I refer you to "The Treachery of Images" by Magritte. It is not an an image, it is the representation of an image. You will never get paint or ink by email, every image you get will have some representation that boils down to bits. Try opening a picture file with a text editor and you will see something similar. The editor is translating the bits into ASCII characters instead of the expected image viewer translating the same bits into a lovely picture of an exclamation mark. The bits are the same, it's just how you view them.
