Re: Photos of past events

Thanks for the photos. I've included them in the 2018 gallery. I've had failures during other launches for sure, but the most spectacular ones seem to be in front of large groups of people. A few years ago in Hutch I was raising my balloon up on kite-string lanyards. Somehow things twisted just right and the lanyards friction-cut their way through my load line dropping the packages back to the ground and releasing the balloon towards the heavens. The second one that I had was a remotely-controlled cutdown device placed above the parachute. It utilized a 400MHz link from the capsule to command the cutdown. The good news is that I had the presence of mind to include a deadman's switch in the event that the controlling capsule died, we'd still get cut away. The bad news is that I inadvertently shorted my receive antenna directly to ground. When I was testing on the workbench everything was fine, however as soon as I put 30' of load line out between the balloon and the capsule, I unknowingly initiated a deadman's count-down. The capsules rose a couple thousand feet into the air before descending gracefully back a few miles away. Oh the adventures... 2005 and 2012 were in Omaha for the symposium, and launch sites were Treynor IA and Glenwood IA respectively. Mark

Here’s a link to six photos from 2018. Kind of a painful memory for my son and me - we drove from California to Idaho and had a line break just before launch, balloon went up with no payload and we didn’t have a spare balloon. It was cool to meet everyone, though, and we enjoyed the presentations.

OK, so I think 2005 was the room that started to rotate around on us then. Was that in Omaha? Zack

I'll dig up and see what I have. Here are two updates for you though. 2009 was Topeka and not 2005. For 2001 you can write down Manhattan Kansas.

Photos of past events
Zack Clobes W0ZC
I started a central photo gallery of past GPSL events. I've made it through my personal photo galleries but I have a lot of years that are completely missing. If anyone would like to share some of their photos to add to the gallery I'd love to fill in the gaps*. Also in related news, I want to capture the hosts and locations for each year's event to give credit where credit is due. My documentation isn't that great for some of the past seasons so if anyone knows who/where/when an event was had, pass it along please. * Please understand that this isn't intended to be an all-inclusive gallery of all photos. I don't have the hosting space nor the time to handle tens-of-thousands of photos. Instead I just want to capture a highlight reel for each year. We have a crack team of video analysts here in Missouri and they will know if there are any glitches.

No I haven't and don't know anyone who has. How would you test the camera to make sure there isn't a "glitch" in it delivering false images? It sounds like an interesting project.

Re: Life in the Stratosphere?

Has anyone in this group sent up a high speed video camera? I've been doing a study of high-speed UFOs captured on film and just completed a book on this subject. These objects move so fast that they can't be seen with the naked eye, yet when going through video frame-by-frame we are able to see craft moving at high rates of speed. So far, we've only been able to obtain video from the ground. Getting video from the stratosphere might shed more light on this subject - especially with a high-speed camera. If anyone has already done this and would like for us to analyze the video for craft please let me know. If not, perhaps this would be a good future project. Sincerely,

I tried something similar and wrote about it in my book on your space with the basic stamp. Essentially, I put together Petri dishes with agar that was hot enough to sterilize it. Then I used to serve out to lift the top of the petri dish once the balloon was about 50,000 ft. Before the balloon burst the petri dish was closed. For comparison, I would keep one petri dish on the ground and send one up in the balloon. After recovery, see if there's a difference in the bacteria you see in both of the Petri dishes.

We've been planning to do this. If you write to me off-list, I'll put you in touch with our team who have designed a box. Largely because of the sterility issues, we're trying micrometorites as our first cut before going on to life. Jayant

So now we are thinking about attempting to capture bacteria in the stratosphere. Has anyone done this? From what we seem to be able to find it has been done very seldom. We have access to a MD and a biochemist who are helping and we have read 4 or 5 papers from groups who have done it. From talking with the biochemist I kind of sense there are textbook solutions to some of the problems of ensuring sterility. Or dealing with the small amount of "life" we might find. Larry KJ6PBS

I have a feeling you didn't get my direct email. Just in case there's something going on on your end that you might not be aware of, mentioning it now here rather than waiting a long time.

Habhub Servers Downtime
Anthony Stirk
Evening all, Just a heads up we are moving the physical servers that host the Habhub platform this coming Thursday the 17th of November. All services will be affected and they will go offline from about 0900 UK time. We will do our best to get everything back up and working as fast as possible but the servers could be off for up to 12 hours. Anthony
