This adage is 100% true. Even with all lines run aft so that you can reef from cockpit, it can get quite sporting, specially if you are in confused seas or short-interval waves/chop.

We often reef (first) around 15kts if sustained (not 10kts with 15 gusts). I find it makes little difference in performance and make the sailing MUCH more enjoyable and relaxed.

I would say and this is my opinion… Anything over 20 knots and especially if gusting over that I would consider putting a reef in. Basically it comes down to if you THINK you will need a reef then jus
