Hello Christine!
(for the love of god I cannot figure out how to reply on that website, and can barely post here either so not even sure if anyone will even see this – can one reply to these emails?!)
OMG Welcome!! Congrats!! Whooo Hooo!!!
I am on the west coast of BC, in Vancouver!! And then there is another lady (Mary I think) in Sooke with her boat too!! Eventually we will all sail together for sure!!! “Flicka Friends Fun Festival” and then get all the Port Townsend boats to join!
And: i too am a big coward now in solo sailing mine: it took three times (even left it overnight to calm down, and think and be sure the tiller port turns boat stbd…!) trying to move two fingers over at my marina…fin keel maneuverable she ain’t!! lol, and in 25kn winds, geez!!!
Love to see your boat (it is the “My Friend”, right?!) just let me know and we can meet up! We can sail around in Georgia Straight and get to learn her handling with two of us too, totally with you there!! 😉 (is your slip in the Rowing Club?!)
Thank you!
Sincerely; Shannon Rae 201-2065 West 4th Vancouver BC 604-805-8350

You will love your Flicka, Christine. With your experience, there is no reason to be insecure: Flicka are very forgiving. A couple of suggestions:

— Don’t think of her as a 20 footer, but rather a 3 tonner. Displacement is a better measure for any boat. She behaves more like something in the 25-30 foot range, and has and deserves the systems associated with that (rigging, electrical, plumbing, etc, etc.) — As with any unfamiliar boat, start easy so you can find defects in benign conditions— although some may only become evident when things are stiffer. This will give you and the boat a chance to get to know each other gently. As the relationship deepens, you can get more and more aggressive with confidence. — Have confidence in the boat. Properly configured, they can go anywhere. The limits will be you, not the boat. — Don’t pinch. As seaworthy as they are, Flicka are not weatherly. No heavy displacement boat with a full keel is, so you knew that going in. You will be better off falling off a bit and maintaining boat speed. — Have fun. Ghost around in light air sure, but you will be out there romping when other, even bigger ones are scurrying for cover. — Keep posting— let everybody know how you make out. Gabriel

There are a number of Flickas in Port Townsend and at least one on Orcas Island; all reasonably close to you. Maybe one of those owners will contact you from the list. Ginger

Hi Christine,
Welcome to the Flicka family!
I'm sure you will love your boat and you can be assured that she is a very well built little vessel. You can sail her about anywhere. You will find that the Flicka will do very well in 25 knots of wind and will take care of you in heavy weather.
Best of luck with your new boat.

From: Christine LL via groups.io <christinelockwoodlee@...> To: Flicka20@groups.io Sent: Thu, Oct 14, 2021 1:43 pm Subject: [Flicka20] #intro G'day, this is Christine from the new owner of Flicka #16. I was wondering if there are any Flicka owners that would be interested in offering their Flicka sailing knowledge and experience as I don't yet have the confidence to sail mine solo in anything above 10-15 knots. I have some cruising experience growing up on the East coast of Australia on cats and a 20ton cutter, and some solo sailing experience on a Cal 25 and Nash 26, but this little gem has me unsure of my abilities. Ideally, I would like to feel the confidence from a competent Flicka owner - day sails, passage? I am on the West Coast of Canada, but now that the border is opening, and I'm fully vaccinated I can go anywhere. Thank you in advance, Chris
