Re: FTdx 101 noise levels

Hey Bill, super great to hear from you again it has been a long time.  Thanks much for the comments on the FTdx-101.  I bought it because I thought it would be the quietest rx out there.  Today I installed a ferrite choke balun right at the RX input and it think it quieted the noise by 6 to 7 dB.  Wow I heard that it might help and it did.

I would love to work you on voice one of these days, but I am going to be tied up trying to come up with a design that will work for a 50 foot MAST that my wife will accept and then installing it.  Probably a summer long project at the rate I work these days, hi.

Hi Mike,

Long time, no see.

The FTdx101 is the quietest receiver I’ve ever seen. The solar panels are your problem. K1KP had a QST article a few years back about how he quieted his. You might find that and fix yours.

For reference, on 20 meters here, the hex beam is at 54 ft, IPO on, Amp 1 isn’t used on 20, and I still hear stuff that sounds S9 but doesn’t even wiggle the S meter.

Hi Mike,

QST mag covered this subject in the past, if you are an ARRL member you should be able to trace it. There are different solar panels connection and some are more noisier than others. This will depend where are located the converters.
To perform some Internet search on your models, to get in contact with your supplier.

Good luck

Re: FTdx 101 noise levels

Thanks for the comments Dirk, I have a Solar Edge System with central grid-tie inverters with a “Power Optimizer” at every panel instead of an inverter.  It maximizes power with a switching/microcomputer system to modulate the current to keep the total string voltage between 350 and 400 VDC.  The optimizers are on whenever the sun is shining regardless if the inverters are turned off!!!!  That is what make the majority of the noise.  Yes, I agree that I need to add more ferrites on each lead.  The leads are twisted together with only one snap-on ferrite per optimizer.  There is a REAL solar farm six miles from here and I took a coaxial RDF there with a 20 meter receiver and could not hear anything out of that REALLY big system.  It had individual inverters at each panel.

Mike

The RFI generated by the solar farm is coming from the inverter(s).

if every panel has a so called micro inverter then you have to choke  every wire to it,   Those wires are the antenna for the noise source.
In the case of a central inverter(s) it is more reachable to put on choking beads or winding rings.     Some brands of inverters aRE RFI  free  such as SMA, some brands generate a lot of noise visual in the spectrum display  with a spike every  25 to 40 khz.

You can read a lot of this on contesting.com      RFI forum,   There is a search function   put in  'solar'  and you can read a many complains and solutions.

Your contact at Yaesu is Tim Factor, KT7F. Tim has helped me with several problems, with Yaesu equipment, over the years. He is always at the Yaesu booth, at major hamfests. Tim responds well to constructive criticism and questions. Tim, quite rightly, does not respond to rants. Tim is limited to what he can do by the engineers in Japan. At the Orlando Hamfest, in 2020, I took a list of five problems with the '101 and talked to Tim. Four of these problems were resolved in timely manner. The fifth problem was resolved with the last firmware update.
There has only been one perfect person to walk on planet earth. That person is not a design engineer with Yaesu.

Hi,

Possibly this message is redundant and sincerely at this time I do not know if any action is being taken.
Perhaps, it would be interesting to define some representative of the group at the country level or Yaesu corporation level to send our requests in an orderly manner, manage it and have an open line of communication with real interlocutors of the company. I believe that our voice is powerful and must be heard and taken into account.

It is very interesting to share our experiences, successes and frustrations with each other, but I think it is better to share it with the manufacturer in order to improve the product and make it even better.

Said that , is there anybody in the group that is already formally in communication with Yaesu?

Well I've got some strange stuff going on with my 101MP setup after HRD update.

I take a snapshot of ALL my settings so I can go back through methodically if it's not working. Usually it's something simple but so annoying when you can't find it. Anyway....

This time round I updated HRD and all looked fine except I had receive but no transmit audio. I finally noticed that In the Router / Ports settings at the top it now says 'no radio (mode selected manually). I use SSB for Data Comms. There are 4 buttons CW / VOI / FSK / DIG. I selected VOI for Voice... Hey Presto !! All working again.  This would usually show the radio eg. FT991A etc.

Ahhhh the joys and mysteries of HRD   :-)

Hello and thank you for your answers

Yes I am using the latest version of HRD
I start HRD first then JTDX
I have tried USB and still have the same problem
I do the configuration as on the HRD video
I think the problem comes from the split I continue my tests
I'll let you know the results

Download the latest version of HAMRADIODELUX lt now supports the FTDX101d/mp

Open on PC HRD FIRST then open WSJT in that order

WSJT will ask for the radio SELECT HRD from the drop down menu.

I use the virtual comport NOT the RS232 comport

Works perfect for me.

Hello everyone

How do you configure your Hrd Rig control?

I have to put the FT 991A as radio for the HRD/JTDX/JTAlert suite to work properly

when i put FTDX101D the suite doesn't work correctly example: qrg 18.100 in rx and when i switch to transmit qrg TX 18.100.500 normal split mode in JTDX when i switch back to receive it doesn't come back to 18.100.000 but to 18.100.500

HRD is updated to V6.7.0.357

Are you using Data or SSB mode? That will make a difference. Try SSB with processor off.

Re: Question about the SCU-Lan10 Interface

Inigo EB2AQH

Dear Michael,
I have installed the SCU-lan10 in my FTdx101MP since last October and I am very satisfied with it.
The connection with the radio is made through an Ethernet cable from my router and remotely I use any laptop that runs windows through a Wi-Fi internet connection or 4G network.
Latency in any case is not a problem and the audio quality in both RX and TX is very good. There are many colleagues who when I tell them that I operating remotely they don't realise the difference.
In my case it is the best way to be able to do radio when I am not at home, or when I am sitting on the sofa or in bed, and amortise the cost of such expensive equipment (smile ...)
There are some functions in the program that do not work 100%, such as the possibility of adjusting the sensitivity level of the waterfall, but I suppose they will improve over time.
It would also be desirable to develop software app to be able to use it with android or IOs, which is not possible today.
Another big limitation is that SCU-lan10 must be connected to USB socket at the back of the radio, so you will loose the possibility to use this connectivity with other application or external devices.
The only way to way to do it is via RS232 socket for CAT and aux line audio in/out connection.
This is my case, USB for SCU-lan10 and RS232 and Line aux in/out for FT8, Ham Radio Deluxe, etc.
I hope it will help you.

Re: Question about the SCU-Lan10 Interface

KD2WBI - Tom

Multiple questions there:
-> What can be controlled: short answer without an inventory is a subset of what you can control from the radio itself - basically useful for phone only and listening

-> Control via the internet: the unit SCU-10 unit has an ethernet port for connection to your home network and includes instructions on how to pop a hole in your firewall to allow access from outside your immediate network (from the internet) Those instructions aren't good and some folks have had issues. I use a VPN and connect to my internal network and the radio remotely in that manner. Not a fan of holes in firewalls.

-> In terms of shortcomings: limited functionality as noted above, no tablet or mobile interfaces, requires a decent computer to function properly. I have a small surface tablet that doesn't use one of the full on intel processors and it does lag. Full blown laptop or desktop not an issue.

Bottom line - nice for when I want to sit outside and listen but absolutely does not replace sitting in front of the radio. With out additional functionality like ability to control all menus and CW/digital modes - its still on the toy side of the spectrum.
