Brass Ports Gaskets

Jeff Ritsema

I could use some help finding a supplier for the neoprene (rubber) gaskets on my port lights.  My boat is 1989 and all the ports are the original brass units.
Thanks, Jeff Ritsema

Ditto… crusty and leaking.

A quick reminder regarding the opening BRONZE ports on factory-built Flickas:

Pacific Seacraft supplied two (at least) different styles of opening bronze ports.  The earlier versions (roughly 1979-1988) were the more oval variants.  Sometime in either very late 1988 or early 1989, Pacific Seacraft switched to the rectangular model made in New Zealand.  The latter incorporated drains and mounting bosses for screens.  I believe the later rectangular ports were supplied through the end of Flicka production.  I also believe Pacific Seacraft switched again (post-Flicka production end) to yet another supplier(s).

It might be worthwhile to check with Steve Brodie to see whether he has (or knows source of) seals for the later style ports.  I believe he also did some refits for earlier boats, and therefore might have suggestions for the earlier oval style.

Just thought I would mention this, as I suspect the two different styles found on the Flicka might utilize entirely different rubber seals – best to verify your particular style and make sure any seals proposed by others are for that same style of port.

Best,
Scott

That's a very big problem Jeff. I have not found any. I have a 1979 and have tried hit and miss but can't find any yet. Even pacific seacraft couldn't help me.

I also have a 1979 with the same ports. It would be nice to find a source for a gasket that would work on these.
I am very interested if someone finds a source.

When I was asking about replacing these gaskets, Tom Davidson referred me to Flicka Friends Newsletter #72 December 2020.
It's a difficult job because the gasket is buried with the glass.

Checking the Flicka Friends- The last newsletter I find listed is Fall 2020, Newsletter 71.
Interestingly, as I tried to remove one of the gaskets, I was surprised to find a thin "elbow" of rubber that was, in fact buried between the brass and the glass.  Obviously, not your normal gasket format that I've ever dealt with.  Elected to push it back in for now.  Did Tom have any ideas on replacing?

Morris Parra

No, but somewhere on the internet I read a very detailed article about replacing these gaskets.  It involved removing the glass.  Too big a job for me, so I did not save the article.

Wow.  Thanks for your diligence on this Morris.  The ports in the pics are identical to mine.  Need to study this in depth and now have something to work with, thanks to you.  Have you actually done this protocol on your boat?
Jeff

Jeff Ritsema

Whoops, sorry, you already stated you have not.

Morris Parra

No, I have not, and I hope I never have to.  My boat, built in 1991, still has the original gaskets, but as long as they do not leak, I am not going to replace them.

Hoi Jeff,
I recently replaced all rubber gaskets on my 1982 Flicka with rubber supplied by Seacraft (info@...). The Dana 24 has the exact same type of ports and Seacraft supplies these parts.
Regards,
Rik

Rik,
I did wonder if the ports on your boat are similar to mine.  My boat was built in 1989 and has the New Zealand manufacturer's type of gasket, that being a square 1/2" rubber with a "wing" flap extension off one of the corners that buries itself between the glass and the brass frame. (quite unique and unusual).  Were your ports similar to this?  Thanks,
Jeff

Rik van der Vaart

Jeff, that does not sound like my ports. I can send a pic of mine if you want.

Thanks Ric but let’s wait until I have a chance to contact Seacraft and get some feedback from them.  Appreciate your feedback

HI Guys,

Cadenza #387 is a 1989 because the hull was popped in November or thereabouts.  She is a 1989 because that's what the law requires for numbering hulls.  I suspect that she is more 1990 than 1989. She was a 1990 hull color which was a very dark Navy.  And the ports had square corners.

I found another valuable memento a few days ago.  A key for the Yanmar 1GM-10.  It's in the garage with the partially delaminated tiller.  The Lewmar bronze winch handle and the name board are in the house.
