Re: 2019 GPSL Repeater Info
Looking at the forecast soundings for the launch time, it appears we'll have a short chase generally to the east. The stratospheric winds have not yet turned easterly and are pretty light, and the tropospheric winds are expected to also be light and generally from the west or southwest. Trend is for cloudy skies, temps around 70, and some chance of rain. 73 de Mark N9XTN

You may want to check the overlay feature out before the launch. It did not work for us last Saturday. Attached is screen print of the error.

Re: NOMADS GFS file changing June 12th
The GFS model will undergo physics upgrades at that time. The output formats should remain the same, but the directory structure will apparently change as per the notice. Here's what a current URL looks like: I assume the tail end would change from 0600/ to 06/00/ on the 12th. The 0.5 deg and 1.0 deg files should still be available, as there are many users. Those pulling the data from the https server (and perhaps other NOAA model data servers) will have to change their pulls in a turnkey fashion during the 12Z cycle. I don't know if any of the HABHUB crew is on this email list or not. Hopefully someone can get word to a contact there. 73 de Mark N9XTN

NOMADS GFS file changing June 12th
Jerry
Just to add some interest to the GPSL launch, it looks like the GFS forecast that everyone uses for prediction software is getting a major upgrade the Wednesday before. The announcement is shown below. I am a little confused on exactly what is happening to the existing files (0.5 and 1.0 degree) that most systems use. Since there is a new directory structure it would be nice if both systems could be up for a while but it doesn't sound like that is in the cards. The pessimist in me says we should all be prepared for none of the prediction software working Friday or Saturday. The best and most likely case is everyone will get the software converted over with a little down time on Wednesday. I plan on working on mine so it is ready but will be traveling on Wednesday so it might be interesting. If any of you have contacts at Hahhub or any of the other prediction systems it would be great to hear their plans. Mark Conner, if you have any insight it would be great to hear that as well. ----- Forwarded Message -----

GPSL travel plans and road closures
GPSLers, I'm not sure how many of you this will affect, but be aware there are several Interstate road closures along the Missouri River now in western Iowa due to flooding. I-29 is closed both to the north and south of Omaha, along with several US and state highway bridges over the Missouri. The I-80 bridge is open and very unlikely to close though, so the EOSS caravan shouldn't have any issues. :) Unfortunately my work schedule and limited days off will prevent me from taking part in the Wed-Fri activities this year. However, I am planning to travel to Pella Friday night and help launch and chase on Saturday with both RF and internet gear. 73 de Mark N9XTN

I would be happy to be a backup tracker for you. The tracker is a StratoTrack and it weighs 9 oz. There are four cords to connect it to the payload string. It's KD4STH-3 and transmits APRS at 144.390. Thanks

Paul, I'd be happy to have a stowaway. If it's light enough, I could use it as a second tracker on my little "drop" payload that I'll be releasing between 90-95000 feet. Otherwise, I could stick it in one of my two payload boxes as a second backup. Either is fine with me. Mike / KD2EAT

Flight Registration for GPSL 2019

I've been updating the website with attendee and flight information. So far there's only a couple of flights listed. If you're wanting a timeslot on 144.39, it's time to get your request in as we'll have to get that firmed up here very quickly. Also, as a former GPSL organizer, PLEASE cut Mike some slack and get registered ASAP so he can get logistics ironed out. *hint hint*. See you in a few!!!
