[GaRRHistory] G&F Augusta Yards
Troy Nolen
Gasometers completely disappeared from the landscape in America by the early 80's. They are a largely undocumented and unphotographed piece of history. I come across pictures of them via old railroad photos. Usually because they used coal to produce the gas, and most of them were near rail lines. Rendered obsolete by natural gas pipelines. Sent: Saturday, February 9, 2013 11:00 PM Subject: [GaRRHistory] G&F Augusta Yards Sanborn maps for Augusta (and several other GA cities and towns) can be found at: http://dlg.galileo.usg.edu/sanborn/ I have used them to locate some of the photos in Langley's "Georgia and Florida RR Album." For example, the floating gas tank or "gasometer" shown in the background on page 32 in 1948 and on page 38 in 1963 shows clearly on the Sanborn maps. Hope this helps.
