many timezones who are just gathering online (rather than in person) to have the time in their personal real time…

But the default should be that subscribers/members are in each group’s Timezone, rather than in the Pacific Timezone - which is Pacific Time chauvinist. ;-}
Or at least it should be a Group Owner setting to choose if a group is a Real Timezone or Virtual Timezone group!

No, it means when they subscribe to their first group they get set to
the Timezone in that group's Default Sub Settings. But only the first
group - after that they already have a set time zone, and the default
offered by other groups does not apply.

Now I feel really bad, since many of the people in the group I just transferred were newbies and I messed them up. I know, this is a good reason to have an online account, but I know you also know that many folks do not want to be bothered with another password to remember.

I am a veteran of the vi vs. Emacs flame wars of thirty years ago. (Emacs partisan). I look back with nostalgia. They were great fun. But not for everyone. Thin skins did not do so well.

Every group is different. As moderator or owner, you have more control of the way a group will grow and act than anyone else. You are not an agent of the government; you can allow or deny any person or post. Your only limitations are the Groups.io terms of service, which give you lots of room making your own judgements. Successful groups are lead by owners and moderators who pay attention to the needs and desires of their members.

There have been many examples in this thread of ways in which moderators have successfully managed their groups and many ideas that are worth trying. But no practice is guaranteed to work for any specific group. My advice is to exercise every bit of empathy you can muster to guide your members, but try to keep the group, not individuals, paramount. Be as serious or as frivolous as you like.

Re: photo albums

Richard,

I had the same problem with extra large photos, and was advised that
changing the Setting only affected to new ones and did not affect the
old ones.
That is correct. The resizing is applied as the photos are uploaded (or copied by the transfer agent); or received in Email or posted via New Topic or Reply on the group's web pages.

There is a to-do item for an in-place way to resize Photos already posted, but that hasn't been implemented.

Just understand that there's a tradeoff. Some mail servers will refuse to deliver emails over a certain size, so if you have subscribers that like to send huge emails you may begin to see more bounces.

Not nearly as much of a problem these days as it was in years past but it is something to look out for.

You might want to go to the Settings page, then select the Default Sub Settings at the top.  Scroll down to Max Attachment Size to see what it's set for, then change it to No Limit if that's what you'll plan to use for your group.  This won't help current members, but new members shouldn't need to change their limit for your group.

On your group Settings page, scroll down to Features, then to Photos, where you can set the Max Size In Photos Section.

I should add, our group is a closed group and the setting is set that new members require approval.

Unfortunately it appears that Subscription Approval Needed and Message
Approval Needed emails are not currently processed by Groups.io's
bounce-tracking mechanism. So they won't appear there.

I don't see an obvious reason why they shouldn't be, and it would help
in resolving this situation. Sounds like something you could drop into
the "suggestion box":

I also saw an issue along similar lines last week. I took a new member through the process of setting up a new account in Groups.io but no validation/activation email was received and not in spam etc. I requested resends but still nothing. The user didn't do anything further during the week, but I had sent him an invite from our groups.io group, which he did receive in his email when we checked yesterday. We followed the sent link and he immediatly had access to our group. Normally as the owner/moderator I see a pending approval request for new members but none appeared in this instance, maybe that's associated with sending an invite.
