sea anchors

Anybody out there with Flicka sea anchor experience?

Recently I experimented with the two that I have: one with a ‘mouth’ of about 30”, the other about 60”. The results were not what I had hoped. In both cases, with the warps from the bow cleats, the boat lay beam on in both very light and moderate (10-15 knts) air, and this did not change when the warps were shifted to the bowsprit end. Then, I deployed a storm sail of about 10 sq ft on a backstay as a riding sail, and this only made a small difference, nowhere the stable bow-to-wind attitude I hoped for.

If I am missing something, I would sure like to know about it.

Thanks.

Gabriel  here is my experience while using a small cargo parachute in very bad weather. First learn how the boat will heave to, it should be about 30 to45 degrees off the waves using the main sail and the rudder. The amount of sail depends on the wind and I have a shock cord set up for the rudder. The boat should not be moving forward. This will cover the vast majority of your needs. Practice this in all kinds of weather, when you master it you learn to set a sea anchor to hold you in that position. Read Storm tactic by Pardy. The Flicka is a wonderful boat learn it and it will take care of you and give you much pleasure!!!!

PS  The Flicka is perfect for heaving to do not use the bowsprit or the backstay in heavy weather. (to weak)
