You can do this in Settings -> Logging. The Menu column puts a button in your control panel which allows you to manually read whenever you want. The Startup column allows reading when GT starts up, and the Log column allows you to auto upload/log at the end of each contact. For you, that means you'd have a green button in Menu and Startup but not Log. Of course, you still need a mechanism for getting your contacts into QRZ.
