Looking for a FLICKA
Christopher Stevenson
Hello Flicka Fans:
I'm totally in love with the P.S. Flicka. I let one slip out of my hands just recently, and now searching for one. I'm located in So. California, but willing to buy and move one within a reasonable distance (Pacific N.W. to Mid-west). If you hear of one for sale..... PLEASE CONTACT ME. I'll keep checking the forum. Enjoy seeing all your fun chatter and modifications, etc. For now at least - I can be first mate on a nice Flicka sailing out of Port San Luis, CA. (near Moro Bay). Cheers -- Christopher Stevenson 626-394-0852 |

Are you in Long Beach? I have my Flicka in San Pedro CYM Cabrillo and I’m always looking for someone to sail with. I’m not confident enough to sail alone. Pam McComas

Hi Marc: Looks like there is one here in So. CA. that I was connected to via the Flicka.io groups. If this doesn't work out I'll get back to you... Thanks very much for reaching out... Would love to come for a sail in Bellingham area some day. Looking at this wonderful (and cool temps) area for a summer retreat from our desert home. -Christopher On Tue, Aug 30, 2022 at 11:47 AM marc <fuhrmeistermarc@...> wrote:

Hi Pam:
I'm in Pasadena. Not too far from Long Beach - CYM. I'm heading down to check out a Flicka in L.B. / Alamitos Bay on Friday - early a.m. Will give you a ring ... meet and see your Flicka? Go for a short sail? btw... I've met and sailed a Flicka up in Port San Luis/Moro Bay 2x in last 6 weeks. I've grew up sailing. Confident sailor. -- Christopher S. 626-394-0852 |

Hello Flicka Friends...
I believe I found what I need here in Long Bch., CA. Her name is MOONSHADOW. A good name for me as I was a teen when Cat Stevens hit the charts with this song of the same name and his folksy music). She has had only one owner and was the boat show model (nice teak touches). Thanks for all the responses. If all goes well I'll be joining the clan soon. btw... she is in need of a new set of sails... How much to expect to pay? I'm sure the price can vary greatly.. Sure would love to put a set of tanbarks on her - but suspect they are more $$. Cheers, Christopher -- Christopher S. |

I have an order in with Precision Sails. Tanbark main and working jib. They ask for a lot of measurements. I hope the sails turn out okay. Best of luck with your new boat. On Sun, Sep 4, 2022 at 8:39 PM Rod Green <treetopflier156@...> wrote:

You might want to contact Sailrite as in addition to them providing kits for sails, they also will sew them for you. I have a friend that recently purchased a set of tank bark sails from them and they were quite pleased. Our Flicka is on the Chesapeake Bay, near Deltaville which is a sailing 'hub' mid-bay. We recently had a jib made by Jerry Latell who has a shop there. He's just a great, friendly, and knowledgeable guy, AND his loft does excellent work. He's done other Flicka sails and genuinely knows the boats. Although associated with NZ Evolution sails, it's an actual loft which makes sails where we could go see the work and the folks doing it. Jerry is very much a sailor, racer, lover of traditional sailing craft (they build tall ship and other traditional sails), and contributes hugely to the sailing community. Oh, and the jib was very reasonably priced ;-) ...I have no affiliation with them, other than wanting to recommend them! On Sun, Sep 4, 2022 at 8:39 PM Rod Green <treetopflier156@...> wrote:

Hi, You have a lot of other options. I have a fully battened main and lazy bag mainsail cover system which works great. It saves a lot of time messing with the mainsail cover and adds to the safety of sail handling with no performance penalty. I also have a short reef point just 18 inches up to reduce sail minimally, but effectively on a breezy day reducing heel, which is efficient, without losing too much power. It's easy to set or release as we go. I ordered a 130 furling genoa with a foam luff which is about the right size for sailing around here with winds lets say up to 20 kts. Its reefed at maybe 12-15 as we go. I sometimes think I would have preferred a smaller jib which would not be reefed as early and thus sail to windward better, but in light winds glad for the 130. I would not go bigger.
My local boatyard s a Neil Pryde dealer so I bought them there to keep the busines local. The whole system, sails, lazy bag, lazy jacks, installed cost $3000 about 8 years ago and is holding up very well. Nick |

Thanks Nick:
Good intel. Good to know approx. cost too. That seems fair for all of those extras. I think the existing sails on this Flicka are good for a few more years? or so a Flicka expert neighbor says... Stitching is holding up. Having a 130 genoa seems a must... but here in So. CA. we have good winds a lot of the time. Where are you located? Does the Flicka group have a "members" list with locations, contact info? I need to check FB page I guess. Cheers, -- Christopher S. |

I would definitely sail a season with the old sails if they are decent before investing in new sails. Good older sails can also be restitched economically as well. I replace racing sails on my other boats regularly so I know good from bad. Focus on ease of use and durability. I recommend coastal cruising grade sails unless you're planning to cross the ocean. I have about 500 hrs sailing on these and pleased with their condition and expect another 500. My genoa is restitched as an economical precaution. We sail on the thin waters of the Great South Bay on the south shore of Long Island, NY. We get a good SW 15 kt sea breeze every day by 2pm so that's our target time for sailing home on a beat, often a few tacks if there's some West in it. We push our luck sailing in 4 ft, maybe less, of water regularly so the Flicka is perfect for us. Check out flicka20.com and the fleet has a friendly Facebook page, Flicka20 Sailboat. I have a page for my boat as well Tuesday's Child Flicka 20 Sailboat. Welcome aboard, Nick

This purchase has not been finalized. I’m found this boat via their s group and my “wanted” ad, however at present I can’t find a new home for her - so no Flicka for me yet. Thus far you and others have been super insightful and kind in offering helpful tips and details while navigating this big decision. The So.CA. marinas are full up w 2+ yr. waiting lists. No transfers allowed. 😩. Wish me luck.! This one is in pristine condition so I’d hate not to get ahold of her!
