We're also interested in building a cheap, 2m
backup signal. I've attached the data sheets on a Motorola MC2833 (which
aren't being manufactured anymore, but you can still get them). Radio
Shack has a crystal that will put it in the 2m band (I forget where off the top
of my head) that they sell for about $1.
That's as far as I've gotten on the project - maybe
this summer.
