Rudder Pintles & Gudgeons: what do yours look like?

Shannon Rae <shannonrae.ca@...>

Hello!

First haul-out: (so exciting) just wanted to see what she was like & do a quick bottom paint (black!!)…will haul again once it’s a bit warmer, then I can plan for rudder work, and polish the hull, and work on thru-hulls (change the Groco SVs…)

What do you guys see here: are these waterline/underwaterline original gudgeons: they look small?!

And the pink: I see no zincs anywhere, so likely need one…and the nuts and likely the bolts should be replaced here?!

Do many of you have all bronze?!

Thanks!!

Shannon,

Best wishes on your first haul out & bottom paint.  I’ve attached a photo of my pintle/gudgeons.  I’m pretty sure they’re bronze …at least I’ve assumed that because of the greenish patina.

Cheers,
Ian

Gudgeon look right, and lower Pintle looks original. Upper pintle looks slightly undersized from original. I would replace the 4 stainless bolts and nuts with bronze. If you need a source for bronze nuts and bolts, McMaster-Carr has them and gets them to you fast.

Thanks for response. Will be posting photo's of my project soon. 1979 boat. Kind of a trainwreck. Bomar hatch probably leaking for years. Interior wood on starboard side shot. Other leaks in deck and cabin penetrations. Fuel tank has stopped leaking......it's finally empty? All original running rigging, rollers that don't roll, etc. Think the old Yanmar is OK. Taking the whole headliner down because  I have to. Doing that carefully but honestly I don't think I have the skills to put it back up. Previous owners reluctance to take the headliner down has caused Mucho damage. Can some people post pictures of 'Life after Headliner'? PS- Where is the electric bilge pump?? Under the diesel? Haven't removed steps and panel to the engine....last possibility. Gusher under cockpit storage needs rebuild and new hoses. Too short and all flexibility is gone. One GOOD news. Previous owner did nice NEW job on the hull and thru hulls .He stopped there. Gasket/packing around hatch plexiglass seems bad too. Hatch frame has been 'Gooped' years ago but the plywood square underneath it is crumbling. The frame itself must be leaking too. Would Bomar offer a rebuild kit for a hatch this old?

Good, thank you everyone, and…I thought the hull was beige, however it appears to be quite white!! Did not realize that this beige (scum?,  “yellowing”, “stains”?!) is a thing that can/should be removed…!!  It’s very cold and rainy here, luckily yesterday gave me the chance to investigate this on the hull! I will do more to it next haulout, this was more to ensure there was a bottom and it was sound! (and I wanted it black and yep, have black fenders & lines already, heh heh!!!)  I started with a few good boat cleaners (and toilet bowl cleaner: don’t leave it on long, and it gets rid of the stains!!)

Next is a warmer weather haul-out where I can do the

  1. fiberglass chips repair…
  1. have any of you done it, I don’t ever want my boat to look like a “hack job”…and not sure that I want to try and “grind out the chip and then to x,y,z…” well I have about 30 or 40 of them…am getting the local fibreglass shop to quote just because: do I snip the piece of fibreglass cloth the guy just put in the paper bag (and I got some pieces in my finger!) or….what….!!! it’s not like touch up paint…

Then the head (can’t wait to remove the smell!! 😉) removal and move the batteries and inverter there to stbd side to balance the “weighs more than me” outboard…Thanks to the Dawsons for their awesome article and I can even see the picture of what the holding tank area will look like, almost like a bilge space (horror movie footage during the removal…!!)

Inflatable kayak under the cockpit for my dinghy for now! (Thanks for all your reviews on what you have and Practical Sailor’s review on inflatable kayaks.)

(boom back on soon, waiting for the lines and then…splash and sail around for now!!!)

Thank you everyone for sharing!!!

Thank you!

Sincerely;

Shannon Rae

A project for next season.  Investigating a noise from the rudder when moving around on the mooring and seems like I will have to tackle this project.
The Gudgeons have ground down and need to be replaced.  They could possibly can be ground down and saved?  Appreciate any opinions.

Anyone have any photos and/or know what is behind the screws into the transom?

Thanks

Ahoy Scott— I offer my opinion, and I’m sure that there are competing ones. The issue as you describe seems to be confined to gudgeons, but perhaps the pintles are abraded as well. Removing the fittings from the hull strikes me as extreme, given that these were so overbuilt initially, and that is likely to create more problems than it solves. I suggest that unshipping the rudder, which is not a huge task, will allow investigation and remediation. My thought is that with a bit of abrasion on both parts, a cylindrical shim of bearing bronze or even just sacrificial brass could be inserted to remove the play in the system, which of course is damaging in and of itself.

Good luck

Gabriel

The upper pintle strap on my '85 was cracked.  I replaced all three.  West Coast Casting in Bradenton FL (I believe they are closed) made sand castings and poured new parts with thicker straps.  I then made new modified rudder cheeks ti accommodate the thicker straps.  I should have done the gudgeons at same time.

Our lower gudgeon was warn and slapping at the dock. I ordered nylon dry running insert bushings from McMaster-Carr which slip in and take up the slap and give an upper bearing surface. If needed they are cheap enough to replace when worn, but ours have lasted about 1400 miles so far and we will examine them at haul out. As the fittings are so over built, a file will flatten the upper surface, and if they are out of round inside and not too worn, a reamer can get it to a size, then order right size insert for the new id and the od of the pintle.

Hi Shannon,

I went through a fairly extensive haulout to restore my Flicka Dulcinea #302 and I wrote up the adventure in Flicka Friends Sept 2020 vol 70.  It describes minor and major fiberglass repair, blister repair, renewing rudder gudgeons, and much more.

Attached is a photo of our bushing in place. You can only see the line of the top flange below the pintle when you zoom in. I expect in the spring I will lift the rudder and if needed, replace the bushing. It has been in for 2 or 3 years, and has stopped the rudder slap at the dock which was enough to keep us awake onboard.image0.jpeg
