John Kovac and son can't do the wine tasting, but we should arrive in the Boise area in time for the Thursday night dinner.  Can pay in advance if desired.

Here's the current status of registration.

I have money from the following,
Moody
Ebener
Gable
Hanks
West
Krengel
Langsted
Kovac
Emmett
Shykula

I am waiting for payment from the following,
Dineen
Sias
Griffin
Meer

I need email addresses for the following so I can send a bill to them,
Rodriguez
Campbell
Longrigan
Noble

I am waiting to hear if additional people from CSI will attend.

I will check the online registration form for new updates on Tuesday.

Speakers so far are,
Nick
Jeff
Pete
Me

There are three door prizes so far. Rachel and I will pick up another door prize in two weeks and I will donate a fifth one.

Please register if you haven't yet. Check your spam folder for an email from PayPal and pay soon. Let me know if you would like to give a presentation. Let me know if you can donate a door prize. Also let me know if you plan to join us for Thursday dinner, but not go on the wine tasting tour. Line up designated drivers if you can find them. I can drive two more tasters.

Remember that Thursday's wine tasting tour is pay as you go ($5 per winery and $9 plus change for lunch buffet). Friday registration is $50 per person. I will bill for hydrogen soon, I am hoping to find a discount.

Please let me know if I have made an error in any of the above information. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone in Idaho is less than three weeks. The climate is mild here and you might need a jacket in the morning. It's dry, so our Midwestern visitors are in for a pleasant surprise.

Onwards and Upwards.
Remember, if it doesn't make 100,000 feet, it's just practice.

I think YouTube would be a good solution, although like Mark, I've never tried it myself.

Audio and the Slide Deck are often the limiting factors when doing live stuff like this.  It almost takes a full time person and a sound board to make this happen.

Re: GPSL Online

Hank Riley

Paul,

I'd suggest you ask Marty Griffin about doing that.  He puts most of the EOSS meetings on streaming video (and audio).  Recently I watched ballloon payload design presentations given by a group of undergrads at The University of Colorado.  That was also done  by EOSS and Marty.

These were all done using the ZOOM service.

I will say that the audio quality provided by the grade of service that Marty uses leaves something to be desired.  From my own experience the EOSS meetings have had acceptable audio; the university presentation most of the time did not.  It might have something to do with my DSL hookup, but I doubt it because a conventional phone hookup (POTS) I tried had the identical, at times unintelligible, audio as the web service delivery.

If something like this could be done for GPSL 2018 with adequate quality it would be tremendous.

If good, close miking could be employed with plain old video recording of the presentations, it would be worthwhile to do that in parallel with live streaming.  The recording should be fairly easy for many of us, but to date the only such comprehensive taping AND universal distribution (by Youtube) of any GPSL I'm aware of took place at GPSL 2016 in Granbury, Texas.

That was made possible by host Michael Willett and the prodigious effort of Mark Conner to actually run the camera for every session, cull and edit the videos, and post the results.

As Mark and I expected, without close miking of any of the presenters the audio was far from optimum.  If it would help this year, I would be happy to lend GPSL my wireless "lavalier" mike system which is far from pro grade, but has been used for local ham presentations with very good results.  Much better than using any built in mikes on a camera located six or more feet away from the presenter.  Ideally at least two wireless mikes can be employed with a mixer (or switcher at a minimum) for the best results (one handheld mike dedicated for questions; or a second lavalier mike for the transition to the next speaker; all three would be super).  Ideally such a mixer feed could be employed to feed a live stream as well.

The big advantage of a recording (as opposed to live streaming) is that the quality can be much better and "recipients" need not be around on a PC to get the live stream while it's happening.  I can't imagine anyone watching even the highest grade of streaming for hours straight all day long anyway.  However the same video on a DVD, or on Youtube or similar web based service, could be watched in segments at one's convenience very nicely.

I have found several archived video tapings of ham events (regional or national conferences) where the audio and video were done perfectly, so it can as has been done successfully.  It does require some planning and execution and pretty much is too much for the GPSL host to do by himself.

I would be willing to assist anyone with guidance who might want to undertake this kind of task for Paul and I think Mark would also.  Too bad Mark is not able to attend this year.

If possible I'd like to launch from my home in Valley NE, but the terrain along (and in) the Platte River is not favorable for recoveries due to trees and difficult access, and a short flight gives us a good chance of coming down in that area.  More than likely we will move the launch site to Kennard NE, which gives us a pretty good area all around to work with.

APRS will be on 144.36 MHz with call N9XTN-11 and 144.39 with N9XTN-12.  I will try to do a live Periscope on Twitter (@N9XTN) for our recovery.
